Sam Webb says two of his sources are telling him Harbaugh to Michigan is unlikely

Submitted by Raskolnikov on

"The feeling of two sources that know and talk to Harbaugh (one of which has been actively selling the 49ers coach on the virtues of returning to Michigan) is that he isn’t likely to choose college over the pros.  It’s a sentiment that has grown stronger over the past few days."

Personalities like JH and other top dogs aren't motivated by money so much as power. He's already made enough to be comfortable his whole life and his children and children's children will never have a need. It's a power struggle in SF that has him in play right now. His next employer will need to add power and authority to his compensation package.

Sam Webb.

unless he gets a new gut feeling, and that is that Harbaugh is coming.

Then I love Sam Webb.

More seriously, all of this insider source bullshit kind of stuff is stupid and pretend journalism. Everyone made a big deal out of Sam's "scoop" that Brady was being fired. Who cares? At some point in time, the event that Brady is getting fired happens. When it does, we know about it. Why does everyone think it is a big deal to hear about it an hour or two early because there is some leaky faucet inside the athletic department?

A real scoop is getting news that otherwise NO ONE WOULD EVER HEAR ABOUT. If you just report something that is about to happen, it is not of value to society. Yes, it gives us something to talk about, but not much else.

In this specific case, it's really hard to judge the value of this type of information. Maybe tomorrow Jim will wake up and decide to go to Michigan. Then we'll hear "oh he changed his mind". Or he'll decide not to, and people will say "look, Sam knew". This is dumb. Only Jim knows what he will do, and all of this "I know people who know" crap is a waste of time. We'll know when we know.

Where you hear info from Rivals or GBW, all the insiders have our chances at 50/50 right now. The process is playing out right now and Hackett is making a big play for him. We have a legitimate shot and it's all up to what JH wants.

I know it's easier said than done but we just need to be patient and trust the process. We should have an answer in the next 2-3 weeks. JH won't hang us out to dry!

Webb has always been pretty spot on with recruiting. That being said, he was pretty out of touch with Dave Brandon's departure, and even seemed misinfirmed regarding Hoke.

This is all noise. Hackett needs to get it done. Period.

IIRC, there was a lot of back and forth with sources before Urban was hired at OSU. Bottom line is that they got their guy and have lost three games in the last three years. It's our turn to get it done or not.

LOL this thread. Obviously a lot people don't comprehend what "50-50" means and have failed to prepare accordingly. It could be worse you guys! We could be hiring McElwain, or be locked in on....wait for it....Bret Bielema. My uninformed and edu-ma-cated guess is this: it's the wife. Never underestimate the wife in such decisions. Many men choose misery over happiness and dreams. This happens every goddamned day. You can watch this event on your own. Just take 10 minutes and go to any shopping mall with a jewelry store. "Every gift begins with Kay!" Nobody is warning these guys.

I understand her love of the Bay Area - I'd move there in a heartbeat. But as a coach's wife, it's a little limiting to say she only wants to live there. He would have to either work things out with SF, go to Oakland, or go back to Stanford. Since they have little kids, we're talking a lot of years of possibly compromising the job dream for the wife wants to live in the Bay Area dream. I wonder if she's ever been to Ann Arbor.

Sometimes, those of us with a "Y" just find it an easier life to acquiesce to those with "X-X" even when we're the breadwinners. I know that's what I've done on two occasions when outstanding job opportunities came my way but required a move. One of those locations was actually a place we'd talked about moving to for a long time, but then children came along, her family is here in Michigan, and that was that.

I don't know where she's originally from but I could see someone from the west coast lumping together Michigan with places like Iowa, Kansas and Nebraska - it's all the midwest. My husband had a job offer in Milwaukee (we live outside of Chicago) and I said, "Have a nice commute." I understand not wanting to uproot the kids for a place you perceive as much less attractive than where you are, especially when you're already making a butt load of money. But as a Michigan fan, Ann Arbor is my proof that there is a God. Aside from the winters, I can't imagine anyone not wanting to live here.

That's pretty much the line I was given when I told her about the two offers - one of which was in Florida, where we'd planned to move in the Years Before Children.

But getting back to the "Y" traits, I'm pretty sure I could have "traded up" had I moved to Florida, right? :-)

I was just in Miami a few weeks ago and there was more silicone in that city than the dumpster behind Dow Corning. Not to suggest that a woman with plastic surgery is "trading up", but senior citizens they were not.

It wasn't just Anywhere, FL, but rather Orlando specifically. My wife and I had talked about moving because we both loved Disney and had both wanted to have careers there. I got the opportunity with a very well-known company (not Disney) near Orlando but the ship had already sailed.

