I know you're joking here but given recent events and a general lack of moral compass from a decent amount of posters, I'd be fine if we never spoke about religion or personal spiritual beliefs on the board. Or at least until OT season when all bets are off and it's much easier to ignore the malaise.

general lack of moral compass …

pretty fucked up your horse is so high you believe your morals are better or more “correct” than others.

when looking at human history, the “morals” at any given time are pretty fluid to assume the ones you hold are right takes an amazing amount of narcissism

I'll agree that 'morals' are largely defined by those thinking about them.  Hell, a lot of mine are pretty fluid on a day-to-day basis!  Nonetheless, there is a generally accepted base that all people largely adhere to.  What I believe you are doing here is conflating 'morals' with political beliefs - which are often the polar opposite of morality and yet easily defended by them.

Political beliefs are the real danger to society, not the 'morality' everyone hides behind because their politics suck so much ass.

Politics is downstream from culture, which is downstream from morals. I think I know what you're getting at, and I tend to agree, but don't assume that someone's politics are because they're secretly a jerk (occasionally this is the case but not often). I would imagine all of us would agree on 99% of moral issues.

The danger to society is that we have it in our genetics from hundreds of thousands of years of selective conditioning to defend our "tribe." And because people see the world through the lens of the internet they think anyone who even slightly disagrees with them is the enemy, without even hearing why that person holds that opinion. It's like a dog that barks at the mailman. But I don't think this is a concept that is new to our civilization. Societies rise and fall and people hate each other. That's just human nature.

Thank you for attending my TedX talk.

As a former Hope football player, I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, now the great rivalry can extend to the gridiron. On the other, now I can no longer make fun of them for not having football like a real school.

I remember seeing some "Calvin College Football Team - Undefeated since 1875" t-shirts when I attended. They kept talking about starting football  ~2010, and I think at some point a couple helmets were made.

I'm surprised it's materializing now; Calvin is a shrinking school with no football history and no alumni or donor base to demand the sport. Given what we now know about CTE, this is an unusual decision. Perhaps they hope it will boost school pride and enrollment.

I have no positive things to say about Calvin. Look elsewhere, high school players.

Here is the deal: Football at these small schools is increasingly a scam-to boost enrollment. They give a kid a $1000 scholarship to play football and smile all the way to the bank with the tuition and room and board fees-which at Calvin and many of these small private colleges is around $50,000 a year.

Within a 25 mile radius of us out here in quite rural Kansas there are four small colleges with enrollments of 500 or less and 100+ of those enrollees are on football "scholarships". This revenue is critical to them being able to keep the doors open but...I disagree that the ends justify the means.

Also a record discount rate. Increasing expenses while decreasing revenue isn’t a solid business model for Hope.

Read Calvin’s press release. What a load of hooey. This is being done for one reason and one reason only: to attract more male students. It’s an expensive strategy that, I predict, won’t end well.
