Danny Sheridan (USA Today) is a Moran
Usually, I do not post about what some random radio personality spews over the air, but this display of stupidity and ignorance so breathtaking, I must share it here.
Danny Sheridan was on Paul Finebaum show on ESPN Radio to talk about the coaching changes at Alabama.
Here is the Danny Sheridan's theory on why Saban made the move to Kiffin from Nussmeier; it is because Alabama missed out on Jameis Winston and Nussmeier doesn't know anything about dual threat quarterbacks.
The stupidity does not stop there. Sheridan also says that hiring Kiffin makes sense because Kiffin knows how to recruit and coach dual threat quarterbacks.
You can hear it for yourself here, it is within the first 2 minutes.

First, I think Alabama has done quite well with quarterbacks under Nussmeier. McCarron is going to be drafted in the first round and has been as good a quarterback as any at Alabama in history, with TWO (!!!) National Championships under his belt.
Second, obviously Sheridan has no clue that Nussmeier coached two superior dual threat quarterbacks in Jake Locker and Keith Price at Washington. One is already in NFL (and very successful) and the other is NFL bound.
Third, what duel threat quarterback did Lane Kiffin recruit and coach at USC??? Here are the last 5 starting quarterbacks - Cody Kessler, Matt Barkley, Mark Sanchez, John David Booty, Matt Leinhart. In what universe would somebody look at the list and say the coach for those QB's know dual threat QB's???
I do not understand how someone so transparently dumb has a position with one of the largest newspaper in the country. It just boggles the mind.
I've got a feeling Sheridan will be reacquainted with Nussmeier's acumen with dual threat quarterbacks next year plenty.

Let alone likely in the first 3 rounds. He's just not a very good quaterback, and him declining the senior bowl invite was pretty stupid. This makes what Nussmeier accomplished even better.

an absolutely mediocre QB into a high-functioning winner a bad thing?

highest probably of being successfu in the NFL. I believe Lou Holtz stated he was the best QB in college and would succeed in the NFL.
An added benefit to the team that drafts him is the possibility his girlfriend will accompany him.:)

Why would you use a Lou Holtz quote to defend your position?

Danny "I'm taking FSU and laying the points in a blowout win over Auburn" Sheridan.
The "best sports analysis and handicapper in college football today".
Might get my vote for "most insignificant person on twitter with over 1M followers".

Jameis Winston committed to FSU in August of 2011. Doug Nussmeier was not at Alabama.

That Jameis' first choice was Texas...who never even wanted him (as QB, at least).

Duel threat? Only if you're trying to kill someone by sitting on them.
January 14th, 2014 at 5:42 PM ^
but then I listened and ho-ly cow. This was it for me:
Look at all the quarterbacks out there...you say they all have one thing in common: they're not going to Alabama
Goodness has a single football quote ever been so dumb? Did it ever occur to him that Alabama wasn't recruiting a dual threat QB? They seemed to be able to win a few national titles without them.
AJ McCarron (2009) **** #128 to Rivals
David Cornwell (2014) **** #94 to Rivals
Ricky Town (2015) ***** #9 to Rivals
I can see this guy did vast fact checking before just brain dumping on Finebaum's show

Recruited by the 'Nuss. Wanted to go to NussTown but instead headed to Kiffinville.

They signed Cooper Bateman last year, the 11th ranked pro style QB.
This is the same argument Mack Brown always had to deal with whenever a quarterback from Texas went somewhere else and played well.

Nuss was hired January 18, 2012 and Winston committed to FSU Feb 3, 2012. Is he blaming Nuss for not getting Winston? Is Winston even a dual threat QB? He had like 250 yards rushing all season. Oh, and Bama hasn't offered one dual threat QB for 2015 according to Rivals so I doubt they are moving in that direction.

They can say whatever the fuck they want to say. In the end we'll all enjoy watching the result of "luring" Kiffin to Tuscaloosa.
Haters gonna hate... I'm still ecstatic about this hire.

2) I don't think Price is going to get drafted. May prove even more the impact Nuss had but Price is on the downfall. This week at Shrine will be a better indicator but it's not off to a good start.
January 14th, 2014 at 6:16 PM ^
I don't claim to know much about Winston's recruitment, but Alabama was also coming off of a National Championship with a Sophmore QB in McCarron. Maybe he didn't see an opportunity for early playing time at Alabama.
College football wouldn't even know the name Jameis Winston if he went to Bama, besides as McCarron's back-up.
January 14th, 2014 at 6:25 PM ^
I like the use of Jameis Winston to assert Lane Kiffin's dominance over Doug Nussmeier. I bet nobody here would've found this gold mine of relevance, maybe we should give Danny some more credit
January 14th, 2014 at 6:49 PM ^
is to win. I am sure Doug has heard these and will be motivated to show them what he can do on his own.

The examples presented by Sheridan doesn't really make the case that Lane Kifflin will be someone who draws dual threat QBs to Alabama - someone with Calvin Magee's background as an OC would be a far credible argument with Pat White and Denard Robinson as examples. So why does he do it?
But it would be hard to discount that there may be a tiny kernel of truth inside these layers of confusion. Consider that Saban really does want to shake up his offense but perhaps more importantly he wants to change the perception of the offense, so all of this blather may reflect the info he and his PR people are disseminating which is why columnists like Sheridan pick up on it and run with it. They are getting it directly from the source which is why they run with it.
Saban is looking to put the notion out there that there is a place for a dual threat QB at Alabama and may be adaptable. So if the next Cam Newton comes along he doesn't want his recruiting rivals to be able to put out the notion that Alabama won't be interested because they only want drop back passers. It has yet to be born out by solid evidence (as show in the OP) but it is the perception of change in the offense and the perception of being receptive to a dual threat QB which is being pushed and so far, he is getting that press.
January 14th, 2014 at 7:22 PM ^
Jameis Winston is not a duel threat QB just because hes black.

The complete lack of standards in sports journalism is so frustrating. It's the only profession I can think of where you can be completely incompetent and still retain a high-level job and spout off ridiculous nonsense on a weekly basis.

decision, and not qb play, and you rely on a kicker who can't kick long field goals, I guess blaming your failure to win, ought to be based on playcalling and the talent that repeatedly led you to the big game. It couldn't be defensive failures that lost the bowl game or forced shootouts with Texas A&M.
January 14th, 2014 at 8:14 PM ^
Just more nitwittery from sports know-nothings. 9 times out of 10 they just throw stuff out there for the sake of having something to say. The other time they just spout off inflammatory crap to get attention.
I don't listen much to any of them anymore, except maybe Sam Webb & Company on WTKA.
