OT: Jerry Palm

Submitted by Boner Stabone on March 14th, 2022 at 12:14 PM

How does Jerry Palm still have a job as a bracketologist?   He has had Michigan out of his bracket for the last week and even going into Sunday and then somehow, for no rhyme or reason at 5:00 on Sunday afternoon he updates his bracket one last time and inserts Michigan into his last 4 in.  That seems extremely sketchy.

Its almost as if CBS were feeding him the final brackets from the committee meetings before they released them. I think his credibility is shot as far as predicting the brackets going into the future.  I believe he missed on 3 or 4 teams last year and his shenanigans this year do not help him.

I mentioned this on another thread but the continued obsession with Jerry Palm indicates he's very good at his job.

CBS is not in the business of predicting NCAA committee behavior.  They are in the media business.  They get paid for clicks, views and engagement.  Hence, that is Palm's job.

What better way to get clicks, views and engagement than to troll one of the biggest fan bases in college sports?  If we thought we were safely in (which we were), would we have been hanging on every game, every update this week?

Conforming is boring in his business.  You get attention when you're contrarian, and he's paid to get attention.  Shock, awe and outrage is what sells.

Somehow Notre Dame got in, only being on 54/100 brackets as of Sunday afternoon.  So he of course got that right as a homer.  His 11th hour addition of us is bullshit and should be a mark against him and not be considered a correct pick.

Of note I count 4 "perfect brackets".  Stag, Scott, Dom, and BE.  But check out bracket RTS.  Woof.  Don't quite your day job.

Our own résumé held up pretty well over the weekend actually.   Iowa and Purdue (two teams that we beat) played for the BTT title, SDSU reached the final of the MWC tournament, and our loss to IU was effectively offset by the fact that they then beat Illinois and punched their ticket into the NCAA tournament (which then made our win in Bloomington look better).

We pretty much stayed pat on the committee's S-curve.  VT and Richmond stealing bids was the only negative for us.

Palm was just out to lunch the whole time with his "You must be four games over .500 to get a bid" mantra, and he kept leaving us out because of it.  It seems like someone at CBS finally tipped him off on Sunday that we were getting in and he grudgingly put us in to salvage his reputation.

Everyone knew he would do that last minute. It’s called click bait. He knows how large the Michigan fanbase is. He’s getting the attention he wanted. Stop consuming his information, then he might go away.

I sincerely doubt Palm is trying to clickbait. He's CBS's bracketologist. If he worked for some small sports blog, or just had his own bracket site, then yeah he'd probably be trying to generate clicks. But, he's employed by the network that OWNS the NCAAT. He doesn't need to clickbait, people will go to see his bracket predictions because it's on CBS.

No kidding.  Imagine if ESPN started to produce clickbait articles and headlines and put talking heads on TV that say outrageous things in an effort to capture an audience. There’s no way that the decision makers at the big big sports outlets would say and do things to piss people off to create engagement.  If a model like that worked imagine what you would see on Facebook and YouTube.

lol OP is very triggered that Jerry Palm was not being fair to the Michigan basketball team with his brackets. How dare somebody not place us in their bracket?!? OUTRAGE.

For real though up to the last day something like 130/135 brackets on bracket matrix had us in, Jerry Palm's did not. He is ranked pretty low in terms of accuracy compared to a lot of other brackets overall the last 10 years. So prob would just value his takes less in the future and move on with life.

He still had A&M as above the first four, not missing the field. So it wasn't that he got tipped off, although there is no reasonable explanation for moving Michigan up at the last minute.

He was also off by 2 seed lines for 6 different teams, including having one of the 15 seeds as a 13, which is inexplicable.  CS-Fullerton is 153rd in NET, below every other team he had listed as a 13, all of his 14s, and all of his 15s, and is two spots ahead of Georgia State, one of his 16s.  He also had Wyoming as a 10, which is hard to fathom.  He sucks out loud.

Frankly it is hard for me to understand how Texas A&M is not in the tournament.  22-12, 4 Quad 1 wins, 5-0 in Quad 2 games, NET 42.  Just beat Auburn and blew out Arkansas on consecutive days, already beat Arkansas earlier this year, win at 6 seed Alabama, out of conference win at Notre Dame.

Indiana crying about the play-in game is funny.  I think A&M has a legit gripe though.

The explanation is that Michigan was in far too many bracket matrix brackets for him to keep denying that they'd make it.  In the end, these guys all know they can't beat the matrix long term.  So he had to slip them in at the last minute to save face and keep his stats from being even worse.

And most of the brackets in the matrix weren't updated to reflect A&M losing the title game so the same didn't apply for them as regards the matrix.

Having Wyoming as a 10 is completely reasonable given their Q1 and Q2 records and was only off by one seed anyway.  Not a big deal.

I mean he's got you posting about him, thus raising the number of mentions of his name and likely people going to look at his bracket. In a world driven by clicks and views one might even say that he's done exactly the job he's paid to do.

I knew he was a hater after Michigan lost to Indiana he took to Twitter immediately to make a Martelli comment. Idiot gave himself away.

i don't understand why anyone pays attention to any of these dumbasses.

at least (some of) the nfl draft dumbasses are (probably) talking to other reporters and / or team sources - bracketology dumbasses are talking to...who?  not the actual committee that makes the actual, you know, decisions.  99% of it is going directly from their ass to the keyboard.

I do agree with others tho who cares. Only reason I saw Palms comments were I read it on here. Only thing we need to be worried about is can Juwan Coach us to a victory or 2. His team has a real bad habit of getting the brakes beat off of them in 2nd halfs.

How does Jerry Palm still have a job as a bracketologist?

probably the same way meteorologists have jobs when they're only right ~50% of the time

He's been around forever and has built a name for himself.  That's pretty much it.  I think if his last name was Jones he would've been done a long time ago.

He has a job as a bracketologist because people click on his site and look at his brackets.

If you think he is a dope, don't go to his site.