That's life.

There is the youth and partying of Miami and South Beach for sure. My father lives in Naples, and there's some partying there, too. But just think of all the octogenarian drivers! Reason enough to say no to FLA.

"Many men have chosen misery over happiness and dreams" A very close friend of mine is the most talented musician I have ever personally been around. While away at music school he had several offers to tour with very recognizable acts and some studio gigs. His girlfriend at the time didn't want to move so he declined them all. After school they got married then divorced after a few years. He's still stuck in dinkyville playing out and giving lessons. Guys sometimes make really poor or illogical decisions for their spouse.

Harbaugh - not coming and never was

Miles - will never get offered the job

Jo Harbaugh - true pipe dream

Schiano - WILL be UM's next head coach.

He's a hard-ass and may not be fit to be HC at UM but in the end I just see him as the next coach.  It will divide the fan-base but winning cures all.

With so many so called experts reporting their thoughts, it can be a roller coaster the next few weeks.   Until Brian says differently, I'm staying positive after his last post:

"it is a fact that he is telling his Michigan guys that he's seriously thinking about it. "  Referring to coming to Michigan

Lmao everybody loves Sam until he starts saying things people don't like. Iirc over the past couple of weeks he's been pretty upfront about not having much real insider info. The fact that he's citing sources right now should really tell you something - this guy is legit plugged in, and this shouldn't be discounted just because Brian or Tom Beaver say otherwise.

Unfortunately, bad news and not inconsistent with prior reports.  The simple picture being painted by the tea leaves right now is that we are giving it our best shot but it's not likely to be enough.  Giving it our best shot is all that I have ever asked for.  I was afraid that we would go to Harbaugh but put a half-assed offer on the table.  If we offered to make him the highest paid football coach and he turned us down, then it wasn't meant to be and it's time to move on.  "Unlikely" is still better than zero, so it could still happen, but it's otherwise time to hope that there's a great Plan B guy available.

to have either Harbaugh as the next Michigan coach I seriously doubt either will come. I'm not sure Les Miles is a great coach at this point - I think he has benefited a lot from the talent pool down south. That leaves us with an unknown coming in, maybe from the fringes.

Sam Webb is saying that it's unlikely.  I have been lamenting this post more this morning than I should have.  Here is the thing though.  You tube is filling up with all sorts of soundbites from the likes of PTI, Cowherd, radio hosts etc.  And NONE of them said that Harbaugh would leave the NFL for college.  Period.  It's an impossibility.  Cowherd even said, that USC and Texas went after him before with big money and he passed.

To suggest that up to this point, that it's merely "unlikely" rather than say come out and unequivocally say he isn't interested.  When to a person, who knows Harbaugh, they have said that he has interest in coming back, is remarkable.

So I am still staying optimistic.  It wouldn't shock us.  Because this is Michigan.  But it would shock the world.  Which would be awesome.

So until he signs on the line with someone else, will I believe it's over.

I heard Cowherd say that but he is uninformed on most things. He's probably the worst at ESPN in regards to just saying things for the sake of saying something. When Russillo does his Cowherd impersonation it's spot on with how absurd his opinions are.

and he is an unabashed NFL slappy as is every national sports radio personality.  But what's inherent there is the national perception.

People associated with the NFL view going back to college is similar to leaving the Detroit Tigers to go manage the Toledo Mudhens.  That's just the way they view it.

Had he won the Super Bowl, I think we might stand a chance. I just believe someone with his demeaner still feels like he has something to prove. If he were to leave now it would almost give the impession he can't compete at that level. And he doesn't want that. Many say look at Saban and Miami, he left without saying good-bye. Maybe Saban was smart enough to realize he wasn't going to have the control over the pro players as he does with College kids. You not going to tell a pro what time to go to bed, what to wear, what to eat and so on.

Media has a job and its to earn "page clicks". I'm Not saying JH is coming or not interested. But even those with the sources are going to put out what will get the most clicks of the day. How do you do that? Jack with the readers emotions. "JH is coming" the next day "JH to Michigan might not happen after all" then it's "JH to Michigan will depend on timing according to AD".
Don't let your emotions ride on the media attempt to get "page clicks". JH and Hackett already know the answer. The longer all the talk is about JH and only JH coming or even NOT coming it will be JH saying yes and coaching here next year.

Get worried when reports from other areas around the country say Michigan was in town and then the coach of the area has to answer questions about Michigan being in town. Until then it's JH to Michigan.
