ND vs. Wake Postponed

Submitted by JeepinBen on September 22nd, 2020 at 2:55 PM

Notre Dame has 7 positives and 10-13 players in either isolation or quarantine (not sure how they differentiate, or if they're the same, their statement is confusing). So, that game isn't happening Saturday.

Tough shit for ND. They still have enough players to field a team. Play with who you have or forfeit. Why punish Wake for ND’s inability to stay safe?

I agree, to hell with ND, etc.

However, the issue is that ND does not have daily rapid testing. So, ND has 7 known positives and 13 (ish?) potential exposures on the team as of today. That does not mean that's all the infected people around football. Since there's a chance that those 7 had other contacts on the team (maybe they were outside only and 6 feet apart, etc LOW risk, but not zero risk. ) if I'm WF I don't want anyone from ND near my team.

If I read your comment correctly, it sounds like the ACC does not have a specific testing capability or standard to "create" a "safe" on-field environment for games. Is that accurate? If so I agree with you, Wake Forest should say no way in hell are we playing ND and if the game is not able to be rescheduled, then I think it would be fair to make ND forfeit.

That was my immediate reaction too.  So now, if our starting roster isn't quite what we'd like it to be, we get to take our ball and stay home.  I presume ND has 85 scholarship players just like every other program.  They agreed to play in the ACC for this season.  Either show up or forfeit.

I'm too lazy to look, but do these teams (ACC) have byes built into their schedules? I find it hard to believe these game will be made up. This was always the worry in trying to play this season. What's the over/under for cancelled B1G games?

Daily testing starts Sept 30 in the B1G.  ND's testing rate would be considered a "red" condition in the B1G and require practice / competition to be shutdown for a week and then re-testing to occur below the "red" level before resumption.

There will likely be B1G teams that don't make the Sept 30 first-time test hurdle rates.  If that happens in large numbers, the start of the B1G season goes back into doubt given lack of camp prep time for those getting shutdown.

Not to nitpick but Coach Dale actually had a healthy Ray on the bench but wouldn’t put him in because he wasn’t being a team player.  The 4 players he did play he felt were abiding by his code. And that not only sent a message to his squad that he wasn’t taking any shit but it also impressed a half schnockered Shooter who was in the stands that night and felt a rare twinge of inspiration in his cynical heart.

Man, these reckless schools are making the B10 look smarter every day!  Screw ND since they're one of the main reasons that most of these schools are playing at all.

Obviously you need to make sure you have enough testing coverage to ensure you've isolated the risk of spread (i.e. what the B10 is doing).  But I tend to agree - if you have more than 65 scholarship players available, you have to play or you have to forfeit.

Could be wrong but I assume quarantine means testing positive and isolation means contact tracing shows you were exposed to a high degree.    May be the other way around, but whatever.

I imagine ND is not the first program that has had or will have this type of outbreak but I hope other schools will act with the same integrity in protecting players (even though I doubt all will).

I second this motion.  You have 125 guys on the roster, which is way more than enough to play a game.  By these numbers, they should still have 100 or so ready to go, which is still more than you can take on the road anyway.  Must be a prominent player that tested positive - I wouldn't book it, but maybe a strong possibility?

BTW all the "F*** Notre Dame!' posts are fun, but this is really a college football problem, not a Notre Dame problem.  If too many games have to be cancelled, the season will obviously suffer, no matter who is cancelling.

This is what happens when you don't have proper procedures in place like the Big Ten does to isolate positive cases before they become contagious to avoid major team exposure.  Thank goodness we whooped their asses last season to leave that bitter taste in their mouths for the next 13 years
