I guess I never heard him say that, but I believe it.
In the meantime, that sounds like a perfectly reasonable thought from East Lansing's equivalent of Jesus.
November 15th, 2010 at 1:01 PM ^
None of that matters though. I could cheer for UM or any other school including my own and it wouldn't affect the game. I will do the same as I always do for UM. I watch the game and hope it is entertaining. If you guys win, you win. If you lose, you lose. I just want a good game.
I think most MSU fans feel this way with some portion of the fan base that hates UM and would like a loss.
However, none of this matters because Ohio State and Wisconsin are two outstanding teams and although I see an improvement with UM this year, I would assume you guys lose and end up 7-5. Nothing wrong with that, it's momentum to carry on to next year.
November 15th, 2010 at 10:33 AM ^
Win em both. Enjoy the Rose Bowl, Sparty.
November 15th, 2010 at 10:42 AM ^
I wouldn't put it beyond Sparty to self destruct.
You know when you panic. when you are more successful than you ought to be.
November 15th, 2010 at 10:36 AM ^
November 15th, 2010 at 10:37 AM ^
As annoying as it would be to see a mediocre MSU team go to the Rose Bowl, it is kind of funny knowing that they probably wouldn't be able to go but for the help of their Big Brother.
November 15th, 2010 at 10:37 AM ^
ya i could care less what happens to MSU, but it will be funny when they get stomped by someone like Bama in their bowl game..
MSU fans will have such high expectations for next year, and with all their losses coming up next year on D it looks like they won't be going 11-1 anytime soon again.
November 15th, 2010 at 10:45 AM ^
So you're saying that you do care? Did you mean to say "I couldn't care less"?
November 15th, 2010 at 10:45 AM ^
Correct me if I'm wrong, but while winning out would be great, winning only one of the next two would be bad in terms of bowl games. Beating Wisconsin or OSU would mean that the Big Ten loses the BCS at-large spot, which means everyone else gets bumped down a notch. And since according to ESPN we're not going to beat out Penn State for a bowl since it might be JoePa's last ... we might end up at the Texas Bowl or something. Still warm, though, for Darryl Stonum's sake.
November 15th, 2010 at 10:49 AM ^
You're wrong dude.
If we beat wisconsin/OSU the other, one of them would simply join MSU as a bcs team,
The only way we lose that second bcs spot is if Stanford finishes out without losing and two of those three teams lose another game.
November 15th, 2010 at 10:54 AM ^
Is never a bad thing. Who cares what bowl we go to if it means we will be playing for a chance to go 9-4?
November 15th, 2010 at 10:59 AM ^
There are a lot of scenarios that can still play out, but most have the B10 ending up with two 11-1 teams.
November 15th, 2010 at 10:46 AM ^
Sparty can go to the Rose Bowl or whatever. The sun shines on a dog's ass every once in a while.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:38 AM ^
...but it's been 22 years since Sparty has been there and dogs don't live that long.
November 15th, 2010 at 10:49 AM ^
Not only will it be great to beat Wisconsin and OSU, but nothing will cure my New Years Eve hangover better than watching the Wolverines win a bowl game, followed by the Spartans getting rocked by Stanford.
November 15th, 2010 at 10:49 AM ^
On the plus side, Stanford would probably crush them.
November 15th, 2010 at 10:53 AM ^
It would be sweet justice if they get crushed by a Stanford team coached by a Michigan Man
November 15th, 2010 at 10:51 AM ^
If it means beating Ohio State, I want to beat OSU. I don't care if it sends the Nazi's to the Rose Bowl.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:00 AM ^
vs a Panzer tank division?
I'll take Harbaugh by 7 as he goes all Patton on them.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:05 AM ^
You're underestimating Rommel with a month to prepare.
November 15th, 2010 at 10:53 AM ^
I would happily let Sparty go to the Rose Bowl if that means we end the ugly losing streak to tOSU.
November 15th, 2010 at 10:54 AM ^
I would prefer to have Michigan win out and MSU lose to Purdue and PSU though
November 15th, 2010 at 11:01 AM ^
Abraham Lincoln's letter to General Joseph Hooker:
"I have heard, in such a way as to believe it, of your recently saying that both the army and the government needed a dictator. Of course it was not for this, but in spite of it, that I have given you the command. Only those generals who gain success can be dictators. What I now ask of you is military success, and I will risk the dictatorship."
Get the victories, we can risk MSU in the Rose Bowl.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:08 AM ^
Laughably, he probably had the most embarassing loss of the Civil War. Lost the Fighting Joe moniker prettty quickly.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:05 AM ^
I was thinking about this yesterday. Then I realized, if Michigan finished 9-3, and had beaten Ohio State and Wisconsin, and was headed to a January 1 bowl game and probably in the top 15, and Denard was likely back in the Heisman talk, I probably wouldn't care a whole lot that cute little Spartina was going to Pasadena to get their asses whooped. Especially since the talk all off-season at that point will be Michigan coming back to be a top-ten team and in the national-title talk.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:05 AM ^
It is always appropriate for the big brother to help out the little brother by stomping the rear end of someone else!
November 15th, 2010 at 11:12 AM ^
But what does Ohio State need us to do!?!
November 15th, 2010 at 1:42 PM ^
If it doesn't involve pooping in a cooler, I'm guessing they don't have a rooting interest.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:15 AM ^
If we win the last 2 games no one in the UMich community is going to care about what MSU, OSU, or anyone else is doing...we will have over a month to bask in glory until the bowl games.
November 15th, 2010 at 1:10 PM ^
OSU is on a streak of Big Ten titles. I don't care if its MSU or Wiscosin who goes to the Rose Bowl, but I desperately want OSU to lose one of their last two games. Please let it be us that pulls the upset.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:16 AM ^
Good, it'd mean that we're 9-3, going to a Florida New Year's day bowl, and that we'll finish somewhere in the top 4 of the Big Ten.
It'll also mean that we see Sparty get smacked down in Pasadena by Stanford, Boise, or TCU.
It's Sparty-like to want to sacrifice the good of our program for the misfortune of theirs.
I'll cry the day I want to see them suffer more than I want to see us win.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:16 AM ^
I'm fairly certain that there are new rules for the Rose Bowl. If the Big Ten or Pac 10 champ plays in the national championship game (Oregon this year) The Rose Bowl has to replace them with a non-aq conference school (Boise or TCU) Because of this, Stanford won't be playing in the Rose Bowl. Whoever wins the Big Ten will end up playing Boise or TCU. I would love to see Sparty get smoked by one of them.
November 15th, 2010 at 1:46 PM ^
Auburn losing to either Alabama or S Carolina could put TCU or Boise St into the two spot.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:17 AM ^
The vast majority of the MSU nation hates Michigan more than they like their own team. Which backed up by the fact that a couple of seasons ago Dantonio did not want Michigan to win a game even though it would have sent his team to a better bowl, also the fact that they still have trouble selling out games at Spartan Stadium in the midst of a 1 loss season. Hating another team more than you like your own team is the fastest way to delegitimize a fanbase.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:22 AM ^
If that's the case then.....Go Blue. Still worried about winning at PSU though.
November 15th, 2010 at 1:54 PM ^
November 15th, 2010 at 11:24 AM ^
by either TCU, Boise State, Stanford or Oregon.
Regardless, I don't care if MSU makes the Rose Bowl. If Michigan can win out, it's a sure sign of progress and all set up for a run for the Big Ten title assuming that the defense makes progress from this year to next year.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:26 AM ^
Lets be good big brothers and help out out little brother
November 15th, 2010 at 11:28 AM ^
Would pretty much make me the happiest guy in the world (now that I've adjusted to the 3 losses). You're looking at a top 20, probably top 15 team going into a bowl game if that happened and that'd be totally awesome! On top of that think of all those recruits who are waiting to see how we do - they'd be committing to UM faster than Tom could get their Hello posts ready!
November 15th, 2010 at 11:37 AM ^
I'd rather win out than whatever happens to Michigan State.
I really don't care what happens in East Lansing. Not our rival.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:39 AM ^
Sorry, if I missed it, but I can't believe that no one mentioned that beating OSU would send MSU to the Rose Bowl. As long as MSU and OSU are tied in first place, it's always going to come down to BCS. If we beat OSU, Wisconsin loses the head-to-head with MSU.
The best thing that could happen is for MSU to lose to PSU so that winning our last two games would setup the tie again and the highest rated would go. I would guess that would be Wisconsin for winning the last week.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:45 AM ^
The funny thing is Dantonio would root for Michigan to lose to Ohio State even if it meant his team would lose out on a trip to Rose Bowl as a result.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:45 AM ^
Good point....although this thread is somewhat meaningless with an OSU loss in Iowa City next week.
November 15th, 2010 at 11:46 AM ^
against OSU. If we get a lead, will his perpetual "I've got a hemorrhoid the size, texture, and hardness of a lemon" expression dissolve into a smile?
November 15th, 2010 at 12:00 PM ^
If MSU wins out and Wisconsin and OSU lose to us, they deserve to go to the Rose Bowl. They're having a great season, I don't see what the problem is here. Would anyone seriously pass up on beating Wisconsin and/or OSU just to avoid having to listen to MSU fans talk about going to the Rose Bowl?
November 15th, 2010 at 12:11 PM ^
Judging from some of the blog and radio comments after the Illinois and PU games, I am certain that some of the fire RR/Hire Harbaugh crowd secretly want us to lose both games badly to buttress their case. There were people calling into the local WTKA post-game show after Illinois actually stating that they were disappointed we won because it made the firing of RR less likely.
November 15th, 2010 at 12:07 PM ^
I don't think anybody should assume that MSU's got this locked up, in part because of the possible scenarios involving Paterno.
1). JoePa announces before the game that this is his last season, meaning the MSU game is the last regular season game for him at Beaver Stadium.
2). JoePa doesn't say anything, but in the absence of information, speculation is rampant that the MSU game is his last regular season game in Beaver Stadium.
3). JoePa announces he's coming back next season.
If either 1 or 2 are the case, then MSU is going to be facing an absolutely frenzied PSU team and stadium.
If #3 is the case, the PSU team and fans will still be charged up, but only for the normal game reasons.
November 15th, 2010 at 12:08 PM ^
It's an unfortunate side-effect of winning. It's likely either going to be them or OSU (or Wisco), and honestly, I will be happy if we ended up denying OSU the roses. Heck, it would be fun denying both OSU and Wisco, it's fun to play the spoilers.
Plus in the end, we'd be able to say "Dear MSU, You're welcome. Love, Michigan"
But they still have to beat PSU at Happy Valley...clearly no walk in the park.
In any event, will anyone around these parts care if that happens? We'd be 9-3 damnit! It would be our D finally has gelled, and our offense is a monster.
November 15th, 2010 at 12:26 PM ^
But who cares. 9-3 would be nice and means we break the losing streak to OSU. As long as Sparty isn't playing for a national championship, who gives a darn.
