Fiesta Bowl Open Thread
I am just going to go ahead and throw this one up here now since it is now 37-35 Wisky in the Rose Bowl and nobody in that game is playing all that hard on defense. I have the audio at least, so I can hear everything that is going on.
We've got Stanford (11-1) versus Oklahome State (11-1). If there was a game that almost should be the MNC but isn't, this one is probably the one if only because it is NOT a rematch. That would probably be the only reason though.
In all honesty, I do think Oklahoma State was hosed during bowl selections, but there's nothing to be done about it now - I went OSU (NTOSU) in this one. I like Luck, I think his draft stock is pretty high, but Gundy has a point to prove, and he is over 40 and a man, damnit.

So excited. I love the hyper commercialism of the whole thing.
January 2nd, 2012 at 7:45 PM ^
This is the only bowl in the series that is made complete by a jar of queso dip.
January 2nd, 2012 at 7:47 PM ^
I just love that the picture I posted is an actual screenshot from the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl a couple years ago. It's like having The Rose Bowl Game presented by Vizio have the game be broadcast by a camera pointed at a Vizio TV tuned to the game.
So fantastically awful.
January 2nd, 2012 at 7:49 PM ^
...is that we've all been fortunate so far that Metamucil has not opted to sponsor a bowl. The camerawork during that game would be....illegal?
January 2nd, 2012 at 7:55 PM ^
The idea of Musberger and Pam Ward sitting in side-by-side in his and hers crappers calling the game is pretty, uh, interesting.
January 2nd, 2012 at 7:58 PM ^
....it may have even been fitting somewhere back around the Beef O'Brady's Bowl. If only they had covered that game from that setting.
January 2nd, 2012 at 10:34 PM ^
the "his and hers crappers" bit reminds me of the Cialis commercials. Could you imagine Brent and Pam broadcasting the Cialis Fill-A-Chick Bowl from the bath tubs?
Note: Erin Andrews, however, will NOT be doing sideline coverage in the aforementioned game.

This just happened
January 2nd, 2012 at 8:08 PM ^
Oh no, I missed it. Worst moment of my day.
January 2nd, 2012 at 8:06 PM ^
Hahahahaha that actually just happened on the Rose Bowl for those who aren't watching.... Hahahaha what are the odds
January 2nd, 2012 at 8:34 PM ^
at least the B1G can't lose this game
January 2nd, 2012 at 8:48 PM ^
They've got Matt Millen calling the Fiesta Bowl? I'm just grateful that this means he can't call the Sugar Bowl. Still, what's with rewarding incompetence, ESPN?
January 2nd, 2012 at 8:51 PM ^
That is all.
January 2nd, 2012 at 8:51 PM ^
Sugar Bowl? I just hope Spielman and Pasch don't call it. I am so sick of Spielman doing Michigan games.
And wow the B1G is sucking it again in bowl season.

Nessler and Blackledge in the Sugar Bowl.
January 2nd, 2012 at 8:57 PM ^
Nessler and Blackledge are doing the Sugar Bowl. I like them. I like Sean McDonough (sp?), but feel terrible for him having to be stuck with MM week after week.
January 2nd, 2012 at 8:53 PM ^
get to play in the Rose Bowl last year vs. Wisconsi ... Geez, ouch, Luck!!!!
January 2nd, 2012 at 8:55 PM ^
That was a terrible pass by Luck. Throw it away guy.
January 2nd, 2012 at 8:58 PM ^
That was a worse throw by Weeden
January 2nd, 2012 at 8:56 PM ^
ND is promoting its defensive backs coach to offensive co-ordinator? It's true:
Weird.
January 2nd, 2012 at 8:59 PM ^
Remember, Kelly is still calling plays.
January 2nd, 2012 at 9:00 PM ^
That literally makes no sense. I'm guessing that Kelly just wants a puppet that he can sacrifice if the offensive calls he's going with aren't working.
January 2nd, 2012 at 8:58 PM ^
I am really liking OK State's uniforms. Badass. Too bad their QB just threw a pass to the plain-jane uniformed guys.
January 2nd, 2012 at 8:59 PM ^
....and we're off to a not Rose Bowl start in the Fiesta Bowl.
With that said, INT by Stanford. Weedon throws a badly underthrown ball.
January 2nd, 2012 at 8:59 PM ^
You are wearing black uniforms, not white.
January 2nd, 2012 at 8:59 PM ^
Milen is uniquely certified to speak on the subject of high draft picks and wide recivers so he is announcing this game because of that
January 2nd, 2012 at 9:01 PM ^
if that was Millen. Sure enough, it isn't my set exploding it is just a blowhard commentator.
January 2nd, 2012 at 9:03 PM ^
to Millen trying to justify a helmet-to-helmet hit.
January 2nd, 2012 at 9:00 PM ^
Why don't they make the goalposts taller? That just seems like common sense, doesn't it?
/may or may not have his whole bowl pool riding on this game
January 2nd, 2012 at 9:02 PM ^
a laser. Or another kind of sensor.
January 2nd, 2012 at 11:03 PM ^
I've noticed that some schools have shorter goal posts than we do. I think Iowa was one. I'm surprised the NCAA doesn't mandate a certain height.
January 3rd, 2012 at 1:27 AM ^
here that indicates that for high school, NCAA, and NFL, there is a 30 foot minimum for goal posts (and a 40 foot minimum in the CFL). I think most colleges' are much taller than that (the cross bar is 10 feet off the ground to give some perspective).
January 2nd, 2012 at 9:05 PM ^
Fire Millen!
January 2nd, 2012 at 9:06 PM ^
...that this is the sort of start that Luck did NOT want for the sake of his NFL draft status, but who knows in our topsy-turvy world?

When an industry is capable of buying advertising in every available commercial break on every network on all programming 7 days a week, something is awry. Everyone stop advertising, lower everyone's rates, and be done with it.
January 2nd, 2012 at 9:19 PM ^
...your GEICO mgoblog most insightful post of the day!
January 2nd, 2012 at 9:25 PM ^
But then how would you know that they had lowered their rates?
January 2nd, 2012 at 9:45 PM ^
The lowered rates.
January 2nd, 2012 at 9:12 PM ^
holding defense signs consisting of a pine tree and picket fence?
Pine fence?
Tree fence?
Stanford fence?
Christmas fence?
January 2nd, 2012 at 9:13 PM ^
...it is "Oaken Maple Eye Of Walnut" actually.
January 2nd, 2012 at 9:16 PM ^
Okay, that was a pretty pass.

...finds no one fitting the description of Ty Montgomery. TD Cardinal.

I just zipped through the latest SI "College Superfans" collection of photos. Normally it's a collection of Sparty-esque fans from schools of all ranges with a slight emphasis on cute women. This is the most blatant example of "emphasis" I've ever seen:
