Beilein on Burke
Beilein said the following re: Burke:
First, I would like to note that Wednesday's reports of Trey Burke's decision to enter the NBA draft were premature.
My coaching staff and I have met with Trey and his parents several times over the past two weeks. Collectively, we have gathered and shared with each of them some necessary information that we feel will help Trey make the most informed decision for his future.
The Burke family has been very receptive to our assistance and appreciates that we have encouraged Trey to take his time and look at all of his options between now and the April 10 deadline.
With only one full week of classes remaining, Trey and his teammates, like all students at Michigan, are working diligently to complete their assignments and prepare for final exams.

I've been wavering on this, but if the kid does not want to be here next year then as Bo would say, those who stay will be champions. Good luck to him but I look forward to next year and the men that will be representing the maize and blue.
Eh, I think you actually mean what Rodriguez would say is I only talk about guys who play for Michigan.
Relax, dude. It's not that he "does not want to be here next year" as much as that he thinks he can make it to The League.
Support him either way. He's no less of a Michigan Man if he decides to try his luck in the NBA.
I see that rationality is unwelcome here.
In response to the previous post being negged away.
Rationality is Fascism. Fascism is a Cup of Tomato Soup. A Cup of Tomato Soup is a Book. A Book is a Gentleman's Agreement. A Gentleman's Agreement is Rationality. Rationality is Fascism.
There are no gentleman's agreements in the b10.
I have a hard time believing that Bo would consider someone a michigan man if they were gone after only a year.
were also champions.
Makes me wonder if the dormroom shot was a hoax.
i think that if you read between the lines, the inescapable conclusion is that the kid wants to go, but others are trying to talk him out of it. so he may very well have packed up his stuff.
i also think it's interesting that beilein references the april 10 deadline, rather than the april 29 one. i don't see what there is to be gained by declaring prior to april 29.
But for the sake of my cardiovascular system, I hope they're using that deadline.
April 10th was mentioned as the deadline for underclassmen to return in another thread. I have not verified this but Coach's comment seems to confirm. As far as the picture of his dorm room goes, has anyone seen another one to compare? Maybe he never unpacked from moving in for fall. Maybe that's how he organizes his laundry. I'm glad there aren't any pictures of my old dorm room floating around on the net (mostly because Al Gore hadn't invented it yet!!).
Where there's smoke, there's fire. When word came of him serious considering, I had to believe he would probably go, and I still believe that. The Michigan fan in me hopes he stays, but in the end it is almost certain that he is gone.
Think about it: You have a stunningly good freshman season. The NBA is a point guard league. You've always dreamed of playing in the NBA. You could get drafted first round. Your good friend "Jared" is doing the same thing, only his draft stock has slipped as his second year has exposed all of his weaknesses.
You are 19 years old. Class is a drag, especially when you think there are cooler things on the horizon. You could be making six or seven figures in a couple of months. That's enough money to buy the new iPad, a new car, and your own place (skip this dorm stuff). That's a hard idea to turn down, even if your parents and coach are advising you against it. You could be in the NBA this year.
I don't think it's wise, but I understand the mentality.
that is the decision making process, for better or for worse. Andit's really too bad because that process is an instant gratification, short-sighted thought process that typically causes more problems than it solves in life. But like all others in the M family, if he makes that decision, I wish him luck.
Are you suggesting that a picture posted on the internet may not be precisely what it appears to be? If so, I would like to invite you to a duel!!!
BOOM ZELL MILLER'D
I am Aaron Burr. Duel accepted.
is right. This thing is turning into Burke-gate and it is really getting old. Twitter photographs of a kid's dormroom?! Come on, really everybody including JB should let him do what he is going to do. At some point a kid has to make his own decisions and it is right around Trey's age when that transition takes place. He is a year away from guaranteed money and good money at that, leaving now would be a historically bad decision but it is his decision. I don't see the upside to him returning next year at this point, not for him, not for the team, not for the fans. His heart is out of it already (not entirely sure it was ever really in it - Michigan that is) and you really can't get that back.
You're putting a lot of words in the kid's mouth. Is it impossible that he loves both Michigan and the NBA and is genuinely conflicted? And the idea that his parents (!) and Beilein should have no input is just . . . bizarre. You don't stop being a parent just because your kid is in college.
possible, but from the looks and sound of things, his decision is made. As for his parents, at some point you have said your peice and that is that. As a parent, you prevent your kid from the going to the kegger at the cool kids house for so long but at some point that turns into "don't say I didn't warn you" and that is that.
From his twitter last week, "I thought this was my life!" It is Trey, do your thing.
So when Satch Sullinger told his son last year, "You're not ready to be a professional. You're 19!" he was out of place?
This isn't a trivial decision. It's a life-changing one. Burke's parents, who have lived in the world a lot longer than he has, have every right to offer their insight, just as Mr. Sullinger did. A lot of 19-year-olds think they have it all figured out. Then they get a little older and surprise, they realize they don't.
depends on whether Sullinger wanted to be drafted #2 like last year, or #10 like this year. Possibly Satch wants that one back huh?
How many times can we say, "Those Who Stay Will Be Champions," before the meaning of the phrase nullifies itself?
He already helped win Michigan its first Big Ten basketball title since 1986.
I'm guessing Burke wanted / wants to go and word of that got out and was expanded to HE GONE while Beilein and his parents were still in discussions with him. If it's true Burke's parents want him to stay, I feel a lot better about the prospects of him being here next year
...although Trey may hate all of us now for how we initially reacted (and will react again in the future)
I think it is somewhat understanable to react the way we did here. We are part of the mgoblog and nobody ever said we are a sane bunch.
What is not okay are those idiots who tweeted him directly. Twitter brings out the worst in fans sometimes.
i am sick of reading about how we, on a Michigan sports blog, should not criticize his decision or say we think he is making a mistake. That's sort of the point of blogs. What's next? We can't criticize Denard if he throws 4 jump ball interceptions or Lewan if he misses 5 blocks?
Criticism does not equal a lack of support.
Right, but I think most people are fine with criticism. I'm fine with saying, "Denard, that was an unacceptable throw" or "THJ, you're shooting at a rate below the standard existing for MBB".
There's a big difference between saying that and commenting that Trey Burke is a bad person based on this decision, or that Denard is evil based on his interceptions.
otherwise it wouldn't take so long to make a decision.
I understand its a tough decision for a 19 yr old, but I'd rather he just ripped off the bandaid already and we could move on.
Is that maybe a typo? Or a misspeak on JB's part? The drop deadline is Apr 29, no? Good to see him mention about exams.
Players have until April 10th to withdraw from the draft and maintain eligibility, but they can declare as late as april 29th.
I guess to clarify, I thought it was consensus that no one really gained anything by declaring before the 29th, especially a fringe guy that might consider coming back. But I see that it has been discussed above.
Yes. With the new bargainin rules came this random date 60 days before the draft to declar. But the NCAA has their own date of April 10th to retract and keep eligibility. Hence you are right that it serves no benefit to declare earlier but it may be what has gotten trey to move up on the boards. Its unlikely that Trey retracts his name from the draft and then sends it back it a couple weeks later.
Scout has always been negative re: Burke staying.
Rivals was positive but their tune has changed in the last 24 hours.
Brian is clearly not positive.
Why are people still holding out hope? Either assume he is gone, or ignore everything until a decision is made.
That was my attitude until Rivals went sour and that twitpic of his dorm room showed up. Now my tune has changed as well.
Kinard gonna get you Omar. WATCH OUT.
Oh, InDEED.
itself, according to:
- Dee Hart
- Josh Garnett
- Alex Kozan
- Demar Dorsey
- Bri'onte Dunn
- [Insert name here]
But none of those players ever played for Michigan. Trey known what it's all about.
will not play a decisive role in his decision. Decisive consideration is probably "2nd round and bus rides across Eastern Europe vs. stay and play for a better chance to get paid."
For all we know, Trey may hate college life. It's not for everybody.
readers of mgoblog know that Dorsey's name is often associated with slim chances.
Even to this day there are those that think he may still get here.
