Your vote for worst ref calls so far this year
The post about Detroit flags got me thinking. What’s your vote for worst / blown calls we’ve seen so far this year? I’m mostly thinking about calls that went against MI of course.
The one that comes to mind is the Ronnie Bell catch vs Wisconsin. Rules experts on TV went on to say that they would have overturned it INTO a catch. Last year the holding penalty on Tru Wilson sticks out (the one where he was just plain tackled). Can’t remember who we were playing.
Not meaning to whine; let’s laugh at these, and cathartically move on from em. Throw in some contenders while we wait for another 45min or so.

Ronnie Bell’s catch call was absolutely absurd. I was at Camp Randall for that game and even the Wisconsin fans nearby were surprised at the ruling.

Last week, Iowa-Penn St., late touchdown overturned by O'neil's squad. Fucking horrid.

I thought the holding call was against Higdon in last year's Northwestern game (here). That's probably the worst (and weirdest) call I've seen in several years.
I'm personally glad they're not playing Northwestern this year; with an occasional exception like the 2015 game most of those games have been tighter than I would like for the last decade or so.

Oh right, thanks. Was a bit fuzzy on the details.

This is my answer as well. I kept replaying it to try and find someone that was holding, thinking that the ref got the number wrong. There was literally no holding by anyone on the offense. And the player called for holding was himself tackled by a defender. Absolutely absurd call.

Probably 3-4 in every Lions game each year. The Bell catch stands out for Michigan this year. MSU got screwed some against OSU but can’t remember specifics

New entry in this category is a blown no-call against Oregon
October 19th, 2019 at 6:59 PM ^
Just saw that live and thought the same thing, haha.

Sticking with the Pac 12, there was a targeting call against a player earlier this year. The league admitted it was wrong but still made the player sit for the first half of the next game.

I think that was against NW last year.
Funny thing about that..... besides the fact that the announcer was howling about how bad that call was...…and pretty much laughing at it. It forced a punt on the next play. M got flagged on that punt for - illegal shift or formation. I believe it was Ambry. He went in motion - like two yards - snap - then ran upfield. Upon a very quick replay they (announcers) said - uh yeah he did that (it wasn't a legit penalty). Then they took a penalty and punted again. AND DID THE EXACT SAME FUCKING THING. Watch it. It's comical. They changed nothing. And no flag. Absolute silly 3 play sequence from an officiating standpoint.
They lost 20 yards on absolutely nothing and should've had 1st n 10. It was a 35 yard FP change.

Ronnie Bell one pretty bad.
Think you’re referring to Higdon in last year’s NW game, the “penalty from Mars.”

Didn't cause a loss, but the fumble blown dead instead of a TD against Army was pretty atrocious.
Today, South Carolina got 100% screwed multiple times on no calls and wrong calls. It definitely cost them the win.

Good vote. Crucial call and one that probably changed that game quite a bit of course.

Any John O'Neil game

Speaking of terrible officials, I wonder how many are on the take, at least on occasion.
Sports betting is a multibillion dollar industry.

Quiet down you, nobody wants to make more money, has no moral compass and has the ability to get paid without much of a paper trail (BTC).

Honestly wondering how he still has a job? Do the have a union and he can't be fired? What is it?
October 19th, 2019 at 7:04 PM ^
If we’re bringing in other teams/games into the equation, I bet MSU would vote for the no-call on the leaping on the last second field goal that they missed, that would have won them the game vs Arizona St.
Hard not to put equal blame on the 12 men on the field, on the play before, haha.
October 19th, 2019 at 7:54 PM ^
How would that have won them the game? That kick was just to force OT

The Detroit abomination
Many calls against Michigan
(Who's a homer?)
October 19th, 2019 at 7:11 PM ^
If we are including previous seasons, too many to choose from.
The Higdon holding call when the LB literally tackled him was broadcast almost everywhere.
October 19th, 2019 at 8:59 PM ^
Anyone remember the ND game when Carlyle Holiday ran into the end zone, left the ball at the 1 yard line, and it was magically still a TD?
October 19th, 2019 at 7:11 PM ^
Barrett was short
Perry was interfered with on third down
not this year but I’m still fucking pissed
October 19th, 2019 at 7:19 PM ^
I will never not be pissed about that game. It will come up in my deathbed confession 40 years from now.

Lots of mad users in that thread. He made it, it doesn't matter that the ref was from Columbus, too bad so sad.

Except he didn’t make it.

I don't know about call, but the worst hit I've seen is what Mizzou did to the Vandy QB today.
Just heinous.
October 19th, 2019 at 7:28 PM ^
If you want to see one of the worst plays ever, check out the Arkansas fake punt today.
October 19th, 2019 at 7:16 PM ^
It wasn’t a “call”, per se, but the Wisconsin fans at my game-watch bar grousing about their player’s ejection for nearly killing McCaffrey was this close to murdering someone I’ve been in weeks.
October 19th, 2019 at 7:19 PM ^
Hopefully the Bell catch is the worst thing we see all year. You better not have jinxed us, OP.
October 19th, 2019 at 7:28 PM ^
The pass interference against Kansas when the play would have essentially the ended the game against the Vince Young-led Texas team. It was clearly a bullshit call by the Big 12 to ensure Texas made it to the championship game.
October 19th, 2019 at 7:35 PM ^
2016 OSU - Michigan ... no pi on the db who grabbed Perry. I know it’s not this year, but there is a three year statute of limitations on assault.
October 19th, 2019 at 8:02 PM ^
I vote this the worst thread of the year
When you say you are not whining, you are whining

The Big 10 refs tonight

No PI on John Reid against Tarik just awhile ago.

You just had to ask, didn't you?
