Guess it's down to one school.
February 27th, 2012 at 7:42 PM ^
And that one school he chose already had four 4* and two 3* offensive linemen joining three 4* and one 3* from last year. Don't think competition or the number of commits we had was going to be an issue.

I thought this was odd too. In the previous thread, someone mentioned his mom cited our OL class as a concern. I was wondering how 6 means better opportunity than 4 but with the SEC one can never be surprised.

I am really cool with it unless he is the next coming of Steve Hutchinson or something.

The most bizarre hype over a 3* kid...maybe ever.
February 27th, 2012 at 6:17 PM ^
been a nice 4* pick-up if he had chosen Michigan.

And the hype was ridiculous whether he picked Michigan or not. It's not sour grapes. He was getting Demar Dorsey and Stefon Diggs hype. At least they were 5* headcases rather than 3* headcases.

Vinopal was 1000x weirder.
February 27th, 2012 at 6:02 PM ^
Damn those vision quests. They are so biased against Michigan.

Well I'm glad his spirit guide showed him the vision of War Eagle. Reminds me of David Oku. Good luck to him though.

I heard he was off developing the perfect Monkey Bread recipe. He'd found it, and was ready to commit to UM. All he had to do was check in with MGoBlog to check the weather among the fans before calling Hoke. There, he discovered that he had not, in fact, discovered the perfect recipe, whereupon he gave up all hope and meaning in life and decided to commit to Auburn. From now on, I think we should say that we were Monkeybreaded.
February 27th, 2012 at 6:03 PM ^
acqua, do you think if he would've committed to UM, that we would have been in danger of losing one of our 2013 OL committs? does this mean that we may take 6 in 2013?
February 27th, 2012 at 6:05 PM ^
According to Sam Webb, coaches told recruits that they were only taking five. Oddly enough, I talked to Laremy Tunsil yesterday who said he still wanted to take an official to Michigan. I don't think the coaches could say no to him if his interest turns out to be legitimate. Whether he really is that interested is another story, but I would say that he's been curious about Michigan for a while now.
February 27th, 2012 at 6:13 PM ^
I know this was largely covered in the "do we allow other linemen to visit" thread, but I really don't think we could accept a commit from Tunsil or Pocic if the coaches really told the linemen we have signed up that 5 was the number of linemen in this class. With Hoke and the other coaches selling character and molding of young men (which I buy, BTW), I think taking a 6th would undermine that and hurt them down the road more than they would benefit in adding one of these guys.
February 27th, 2012 at 6:22 PM ^
If a consensus five-star (let alone top-3 overall) recruit wants to play at your school, you find a way to fit him in. You can't turn down talent at that level.
EDIT: I understand your point, I just think there are extenuating circumstances in a case like Tunsil's.
February 27th, 2012 at 6:26 PM ^
Would you say the same thing for Pocic? I only ask because while I've never held my breath for Tunsil, I think Pocic was / is a real possibility, and once Kugler committed one of the first things I wondered about was if that meant we were out of the running for him.
February 27th, 2012 at 6:42 PM ^
I don't know if I'm the only one feeling this way but I could care less whether Tunsil or Pocic visit anymore. Our OL haul is epic and my focus is on getting some commits from skill players and DB/DE/DT/LB.
February 27th, 2012 at 7:08 PM ^
Yes, I agree. I would rather have 5 4-star lineman on my O-Line than 1 five star prima donna and whatever else commits and plays. Five stars have a lot of upside potential but they can always flop and flop hard. See The University of Texas, always pulling in the five stars but they always seem to never live up to their potential. A kid that is told he is the greatest thing eva never has much to work hard for. A kid who is told "so and so is better" has someone to set their sights on. Mean nasty bastards with a chip on their shoulder will always have a place in my heart.
February 27th, 2012 at 6:41 PM ^
You can when it undermines your credibility.
February 27th, 2012 at 8:09 PM ^
I think you'd be hard pressed to find any coaching staff that turns down a consensus five-star recruit at any position. The only conceivable situation I could see is at a position like quarterback.
February 27th, 2012 at 8:11 PM ^
As asked above, are the coaches still recruiting Pocic? Would they turn him down? Sorry, I am also curious.
February 27th, 2012 at 8:14 PM ^
Does Tommy Schutt count?
February 27th, 2012 at 8:21 PM ^
Schutt wasn't a consensus top-five player like Tunsil is. I also believe Scout was the only five-star rank he held. You're obviously splitting hairs with the comment, but my point is that an agreed talent of Tunsil's level is going to go where he wants. Nobody would actually turn that guy down.
RE: Pocic, I can't really say whether or not Ethan is still talking with the coaches, I haven't talked to him since after his visit for the basketball game.
February 27th, 2012 at 8:19 PM ^
There is a difference between Schutt and Tunsil as Tunsil appears to be a consensus top 5 recruit while Schutt was falling in rankings and many programs seemed interested in other guys the recruiting rankings didn't pick up on. Also, he wasn't a consensus 5 star.
But you are right that the coaching staff will turn down highly rated guys at positions already filled.
February 27th, 2012 at 8:10 PM ^
There is validity to your point and it is not bad. The one thing I would say, especially about Tunsil, is that some of these higher rated guys will take their time and make a decision on signing day or close to. In that time, we could lose a prospect and leave us in a lurch at a position of need, ala Stacey. Recruiting til the end and attempting to keep some doors open on top end talent is never a bad idea. That being said, I have mixed feelings on replacing committed kids with higher ranked prospects and if Hoke expects committment and honesty, then he should always strive for that (all indications are that he does).
February 28th, 2012 at 1:43 PM ^
I think there is definitely a distinction between allowing visitors in case someone decommits and actually accepting another commitment when you said you wouldn't.
February 27th, 2012 at 6:03 PM ^
Not many names with a Z in it. Bozo comes to mind...and fitting!
February 27th, 2012 at 6:03 PM ^
Doesn't ruin my day one bit. the 2013 kids will keep on comin' and I will be buckled up for it all. Wish him the best of luck at Auburn.
February 27th, 2012 at 6:04 PM ^
Will he announce in 36 hours or is this official?

Thank God! Enjoy kid. Recruiting is over, you are now just a Freshman.
February 27th, 2012 at 6:04 PM ^
that was quick, and just wasted my last 5 minutes on my last post on the other thread.
February 27th, 2012 at 6:05 PM ^
I am glad that ship finally sailed. The entire thing was silly and 2013 has buried any frustration with the way the last bit of recruiting played out in 2012. Deuces.
Now if only we could get that guy Yuri, or is it?..

Wonder how much of this decision was actually his. Wouldn't doubt if Michigan pulled his offer (don't know about Iowa).

February 27th, 2012 at 7:56 PM ^
Who is 'they'? If you're talking about Iowa, I said I don't know about Iowa meaning I can't answer your question. Michigan obviously got a commit from Kugler.
