What's the story on Connor Murphy ('16 WDE)?

Submitted by Larry Appleton on
I was browsing the latest crystal balls on 247 and I saw a recent for Connor Murphy to Michigan. I hadn't even heard his name come up in '16 recruiting discussions, but apparently 3 of his 5 predictions are to the good guys. 4-star 6'7 WDE sounds enticing. But does anyone have any insight into this recruitment? Is the interest recent, or have I just been missing all the updates? Was he at any of the camps? http://247sports.com/Player/Connor-Murphy-69285

HOLY SH**! I just realized that his name is a combination of the names of the two brothers in the Boondock Saints! WE MUST HAVE HIM!

It took 10 years for the second to come out, and that flick didn't generate nearly the amount of buzz as the first one. I wouldn't surprised if #3 never sees the light of day.

His older brother played for Harbaugh at Stanford, and while Harbaugh was recruiting his brother, their mother went into labor, and Harbaugh babysat Connor and his siblings for five hours. They drank milk and played chess. In classic fashion, Harbaugh kicked the young Murphy's ass in chess. Thats the connection, so a lot of people think he'll slide the UM

Family isnt so sure, but it's certainly something

Oregon seems to be the real favorite, with ASU a close second. But most seem to think Michigan is in his top group along with them and Michigan wants him as a part of the class; so there's at least a decent shot.

He's been interested for at least the past 6 months.  There was a story about him and Harbaugh a few months back and I think MLive.com did a rehash of that story a few weeks ago, i.e., about Harbaugh baby sitting him.

I think he was talked about MGoBlog a few times, including with respect to the babysitting story.

commit and prospect. Michigan seems to be picking up Crystal Balls for Johncarol Valentin recently. Also some news on Brandon Peters and Devin Bush Jr. at the Link

-Johncarlo Valentin ran the same 40 time as Tommy Kraemer (5.46), despite being 35 pounds heavier. Michael Onwenu ran .02 seconds slower than either of them, despite outweighing Kraemer by 62 pounds, and Valentin by 39. Onwenu is a freak. Also, Onwenu and Valentin are the two biggest guys at The Opening. I wouldn't be opposed to seeing that type of beef on the interior.

It's not affiliated with any sort of specific recruiting I guess. It's just a general skills competition sponsored and partnered by private companies that just happens to be held on/near the premises of a University.

Same reason any one of us can go to, say, a marketing conference, and come home with a thousand free pens.

It's definitely different than normal people with pens. These guys have to watch out for cream cheese on bagels. I just find it odd that the NCAA freaks out over the dumbest things but a huge Nike camp on ESPN is giving kids new shoes, clothes, gift packages.

I'm all for kids getting free stuff reasonably but just seems odd. I did read that all players are taken care of 100% but no university reps are allowed and any friends or family have to pay their own way.

I don't know why UA or Adidas don't have similar camps. I know UA has the all America game which also gives away a lot of cool gear to the participants.

That's not how it works.  Recruiting violations are assessed against schools, not against the kids who receive shoes.

Kid receives shoes from a school or from a booster affiliated with the school = recruiting violation.

Kid receives shoes from his grandmother for Christmas = NOT a recruiting violation.

Kid receives shoes from his local footlocker for being their 1000th customer = NOT a recruiting violation

Kid receives shoes from a stranger as a random act of kindness  = NOT a recruiting violation

Kid receives shoes from Nike camp not affiliated with any particular school = NOT a recruiting violation

Brophy (his high school name) sounds like what his bros call him.

By the way - long time lurker, first time poster. Glad my first post could be filled with such insight.

I'll also chime in as a first time poster, since Brophy Prep is my alma mater. I've been following the situation pretty closely, and Connor really likes Harbaugh, but thats the only reason we have a shot. ASU and Oregon are clear favorites at this point. Its gonna be a tough pull to get him out of pac12 country

while I don't think we get him he is the guy I'd put the highest percentage on being on the class come signing day (out of those not already verballed). I'd actually give him a higher % then a few guys that actually are verbals, tbh. Yet, I don't think we get him. I do think he comes out and it gives him a lot to think about but he ultimately stays West.
