You don't have to like it. Those who know talent know it's a GREAT move. Peters is really good. McCaffrey is really good. Patterson was and probably still is better than both of those guys.
The only downside is if Peters transfers. I doubt he will at this point because he knows he is at least on equal footing and he has had good results. But if Patterson doesn't pan out and Peters is the starter we're right where we would have been anyway. And if for some reason, Peters does transfer, good luck to him. McCaffrey is no joke either. He can step in.

I know things changes and they change a lot in two decades. But I can't help thinking about that photo with Brian, Scott, Tom and one more I think. i am aware Tom thought about transferring but decided against it. Now Wilton's was understandable. He had one year left and knew he did not have a "Yes Wilton, you're number one," from Harbaugh.
But he's got his degree and that's the big thing with UM. All these young men know they'd be giving up more than just a chance to compete for the qb position. They all stayed all got the UM diploma, all NFL pensions except maybe Scott but they all had more than a dance. Tom, much much more. Things, as I said, do change, but there is just too much that can happen and it always does and all three would have their chances and all three would probably go to the league from here and they know that.

Every year is important, but next year with a tough schedule is particularly important in Michigan's journey to become an elite program again under Harbaugh. If Michigan becomes quarterback U again it would greatly benefit the program. Having a highly talented stable of quarterbacks going into next season would be a good problem to have, particularly after the two biggest rivalry games this year where the defense played great but we came away with losses.

I think we're actually better off. Now, instead of a guy who has never seen the field, we have a backup with guru-approved talent and solid experience.
December 6th, 2017 at 6:22 AM ^
Perhaps never more true than now, if we get multiple transfers at key positions.
Besides, if these players have aspirations to play on Sundays, there will be much more competition there. If they can't make it in A2, forget about the NFL.

Watch some footage of Patterson this year and then see if you still feel that way.
I wasn't all for bringing in Rudock in 2015, even after his first few games. But Jake showed a lot of heart and now when I think of him it's as a Michigan QB, not some transfer from Iowa.
Wisconsin fans probably feel similarly about Russell Wilson

then one of them will win the QB competition next summer. Saying Brandon deserves it next year is just wrong. He needs to earn it. Dylan may beat both Brandon and Patterson out next summer and he will be the starter. I'm sure Wilton would have stayed if Harbaugh had promised that he would be the starter in 2018. Wilton probably just knew the young guns would overtake him in summer camp and he would be 2nd or 3rd backup and decided to play his final season somewhere else where he would get to be the starter.

...others will. I'm guessing Peters is not too happy about this development. First he gets passed over by Harbaugh for JOK, even though he and many others thought he 'won' the backup position by his play on the field and in the spring game. Then JH comes out with some gimmick excuse about Peters being 'too quiet' in order to justify his decision. And now another vote of 'no confidence' from your head coach. Peters isn't afraid of competition. He just thinks his head coach has already made his decision. Not much Peters can do about it, but I bet the wheels are spinning.

and then where would we be? Our entire depth chart is a player coming off a head injury, a freshman, walkons and recruits who haven't even signed yet.
Sitting pat with that hand because of some idealized concept of how CFB should work is ignoring the reality of trying to win in today's game. We demand our coaches compete for championships. Without breaking any rules or violating our ethical standards and caring about the players as students. We're already handicapping our coaches relative to some competitors..That's something our coaches sign up for when they come here.
So why not add some arbitrary standards that make it even harder? No transfers because toughening the competition may be seen as a lack of confidence to the players on the roster. Too bad if your own players transfer out. A sophomore is entitled to be the most experienced player when that happens.
QB transfers aren't new We had them under Carr, and probably before then. Shea is not a grad transfer, btw. A good chance he's here for two seasons.

because of poor QB play. If a transfer came in and won because he raised the level of play, that should raise the morale of the team too.
Recruiting success will follow the same pattern.

As much as people neg you, I believe you have a point. Michigan generally avoided JUCOs and transfers for a long time for exactly those reasons.
While it can certainly help your team in the short term in terms of talent, it can hurt your program in the longer turn. Players can't help but "trust the process" less. It can change your locker room. It treats players as expendable.
It can hurt recruiting too, as coaches make it clear that they may always bring in somebody else from outside. Yes, we want players who aren't afraid to compete and while that sounds great as a slogan, they also need to trust the coaching staff and program that they belong and that they are in the right place.

Improper use of a proper plural. Ten yard penalty; repeat the down.

We still don't know if he can play right away. Lawyers are on the case, but I bet there is a decent shot if the coaches are going this hard after so many players.
December 5th, 2017 at 11:24 PM ^
You bring up an interesting point I had not thought of by mentioning lawyers. I assume in a case like this that Patterson and the other Ole Miss players need a lawyer to protect their rights as student athletes (in general but also in particular this case where they can potentially transfer due to the school's malfeasance). Who advocates for them? Who pays? Is the school allowed to provide the student athletes with lawyers to help them? Does anyone know how this works?
December 6th, 2017 at 12:30 AM ^
I'm pretty sure the player/family pays. You only get a lawyer if you can afford one. But perhaps the families of the Ole Miss players in question have gone in together for an attorney(s).

Isn't Miss St lifting limitations on where players can go (today) a further admission of some wrong doing? Kind of like 'we effed up, so go where you want'. Plus self-imposed sanctions.
I feel like that puts the NCAA on their own to defend limiting the players movement. Going to be costly.

Maybe not for himself, but I think one reason Harbaugh might want Shea even/especially if he doesn't have eligibility next year is how much it would help the defense if he ran scout with his running ability.

I believe most of those heal in about 3-4 months. Injury happened in October, so the standard timeline would be about February. In time for spring ball.

The people who keep saying, what will Peters think or worried that this might stunt his development.
The reason we are going after this quarterback is because Peters, a kid who enrolled early, couldn't even get past O'Korn on the depth chart in the offseason.
And when given the chance to start, he lasted 3 games before getting hurt.
Even with the team's flaws, Michigan could have been 10-2, 11-1 range with competent QBing.
Michigan needs as many options as possible. The coaches schemed a win against Ohio State, but we had a QB that couldn't execute it because he isn't talented enough.
December 6th, 2017 at 12:31 AM ^
Fuck off with the Peters hate, especially the insinuation that he wasn't tough enough to last more than three games.
