MBB #2 in Coaches Poll/#1 in AP Poll
#2 in the updated coaches poll, only 3 points behind Kansas. Understandable considering we were #3 in last week's coaches poll. #1 in the AP poll with a solid lead over Kansas.

A win at IU will flip that discrepancy!

How is Minnesota still ranked? They've now lost 4 straight

Michigan, IU, and Wisconsin. All are quality teams.

This has already been posted, which is clearly labeled "open thread-polls with Michigan Hoops #1."

I only expected us to be #1 in the AP poll anyways. A win at Indiana would definitely flip at least a handful of voters to put us at #1.

Curious to me that State is ranked higher than Ohio, and in the Top 10 for that matter
January 28th, 2013 at 1:11 PM ^
Voters still give Izzo bonus points for winning a title over a decade ago and finishing fourth a handful of times since. His team is legitimately good (again) but them being top 10 has more to do with those previous accomplishments of his than it does this years team.

Kansas is only 3 points ahead of us though, so we're right up with them. I bet if whoever voted Florida 1 voted us 1, we'd be in first place

I think it's total b.s. that they let Phil Fulmer vote on this!

So much laughter, and residual pain, every time.

And then promptly retire?
This is okay and not unexpected. KU has a good resume as well. Michigan will be #1 in the AP.
Just keep winning.

Ugh. They're just dumb farmers in straw hats, living in a flyover state, and praying to jesus to lower gas prices. Because of those reasons I think it's clear that Michigan should be #1.
January 28th, 2013 at 1:04 PM ^
I never saw anyone in a straw hat.
January 28th, 2013 at 1:19 PM ^
And we have some of the lowest gas prices in the whole country, thank you.

And you better get that gear ready... the AP poll should be out shortly.

Makes sense. I'm actually in Kansas City, and half this town goes for KU...

I guess we failed the one test that Kansas happened to pass.

Illinois has got to be kicking itself for letting Bill Self walk away. He's shown at both Illinois and Kansas that he is an elite coach. Meanwhile, after his own recruits graduated, the Illini tanked.
January 28th, 2013 at 1:15 PM ^
I'm not sure why the separation occured but unless Illinois was going to open the bank vaults, there's probably no way they could have kept Self. Kansas vs Illinois is a no-brainer when it comes to basketball.
January 28th, 2013 at 2:25 PM ^
That may be, but Illinois thinks of itself as a basketball school, and has a good recruiting base in the Chicago area. Self had them at the top of the league standings. They should have done whatever it took to keep him happy.

Kind of hard to argue with Kansas being number 1 right now.

Last week we were 20 points behind them (732 to 712). Beat Indiana and it's a done deal.

Not surprising because our loss is more recent than theirs (nation-leading 17 game win streak). Dispose of Northwestern and nab a huge win on the road at #3 Indiana and we're solid.
Of course, that win at Indiana won't be easy.

Assuming they calculate the points using the same method that football polls use, then if you subtract out the points that were accumulated through first place votes (25 points per 1st place vote, in other words), then we come out ahead of Kansas by 47 points. If I had to guess, then on a fair number of the ballots where were were not first, we spent rather a lot of time in 2nd and 3rd place. That theory for why we come up three points behind Kansas seems to make sense numerically, but it doesn't make me feel any better about it.
Now, the AP Poll, on the other hand, 51 first place votes and 14 second place votes. I like this much better.
January 28th, 2013 at 1:40 PM ^
Not that it matters, but coaches polls drive me crazy. If there is ever anyone without the time to watch other games with great regularity, other than their next opponent, it is coaches from big name programs.
Regardless, it is nice to be number 1 in the AP poll.

Feels so good to see that #1 by Michigan's name in the matchup column.

Putting this here as well in the hopes that someone skilled in the art of video editing can make a new remixed version.
The best part about this YouTube clip is it was put up by some Sparty trying to troll Michigan. For me, it' just makes this sweeter, and a reminder of how far Michigan basketball has come. Can someone remix this with highlights from this year?
