lol, BS
December 16th, 2020 at 5:38 PM ^
You think we won’t hire any defensive coaches by February?
December 16th, 2020 at 5:42 PM ^
Maybe we can get Greg Mattison for the d line...
December 16th, 2020 at 5:52 PM ^
Won't be holding my breath but obviously this would be ideal.
December 16th, 2020 at 7:38 PM ^
Fuck him.
December 16th, 2020 at 8:59 PM ^
What if the only reason he left was he knew Chris Partridge was mishandling recruiting?
December 16th, 2020 at 6:06 PM ^
He went to OSU to become a D-Coordinator again after Harbaugh demoted him. Highly doubt he'll take a demotion back to the coaching regime that demoted him.
December 16th, 2020 at 7:25 PM ^
I meant it as a joke! If only Washington were a defensive back coach!
December 17th, 2020 at 1:42 PM ^
If he was bugged about that... he didn't have to stay. Staying then bolting for our biggest rival is still a dick move.
December 16th, 2020 at 5:50 PM ^
The tweet isn't referring to coaching positions, it's DT and CB and he's saying "it will play out better than you know at [DT and CB] and other positions".
There are still guys on the board. They got Benny to wait on signing. So we'll see. I'm sure he does expect to have a defensive coaching staff in place and perhaps thinks the new staff will help.
December 16th, 2020 at 7:03 PM ^
Highly doubt that he would say, "Damn, we're fucked", even if true.
December 16th, 2020 at 7:06 PM ^
Benny is going Blue. I’ll bet everyone in this thread a steak dinner Benny signs with Michigan.
December 16th, 2020 at 7:28 PM ^
Steak from a cow or tube steak?
December 17th, 2020 at 7:10 AM ^
Both -- bovine tube steak.
December 16th, 2020 at 7:41 PM ^
That would be awesome, and hopefully a sign the coaches are circling the wagons and it's working. It will always be pretty easy to sell Michigan. What they need to sell is how players can be successful under this coaching administration's program. That has been a tougher sell and a terrible year this year is making it harder.
If however they start making some hay on the recruiting trail that might be a moderate indicator that the coaches are pushing something that recruits like and are buying into.
One can hope.
December 17th, 2020 at 12:43 PM ^
We must be negotiating with a bag man.
December 16th, 2020 at 6:57 PM ^
Yes I think we will, but this influx of talented kids coming in February is pretty far-fetched in my opinion. He has to sell hope(hopefully he’s one of the people to get canned) because swinging and missing on DT & CB are not going to go over well.
December 16th, 2020 at 8:05 PM ^
Dudek will end up being the biggest douche and lose all credibility if nothing big happens.
December 16th, 2020 at 9:59 PM ^
Every day until Dudek is replaced is another day we fall behind.
December 16th, 2020 at 5:38 PM ^
The fact that these two positions groups are in such a rocky place going into year 7, for which Michigan will have to rely on grad transfers, is beyond pathetic.
December 16th, 2020 at 5:44 PM ^
Am I the only one far more concerned about LB ? The DL has a few guys coming up like Hinton and Welschof.......figure mcGrone is leaving soon, and we are starting a walk on at MLB... and Barrett is too small, and Ross, although tough and quick, is too small too. And it seems nobody makes mention of this. We might have these tweener safety/LB hybrids but theyre just too small for the Big Ten and assuming Brown is gone, where is the beef ?
December 16th, 2020 at 5:47 PM ^
Depth at LB is somewhat concerning, but the 2020 class had 4-star Kalel Mullings and 3-star Nikhai Hill-Green, both of whom will have now had a full year in the program. I do wish they would have seen some PT this year, but they are both potential two-deep players next fall.
Hopefully there’s some better coaching on the defensive side of the ball next year and McGrone decides he needs another year of tape for NFL teams.
December 16th, 2020 at 6:59 PM ^
That's the frustration. The defense was awful as everyone noticed. Why not give these true freshmen and RS freshmen a little playing time? It is really difficult to understand what they are doing. With a defense this bad, every player should have gotten game time to see what is there. Some guys might not look great in practice, but just make plays. Also, it would energize the whole roster seeing that everyone has a chance (not just the favorites).
December 16th, 2020 at 5:48 PM ^
I think the problem is the d-line isn’t preventing the o-line from getting to the second level. The linebackers never have a chance. The d-line is too damn porous.
December 16th, 2020 at 6:02 PM ^
I have to disagree to an extent here. The DL held up pretty well against the run this year (didn't get pressure agains the pass but you're talking about being porous), per UFRs. The run problems seemed most often LBs getting edged, LBs not filling proper gaps and safeties not knowing what to do.
December 16th, 2020 at 6:09 PM ^
Yes, that was one of the strange dynamics of the season. Whatever flaws we'd seen in Don Brown's defense before, we hadn't seen the LBs and safeties play like that. No doubt lacking a safeties coach hurt the cause.
December 16th, 2020 at 6:50 PM ^
Am I the only one far more concerned about LB ?
Yes and no. Yes because we're seeing a 4-star in year #3 (Josh Ross) look pretty lost. No, because Wisconsin is playing a true freshman (Nick Herbig #143) and a true sophomore (Leo Chenal #639) and they are doing just fine. There's no reason that can't be true freshman Junior Colson (#95) and true sophomore Kalel Mullings (#152) next year. Plus we still have 4-star sophomores Jaylen Harrell (#294), Osman Savage (#300), junior Anthony Solomon (#223), seniors Cam McGrone if back (#118), BVS (#624), and Michael Barrett (#751), and RS Senior Josh Ross (#211). That doesn't even mention second year players Nikhai Hill-Green, Will Mohan, Cornell Wheeler or true freshman Jaydon Hood or Tyler McLaurin. That's a lot of bodies.
