#1 prospect for 2022 decommits from Texas (bad news)
Southlake (TX) Carroll quarterback Quinn Ewers, a 5-star and the #1 prospect in 2022, decommitted from Texas yesterday. Probably because Texas kinda sucks.
This is bad, because six crystal ball picks came in last night for Ewers to Ohio State. And, unfortunately, Ohio State kinda doesn't suck.

His last name is Ewers. Does he have sheep?

This is shear hilarity.

But woolly expected.

Come on ladies and gents, we’re better than this. If the pun doesn’t work, you don’t have to try and ram it into a joke.
Edit: My baaaaaad. In my haste to shepherd my pun into the mix, I missed Xtra's initial ram reference.

I have enjoyed Texas' time in the wilderness but it does seem clear that OSU has been benefitted from their downturn; a lot of high ranking Texas guys leaving the state to play at OSU when that did not seem like a thing even a few years ago.

Urban’s next stop. He would’ve been USC’s coach if not for the Pres blocking his hire on ethical grounds.
October 29th, 2020 at 11:56 AM ^
This is true. Former business partner is seriously connected to USC and told me this repeatedly at the time. It was a done deal.
October 29th, 2020 at 1:43 PM ^
I still think he ends up at USC - eventually. He's opened up a few businesses in the Columbus area and actually seems to like what he's doing (Fox Sports commentator). Time will tell.

We need a win or two to stop this snowballing effect. No better time to do it than with Milton at QB. They're battling Alabama for the 2021 recruiting crown - both those classes could break the all-time 247 Composite of 324.
And their 2022 class could be better. No better way to stop that than for Milton & Co. to take them down this year and get to the playoffs. I like our chances and nothing will boost our recruiting like playoff appearances (and NFL draft picks)

OSU beating UM has little to do with it. For sure that OSU has been one of the best teams for the past 20 years is a plus and they have had good, consistant coaching for those 20 years sets a base. But the real issue is that OSU treats their football players like professional athletes. School is just a side distraction to be minimally tolerated for anyone on their team who wants to treat it that way. They have been supplying benefits under the table for years. And it turns out that was the right call. People don't really care about that stuff as much as they may talk about it as long as you win. So what UM really needs to do is modernize their recruiting, forget the school aspect for anyone player who doesn't care about school, and start paying players. That is when UM will start to compete in the rivarly. UM is not in a fertile enough recruiting ground to take school and no benefits seriously and still real in enough top talent year after year to compete with OSU.
October 29th, 2020 at 10:08 AM ^
So how come we used to beat them regularly even though all their players were getting treated like ''professional athletes''?
October 29th, 2020 at 10:19 AM ^
The 90s were a primitive era when it came to unofficial recruiting networks and under-the-table payments. Participating in that kind of stuff is absolutely essential now if you want to be a contender for 70%-80% of the top prospects. Back then, you only needed to do that for 10-20% of the top prospects.
October 29th, 2020 at 11:49 AM ^
Forget the 90s, we were on even recruiting footing with them even in the 2000s and we still lost every year.
It's literally all about winning.

I'm sure all the General Studies majors at Michigan totally agree with you. 4 and 5 star athletes with NFL aspirations are very concerned with making sure football doesn't interfere with their Astrology 101 class.
October 29th, 2020 at 10:20 AM ^
LOL!!! Typical loser mentality. We cant compete so of course the other team is cheating. Ill say it again. Success breeds success. This is also a cyclical sport where you have to ride the momentum. We have been fortunate enough to hire good coaches and as long as they remain we will be on top of the hill. At this point I think Harbaugh is a second tier coach and you can have him as long as you like. The college football land scape has changed in the last 20 years. No longer is the Midwest rust belt pumping out all the talent. You have to go south and build pipelines which is what we have done in Texas and Georgia and Florida.
October 29th, 2020 at 10:52 AM ^
If you don't believe osu isn't paying players by all means explain Clarett, Pryor, and top classes when literally every osu fan i know has called usc, meyer at UF, bama, lsu and Georgia all cheaters for paying players. Its stupid Michigan doesn't do it and its not a loser mentality when its true. The reason I don't give a shit about Michigan sports or major college sports is because if you are not paying olinemen $160k in stolen money from a hospital then u aren't winning. That's a fact.
October 29th, 2020 at 3:45 PM ^
Its stupid Michigan doesn't do it
Yup, Gary definitely turned down a reported 300k from Clemson to sign with y'all for nothing because he believes in the pureness of amateur sports just like your school does.
October 29th, 2020 at 10:23 AM ^
I kind of agree. If I’m a 5 star I’m going to college to get a job in the NFL, just like a computer science student is looking to get a job in Big Tech. At Michigan, the engineering students don’t have to take foreign language classes and take less humanities classes. So why not make their college experience focused on making the NFL instead of focusing on LSA classes and “playing school”
October 29th, 2020 at 11:33 AM ^
An economics class might come in handy for them.
October 29th, 2020 at 10:10 AM ^
Michigan isn't turning the tide unless they win a national championship. Kids want to win, its really that simple
October 29th, 2020 at 1:55 PM ^
Winning and getting to the NFL. I can't remember where I saw it, but Bama and OSU were the two schools that had 50 or more players on 2020 NFL rosters. And you can be sure they both use it as a major recruiting tool when talking to 4 and 5 star recruits
