Fucking brilliant, Lane. Between Lanie and Big Al I have had the misfortune to watch some of the worst playcalling ever.

they could be playing Ohio.
November 24th, 2012 at 11:34 PM ^
How would that be worse? At least one would have to lose.

One would have to WIN, too.

November 24th, 2012 at 11:35 PM ^
I'm guessing you're too young to have ever encountered Notre Dame fans when their team is really good....
November 25th, 2012 at 12:25 AM ^
I'm guessing you are wrong.
November 25th, 2012 at 3:10 AM ^
I'm with you; no Michigan fan should prefer Florida over ND in a championship game. Ever since Florida jumped UM in the polls to #2 at the end of the year a few years ago based on PR rather than resume, they've deserved no love from UM. And usually, UM gets way more credit for beating ND than it should; UM gets to claim a win over ND - which always sounds good, even when ND isn't. So maybe 20 or 30 years ago, it made sense to hate ND, but not any more. Just like 50 years ago maybe people hated Army and 90 years ago they hated Chicago or whatever. I can't forgive Florida (and Urban) for jumping UM any more than I can forgive Nebraska for their gift national championship in 1997. Maybe in 30 years I'll sound like all these people who hate ND; people will be asking, Why again do you hate Nebraska so much? But ND in 2012? Preferable to any SEC team, especially if you're living outside of southern Michigan.
November 25th, 2012 at 9:32 AM ^
I would totally agree with you, except... A lot of the edge of the injustice was taken off when both UM and OSU were exposed by subsequently getting pantsed by USC and Florida. So even though with the data available at the time, UM should have been in the MNC game, it's much harder to make that argument after the fact.
Doesn't change the fact that Urban was (and still is) a complete douche for his lobbying efforts though.
November 26th, 2012 at 12:34 AM ^
I watched every UM game and about five of Florida's games that year. UM was - as objective as I can be - by far the better team. It didn't just look better because it was playing weaker opponents, which is what some said. I remember many instances when Florida would do things a good team just doesn't do (stupid penalties, dropped punts, things like that), and I remember thinking that before they were ever in the discussion for #2. They just looked inept more than the #2 team in the country should and got lucky enough to win, whereas UM that year generally dominated its opponents. But you're right - that doesn't change OSU's complete failure in the MNC. Maybe OSU wins 7 of 10 against Florida. Maybe not. But they blew it that night.
Just to give you a double-except: all the arguments Urban and the SEC used to justify Florida's jumping to #2 were no longer valid when it was LSU v. Alabama recently (didn't even win conference, already saw them play each other, had its chance, etc.) So would LSU have gotten blown out by someone other than Alabama? Possibly. If we were going to find out that OSU would lie down for Florida, we should have also been able to find out that LSU would have lain down for "#2 team in the country not from the SEC".
That hypocrisy - which kept a deserving UM team out of a second shot at OSU on a neutral field - irritates me much more than some faded glory of ND. I'd rather have some team from the USSR in the MNC, if it means keeping Florida, another SEC team, or Urban/OSU out.

This has been one of the worst college football seasons I can remember. I'm starting to think God is a ND fan. They seem to always get every team's worst performance.

I feel like I am in hell! The Domers and Ohio both undefeated and Michigan had the chance to stop both. Unbelievable. This season sucks!
November 24th, 2012 at 11:32 PM ^
Ohio is undefeated and unranked.
I for one gave a small thanks on Thursday to Chris Cicero and Jim Tressell for stupidly cracking OSU's invisibility cloak and getting them a bowl ban. I probably should have thanked Gene Smith, too, but I still have some standards.
November 25th, 2012 at 12:54 AM ^
They're not unranked in the AP poll. They could, in theory, win a share of the national title.

It's impossible for OSU and ND to both get NC's. If ND wins they will be undefeated and AP will not give anyone a NC over them. The only way OSU wins the AP is if they are the only undefeated team left, which means ND lost and doesn't win one.
November 24th, 2012 at 11:28 PM ^
better next year. They can't tackle and they have no discipline. For all that talent, they aren't very good. He got outcoached completely, especially on that goal line stand. They gave that game away.

Today sucks. Notre Dame sucks. Now I get to hear ESPN sucking their dick all day every day until they get curb-stomped in the NCG.
November 24th, 2012 at 11:28 PM ^
Silver lining: they were a crappy five-loss team last year. If they could make this kind of a leap forward, why can't we? They've won with defense, and yet Bob Diaco wasn't exactly known as a stud DC before this season.
November 24th, 2012 at 11:32 PM ^
This year? They don't turn the ball over a ton and they're undefeated..
November 25th, 2012 at 12:45 AM ^
They won because God is on their side. We don't really have that edge...
November 24th, 2012 at 11:28 PM ^
...and USC ended it in an almost poetic fashion with a call for "roughing the kicker", a penalty which is declined, giving USC 19 seconds to do...something. They do "something" too - a sack and fumble, recovered by USC. Notre Dame wins.
As a natural consequence, another bottle of wine is open...and not in celebration.
November 24th, 2012 at 11:28 PM ^
And Brian Kelly only had to ignore two kids dying to do it!
November 24th, 2012 at 11:28 PM ^
What is worse if you are an SC fan. Remember what the expectations of USC were this year and where they are now with the losses and injuries.
USC has some real explaining to do with all the talent they had that was totally squandered this year.

Worst display of coaching I have seen in my entire life between GERG, Borges, and Kiffin this weekend. Abysmal. Naturally I was rooting for all three. I fucking hate college football. How do these guys stay employed while doing the same thing over and over that doesn't work? Not even the weatherman can get away with that.
I'm not even impressed with their goalline stand. USC ran into a stacked line repeatedly without ever blocking the blitzing safeties. Terrible fucking coaching. I hope Alabama curbstomps them. Don't call off the dogs. Fucking murder them.

Yeah, I shouldn't post after ND games. Just an awful day for me. I apologize for the rant. All I am going to hear for the next month and a half is ND crap. I've already gotten texts from people I haven't talked to in multiple years rubbing it in as if ND had just beaten Michigan. I don't even get it. Makes it worse that Borges and Kiffin made the same stupid mistakes repeatedly. ND is not even one of the best 5 teams in the nation and they will beat Georgia after the Dawgs somehow upset Bama.
November 24th, 2012 at 11:29 PM ^
and we won't have to watch ND win a MNC