December 16th, 2020 at 6:59 PM ^
I thought Savage transferred already.
December 16th, 2020 at 6:05 PM ^
It is what it is. Lamenting does nothing. Time to move on and expect them to fix it .
December 16th, 2020 at 6:30 PM ^
People keep conflating DT and CB as having the same issues. DT lacks bodies; CB has a lot of them but they're just young. Michigan has taken quite a few corners the past couple of classes (this class only having one is not typical), but they are just young. Some may not work out but there are bodies there to work with.
December 16th, 2020 at 7:00 PM ^
my question is why didn't all of these young guys get a little playing time?
December 16th, 2020 at 10:01 PM ^
They did get some playing time. Green and Gray were the two starters, but Jalen Perry played in a couple of games, as did Turner. I don't believe any of the true freshmen played but that's somewhat understandable given how brevity of the season and how Michigan was never really in a lot of games where it made sense to let these guys see the field (Michigan was really only blown out in the Wisconsin game this year; all the rest were reasonably competitive).
I'm not saying CB isn't a position where Michigan needs to improve, only that they do have players there that you assume will mature into competent starters. Compare that to DT, where they have a couple of guys but are also trying to convert other types of players (SDEs, Ben Mason, etc.) into competent players.
December 16th, 2020 at 6:37 PM ^
Lol. What’s wrong Toby? Signing day wasn’t the big flop you hoped for so you could bash Ward and Harbaugh on how they f’d the program up by delaying an extension!?
December 16th, 2020 at 6:45 PM ^
Username checks out
December 16th, 2020 at 7:55 PM ^
It wasn’t a complete flop, but losing two 4 stars on defense isn’t exactly great. Adding Donovan was welcome news. It was probably as good as could be expected given the horrendous state of the program. But holding onto most of the kids we ALREADY had committed isn’t exactly cause for celebration.
December 16th, 2020 at 8:09 PM ^
Or I am well aware that the programs problems run deeper than simply signing 4.5* QBs and RBs to mitigate below standard recruiting and program decisions. Michigan still doesn't have Defensive Tackles, they still don't have Corners that can run, and Linebacker will be a huge gap in 2022.
Sorry I don't ejaculate over signing day and recruiting rankings, which have not translated into championships.
December 16th, 2020 at 10:12 PM ^
Haha it's pretty funny at this point. This place gets pumped about classes and how we will score 50+ every game next season and then the offense is mediocre every year. It's actually getting quite impressive.
December 16th, 2020 at 5:38 PM ^
Now we need to shore up the defensive line and cornerback position and develop these guys.
Let’s just say this better be right or else we’re screwed.
December 16th, 2020 at 5:39 PM ^
Guess he believes our new defensive coaching staff will be able to bring over some players and/or hit the transfer portal successfully.
Need some DT's and CB's
December 16th, 2020 at 5:40 PM ^
With all due respect to Dudek because I don't know what goes into being a recruiting coordinator, he's gotten called out by 247 Recruiting Staff for being disorganized. So I'll believe it when I see it.
Goes without saying but they need Jaden McBurrows tonight, Jaydon Hood, Ceyair Wright, George Rooks, and somehow need to flip Rayshaun Benny back...
December 16th, 2020 at 5:42 PM ^
Totally agree. I would have no faith..given I am a Michigan fan after all and dong punches are the norm, but after holding onto Worthy and pulling in Edwards today, I will withhold my usual pessimism.
December 16th, 2020 at 5:45 PM ^
I don't remember if it was Dudek specifically but Rivals was reporting the same thing maybe a year or two into Harbaugh's tenure. Very disorganized, recruits not getting calls when they were supposed to, other follow-ups not being done, etc. Not a lack of enthusiasm, just not a streamlined operation and too many things falling through the cracks.
I ignored it at the time because we were doing well. Now it makes sense.
December 16th, 2020 at 5:49 PM ^
Recruiting holes started showing up in classes starting in 2017. Dudek took over in 2017. OSU literally laughs at our recruiting structure. So, that, uh, says something about something, as our Lord and Savior Brian Cook says.
December 16th, 2020 at 8:55 PM ^
I’m all for moving on from Dudek.
December 16th, 2020 at 6:00 PM ^
" he's gotten called out by 247 Recruiting Staff for being disorganized "
Wow, how damning !
Big /s btw
December 16th, 2020 at 6:08 PM ^
Yeah, like that "thanks for attending our BBQ" fiasco with A Solomon.
December 16th, 2020 at 6:54 PM ^
Harbaugh should hire the 247 recruiting Staff
December 16th, 2020 at 5:41 PM ^
Wishful thinking but it doesn’t look like Tywone Malone has committed/signed with Ole Miss just yet. He was thought to be heavily considering MI when Partridge was here. It would be great to get CP back in some capacity.
December 16th, 2020 at 5:45 PM ^
But Partridge isn't here... so it is more likely he is following Partridge, not us. I'm annoyed about losing Shepard to Cinci.
December 16th, 2020 at 5:48 PM ^
Which is why I said it would be great to get Chris Partridge back in some capacity...
