New data point - JH will (probably) be asked about Michigan job at 49ers presser

Submitted by karpodiem on
Welp, I think we will have a very clear idea of his intentions by this (Sunday) evening. An evasive answer would be a great sign.

I don't think he's the type of guy that would say "I'm not interested in the Michigan job"  - this would reduce any potential leverage in negotiating with Michigan or anyone else.

Your second paragraph contradicts your first paragraph. If he will use the Michigan job as leverage and feign interest by giving an evasive answer, that doesn't tell us much of anything.

... the press did ask at a presser a few days ago, but in a way that sort of let Harbugh evade the Michigan question.

The quesion was asked, JH gave a standard coachspeak answer, the same reporter asked again, and JH just stared into space saying nothing for a few seconds.  Then a different reporter let JH off the hook by asking a question on a different topic.

Sooner or later the press is going to ask again.  The next time the reporters might not be so quick to move on to a different topic.  And if JH again gives a non-responsive coachspeak answer, well... that would be good very news.

It's not leverage for Harbaugh's personal contract.  It's leverage to reduce the amount that his new team would have to give up to get him.  (As Brian mentioned in a front page post recently: the more a new NFL team has to give up to get him, the more difficult it makes it for him to win in that new location.)

The idea that he could leave the NFL entirely reduces the "asking price" the 49ers might have for other NFL organizations trying to get him.   If he walks from the NFL, the 49ers get no draft picks in return.  If he stays in the NFL, there would likele be some sort of compensation to S.F.

I'm looking forward to this and the resulting 40+ board posts regarding his facial expressions, voice tone, shirt and/or pant color he was wearing, random reporter tweets and their thoughts, sources saying this, sources saying that, etc., etc., etc......

So now we have threads that don't themselves link to senseless bullshit, but threads predicting the existence of future threads that link to senseless bullshit.

Isn't CC season just wonderful?

WOW!  You really think he will be asked out the Michigan job?!?!

Maybe he will also be asked his thoughts about the sun going down in the evening and whether he thinks it will come back up in the morning?!?!

We are headed down the same road as the last two coaching searches.  Harbaugh needs to come out and state if he's not coming.  Miles, whether love him or hate him, is out.  So we'll end up with the third or fourth choice again, and if you think I'm being negative, well, if the shoe fits.........

In times like these I wish Mike Barwis would ride in here on a Clydesdale with little hummingbird wings, wearing industrial sized steel-toed boots to just kick all of our asses all the way into next weekend. But that won't happen, so fuckin F5 again.

I agree that evasion could be encouraging response, but it probably means nothing if he ignores the question or makes an outright denial. He has a job to do until at least the end of this month, and probably feels justified in being evasive or lying to the press in order to do it. (See Saban's repeated denials for precedent). I also get the sense from his earlier pressers that he doesn't exactly hold the media in high regard. So in other words, we'll probably know nothing more after the presser than we do now.

My reports are indicating we'll get a new data point in the game - forget post game.  If he scratches his nose he is coming, if he scratches his chin its fuck no to Michigan.

Watch every second, it can happen anytime.

Using my pscyhic precognition skills, I'll paraphrase his answer:

All I'm thinking about right now is the 49er's and getting this team into the playoffs and the Super Bowl...next question.

When this happens I expect to be accepted for my pscyhic abilities and be lauded as the next THE_KNOWLEDGE on this board

1) Totally useless thread and the OP made no sense at all.  Yet all of us degenerates are all still here, aren't we?

2)  Just because it was asked once, doesn't mean it won't be asked again.  The more persistent a press corps can get, the more likely somebody breaks down:

3) That being said, in order for the press corps to go to that length, they have to actually care enough.  It's likely at this point the people in the press conference are very NFL or 49ers focused, not necessarily Michigan focused.  So while the question of where Harbaugh may be next year as a GENERAL matter is certainly an important one to them, I don't think at this point they are so focused on the Michigan option that they will hammer away at him regarding Michigan specifically.  They only have so much time & so many questions to get in.  They aren't going to burn their access to him to create a feeding frenzy about the Michigan option at this point.  Not enough blood in the water.

4)  I personally think that Harbaugh at least cares enough about Michigan to not string us along simply for leverage.  He already has leverage with another 3-4 NFL teams interested in him.  Adding one more potential suitor is not going to substantially boost his leverage at this point, so completely dicking over his alma mater for such a small marginal boost in leverage would not likely make sense.

5)  As a result of this, if he knew for sure his answer was 'no', he should be willing to slam the door shut on the Michigan option publicly at this point.  Therefore, anything evasive indicates he is either coming to Michigan, or is at least still seriously entertaining the idea.

EDIT:  Somebody correctly pointed out above that Harbaugh may not need more leverage for his own contract, but leverage so that any future NFL team he goes to is not hampering themselves too much to obtain him.  I can see this point and so my points #4 and #5 above aren't as strong I suppose.  Still, call it wishful thinking if you want.  I'd like to think that he would not screw over Michigan in that way.  Maybe he'd privately tell Hackett and the search committee he's a no-go, but then ask them to keep it confidential so the NFL teams don't realize that.  If that's the case, then as fans we'd be just in the dark as the other NFL teams at this point.

Harbaugh was real - like I said John seems more probable than Jim because he has won a Super Bowl. But seriously how can you leave the pros after being so close to winning it all. It just seems far fetched especially for someone as ego driven as Jim. The only thing that is now shifting the balance from logic to reality is two fold: 1). He hasn't said no which is the easiest way to diffuse these issues 2). It will cost whatever NFL team goes after him a LOT of picks to get him and the teams who want him can't afford those picks The niners may end up making the decision for us.
