OT- Brian Kelly is, always has been, and always will be, a terrible human being

Submitted by FatGuyTouchdown on

In an interview on Sirius XM today, Brian Kelly openly admitted he thinks it was a mistake that DeShone Kizer left early for the NFL Draft. Regardless of how true or untrue his opinion is, I find it disingenuous for someone making millions to criticize someone for deciding not to play for free anymore. Kind of an asshole move to call out a former player in such a way.

I don't mind the honest assessment and in the long run. if he tells his players in meeting rooms that whatever you do...I'm going to be honest about it, I'm ok with that. I do agree it goes a much longer way being open about his players.

Agreed.  Adding to this, even if Kelly needed to issue a public statement there are so many better options, ranging from staying that they "would have loved to have him back at ND for another year" to commenting on his strengths, but not his perceived weaknesses, commenting on areas that he has improved upon, but not his weaknesses.  Each of those approaches, in contrast to a glowing endorsement, likely would have sent the appropriate signal to GMs without Kelly expressly bad mouthing his player.  Also, regardless of whether or not his comments impact draft status or contracts, the public statements probably look bad to current players and prospective draft picks who just listened to their coach shit-talk a former player trying to move on to the next phase of his career.

Do you really think GM's in the NFL trust the analysis of a kids former coach? I think any GM who knows what they are doing would take effusive praise from a former coach with a massive grain of salt and do their own due diligence. 99% of coaches are going to talk up their strengths and downplay their weaknesses .... except this a-hole who threw his player under the bus for some unknown reason.

If a GM needs the "whole truth" from the players old coach to a make an assessment, that person is a terrible GM.

As a player's coach, you are absolutely allowed to feel this way. Heck, once a player is drafted, you can maybe even say it in a classy way, such as, "I am so proud of Player X, and so happy he got drafted in the first round. I really feel he could have used another year in college, but he is a member of the family and I hope he has great success."

BUT, to criticize your own player's decision to leave publicly, and to do it BEFORE the player is drafted - thereby potentially fucking up his draft chances - is about as big a dick as you can be. Seriously, I hope Brian Kelly gets herpes. But, like, really, really bad herpes that breaks out every day and is super itchy...

I really don't understand why anyone would want to play for him. What does he do well exactly? I could understand if ND was awesome and he put tons of people in the NFL, but they have been mediocre at best.

NDNation weighs in.

Another kid thrown under the bus.
Getting away from Kelly is the smartest thing he could have done.
The quote is why Kizer is no longer in college.
The great news is kelly has zero and I mean zero credibility
We, for lack of a more eloquent way to put it, have a guy who is not only terrible at his job but is also a world-class asshole to boot.

Kizer has already left. There is nothing to be said that will get him on the team next year. By openly criticizing, it could potentially cost a young man millions of dollars by falling in the draft. Not to mention, Brian Kelly doesn't exactly have a sterling track record of developing NFL QB's. An extra year would probably hurt, more than help.

Letter's of recommendation can reflect back on the people that write them.

If he is effusive with praise and it turns out to be bullshit GMs are not going to trust the praise he gives out for his future prospects. He gave his honest opinion. If he doesn't he's potentially costing future young men millions of dollars.

Difference, as has been pointed out above, is the timing and private vs public.  If you care about Kizer at all, you don't criticize right before the draft.  Publicly, it's not hard to be positive about Kizer.  Coaches says my say many things privately differently than publicly.  Not hard to take the high road here.

Hey...another dual UM/USC alum on here. Can't imagine there are too many of us. That being said, I have to agree with you that it seems like a pretty fair-minded response to me. He seems to think that Kizer's got the highest ceiling among the QBs coming out this year, but he needs more time to develop than the others. He maybe could have worded it in a bit more subtle manner, but I really don't see the bus tire tracks on this one. Though damn...now I'm defending someone for whom I have a subterranean level of respect. Thanks OP!

No NFL GM is going to draft based solely on Kelly's opinion, and probably not based in ANY part on Kelly's opinion that isn't backed up by lots and lots of game film, combine performance, physicals, interviews and who knows what else.  It's highly unlikely that even Kelly's informed opinion about his playing ability is going to knock Kizer down from what would have been a much higher draft position.

If he were criticizing his character, his work ethic, or other things of that nature, that would be another matter.

It's not in every player's best interests to jump to the NFL if they can come back for another year of college ball, get better, improve their draft stock, and make more money. We know this. Everyone knows this. Brian Kelly probably knows it better than most people. He got asked the question and gave an honest answer.

I don't get the outrage here.

there's no guarantee that he improves his stock next year. Brian Kelly has had 1 quarterback drafted in the past 8 years, despite having numerous blue chips at Notre Dame. No one QB of his from Notre Dame has ever been drafted. Not exactly a strong track record, so where is the trust that Kelly is going to develop him come from?

Pete Carroll did the same thing with Mark Sanchez and he was still drafted 5th overall. Now he might have been right but still something your should ever say about your players.

article? The tweet was from Sirius, saying that Brian Kelly thinks this. In reading the article, he said it way differently than that tweet.

who may I add, was responsible for the death of a student video coordinator 5 years ago, this is an innocuous comment. Also, as much as it pains me to say it, I kind of side with Kelly, color me astonished if DeShone Kizer becomes (the first) functional ND QB in the NFL since Joe Montana.

There is blame to be placed on Kelly for this. He knew this was a dangerous situation and disregarded that fact. If this happened somewhere where the influence wasn't so great, a person in Kelly's position could have been charged with criminally negligent homicide.

Maybe Kizer wouldn't go pro if Kelly wasn't such a douche.

Just a question, who wins more games Spartoons or the Fighting Purple Kelly's
