OSU TE Marcus Baugh Suspended
It's officially the offseason. The top story on the CBS Eye on College Football blog is about Marcus Baugh getting an MIP, which is apparently his second.
I posted just to put this gem in from an old Simpsons:
Ned Flanders: Pardon me, neighbourinos. Some of our boys are lost in your town. You wouldn't have happened to see them, by any chance?
Shelbyvillian #1: Sounds like Springfield's got a discipline problem.
Shelbyvillian #2: Maybe that's why we beat them at football nearly half the time.

...no big deal. College kids being college kids.
Second offense...hmmm, I'm sensing a trend.

...and he'd make Michigan's depth chart as a WR.

Ooooooooooooookaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay

A college kid who plays for a major university, one that has not had the cleanest of records with regards to discipline over the last few years and has already had one incident on his record. If it was me or if I was his coach, I'd be thinking I better not let this happen again. Especially in this day and age of news reporting and social media. For a football player at osu, yes...this is a disturbing trend. I'd say the same if it were someone from UM or any other school.

This reminds me of the story about Woody Hayes and one of his players (Schlicter I think). The player had a serious drinking problem so Woody took him to a brewery one evening and said: "Look at this son, do you think you can possibly drink all this beer?" The reply was "No coach, but I sure got 'em working overtime."
January 22nd, 2014 at 8:54 PM ^
Fuck Woody Hayes.

Come on, this is an MIP (Minor in Possession), I bet 90% of UM students could get caught with alcohol every week and get MIPs.... MIP is a waste of time, he should just be more aware of those cops

I drank before turning 21. I never got caught or a ticket. Was his offense major? No. In fact, IMO it's much less serious than DUIs. However, he did break the law and get caught. A suspension is warranted, but not a huge long one. Don't want to get suspended? Don't get an MIP. Don't want an MIP? either dont drink - or dont get caught.

My roommate got an MIP literally 3 nights before he turned 21. He wasn't out being a hooligan, it was just bad luck that he decided to walk home on the path that he did.

that's all I was trying to say. Plus, I'm thinking the girls in your grade in high school weren't responsible to a team or a program that is as high profile as osu. My point being that he needs to go above and beyond to stay out of trouble, and as I mentioned above...I'm sensing a trend. And not that it isn't stupid to be in trouble for something we've all done before, but I believe his situation to be different from ours.

Heck, me and a dozen of my HS JV team only got 1 week suspensions for the same thing. (The 70's, legal age 18)

Hopefully it will be like Fitz's OVI or even Clark's suspension eh?
January 22nd, 2014 at 12:44 PM ^
has a different plan for discipline. Six strikes and you're out. At this point, Baugh is still in great position to swing away.
January 22nd, 2014 at 12:52 PM ^
Yes, it's not like suspended marcus hall for an entire game.
January 22nd, 2014 at 12:35 PM ^
Wasn't driving this car, was he?
January 22nd, 2014 at 12:36 PM ^
that car is more than a year old. He wouldn't be caught dead in that POS.
January 22nd, 2014 at 12:43 PM ^
No, that would only get you suspended for 1 meaningless game like Fitz
January 22nd, 2014 at 2:58 PM ^
I'll just leave this here instead.
January 22nd, 2014 at 1:38 PM ^
Then I agree
January 22nd, 2014 at 2:11 PM ^
Yeah, that's the one. Could have had 1000 Fitz's and Clark's and still the same outcome.
January 22nd, 2014 at 12:36 PM ^
Not in the circle of trust

A college kid? Drinking underage? CATAPULT HIM.

...if he loses his scholarship over this. That said, I don't mean to minimize the harm of drinking beer when you're 19 or 20 or whatever he is. It's very important to wait until you're 21, when you can then legally drink yourself into oblivion.
January 22nd, 2014 at 12:45 PM ^
''Remember that the legal drinking age is 21''
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Urban Meyer (shaking finger): "Listen, if you don't straighten up you'll drink yourself right off the team. Now go get in there."

2013 - vs. Buffalo (check)
2014 - at Navy (check)
Nothing to see here.

It's cold outside and I have whiskey in the cabinet .....
January 22nd, 2014 at 1:01 PM ^
I stopped being judgemental on this when I realized that we're no better. No point in pointing fingers now that will just be pointing right back at us. Personally I am of the opinion if you do this, you're off the team. Hoke won't do that, so no point in expecting it of other schools. Though few are as bold as MSU and pick their playeres up from the slammer so they can make a noon game.
January 22nd, 2014 at 2:49 PM ^
I am with you and I really do hope more coaches step up and be consistent and tough with their punishment. If you don't learn consequences in those developmental years then it probably won't get any easier in your 20s.
January 22nd, 2014 at 3:09 PM ^
Getting kicked off the team (and possibly having to leave school due to a loss of scholarship money) is a bit extreme, no? It's hard to imagine anyone suffering such dire consequences for what amounts to a citation.
January 22nd, 2014 at 4:56 PM ^
That's called life and responsibility. If they don't learn it in college or (apparently) as a child, they just end up being problems later in life. Not saying it's a 1 to 1 comparison or proven methodology, but honestly, these kids are the face of these organizations and they should be held to a higher standard.

Kicking someone off the team over an MIP is idiotic. Underage drinking is, honestly, not that big a deal, and MIP's are usually just bad luck (walking home the wrong way, going to the wrong party that ends up being busted, etc). Unless you can say with certainty that that everyone that drinks in college is a bad person, you can't fault him for this.

After losing this senior class and juniors Bradley Roby and Ryan Shazier, the Buckeyes have 61 scholarship players accounted for. That means 21 spots are currently open. Ohio State has 22 oral commitments for the Class of 2014 with National Signing Day looming on Feb. 5. - from the Plain-Dealer story
It would be a shame if Baugh's behavior made him "the odd man out" here, but the potential is there that he could be on the short end of scholarship math if Meyer saw fit right now.
