Makeup of MBB Roster for 2022-23

Submitted by San Diego Mick on March 20th, 2022 at 2:21 PM

Hello guys, lots of interesting discussion on the board regarding player comparisons and pro potential. Yesterday I was thinking about what next year's squad would look like depending on whom comes back or leaves.

PG - Frankie Collins 6'1" & Dug McDaniel 5'11"

SG - Kobe Bufkin 6'4"

Wing & Forwards - T Will, Jace & Jett Howard, Isaiah Barnes, Gregg Glenn all 6'7" & Will Tschetter is 6'8"

C - Tarris Reed 6'10"

Now assuming Hunter, Diabate & Houstan leave, this would leave 10 Scholarship players and only one big guy in Reed, as a frosh no less so you never really know how good he'll be. I really think they should all comeback to improve their games even more but guys make poor decisions too soon to get that money and not consider that they might make more with more seasoning. The G-League gets no pub, if they left and somehow made it on an NBA roster they'd probably be buried deep on the bench.

If they comeback, our height and roster distribution would be in good shape but I have a feeling they'll be too anxious to try the pros which would leave us with the initial 10 guys I listed. In this case we would need at least another big and a some sort of good shooting combo guard, preferably in the 6'3" - 6'5" range if available. I'd prefer transfer portal or grad transfers for these 2 positions as our roster will be loaded with mostly freshmen, RS Frosh, Sophs and 2 juniors so some experience would be nice.

I just wonder how Juwan will handle this situation and what strategy he will take, I thought it would be a fun board discussion and wanted to know what everyone thinks and what your preferences are.

Premature but fun to consider.

As a fan I, too, am hoping for Moussa and Caleb to return. Michigan will need to rescue a "backup big" and "just a shooter" from the portal.

I believe one of the wings (Jett) can be a two. Those, to-be, sophomores we haven't seen will be better. TWill can start or be the 6th man.

Next year's group will be more athletic than this year's. I think Caleb, critics not withstanding, is very close-to being a star He and Moussa have made nice steady progress/improvement...need natural, physical maturity more than anything.

I don't see Moussa and Houstan going pro.  They are currently grading out at 2nd round and Juwan and the staff have had a huge impact on Hunter's development.

Moussa and Houstan have so much more to learn.  They are not remotely dominant a la Kennedy Chandler.

They each have the potential to be top 15 players in the following year's draft.  Just my opinion.  Curious what others think.

I agree with you, they could get so much from the experience of another year in Ann Arbor, especially Houstan. If it's all about the Benjamins, go pro, but if it isn't, they would really benefit themselves coming back. Heck, even if it was about the Benjamins coming back might be the right move if they improve that much.

It's like fast food when you're hungry. Instead of driving a few more miles and going to a restaurant that serves good quality food, too often we drive by fast food restaurants, it smells good, and there's a quick drive through. I hope these guys don't give in to that for a few Benjamins, when many more Benjamins are on the table

Caleb is a set shooter that cant shoot set shots. The NBA loves over reaching for UM players but why dont they just take the 70-80 players that can do way more than that and let these guys grow. Somehow Lil Bow Wow will still be in orange next season and we will lose players that are G league bound.

Top??? He's a raw prospect, and will develop we hope, but even so, top 5 is a lot to expect.  With a big jump he could be an end of lottery type pick, first rounder.

This is only partly based on his play. What skills do you see translating even with development? Low post has some promise. Solid shot blocker but defense needs work.

All this to say, love the guy but top 5 would take an incredible jump

PG: Collins & McDaniel - PG looks set and they likely don't need to add a PG in the portal this year.

SG: Bufkin, ? - This is where I think Michigan needs to find a transfer so I agree a guy in the 6'3 to 6'5 range who can guard bigger guards and hit jump shots will be important to find. Replacing Eli Brooks is a big ask. Bufkin has shown some flashes of scoring talent but has had issues on defense and will need to take a big step forward to be a 30 minute-per-game guy on a good team. More likely, they find a starter here who can play 20-30 minutes and split time with Bufkin while he keeps developing on both ends.

SF: Houstan, Jett Howard, Barnes, Jace Howard - I do not think Houstan will go to the nba. I don't think he'd be drafted if he left and any draft hype is lingering from preseason rankings rather than up-to-date scouting. I expect Jett Howard to earn minutes right away as a freshman.

PF: Diabate (?), Williams, Tschetter, Glenn - If Diabate departs they will put some talented guys in a blender and see if they can develop a stud. Could add a transfer but they at least have a floor with TWill who will give you tough minutes as an undersized 4 and developing as a floor spreading player.

C: Dickinson (?), Reed - If Dickinson and Diabate both return then Juwan will not need to add a transfer big. If one or both leave then the C position gets thin quickly.

To me, SG is the biggest need, followed by potentially C. They have enough big wings but not many of the G/F variety.

Houstan might have a future in the nba, but he has to at least show he can create his own shot before he can think about going to the G-league let alone the NBA.  There are only so many spots teams can use for potential, and he hasn't shown enough yet.  He can't even hit the open 3 consistently.  He put up a zero against UT and OSU, 2 teams with NBA caliber talent.

Houstan had a bagel yesterday. A guy who's not big, strong or particularly athletic and doesn't score a point in 32 minutes has no business thinking about going pro. Spectacularly bad advice/decision if he does.

While still wildly inconsistent, he's been steadily improving, and has a chance to become an all-B1G level player next year.

I think Moussa would also benefit greatly from another year of Howard's coaching/experience. He's still super raw, and no way could he make an NBA roster.

Hunter, OTOH, has a pretty well-developed post game (at least offensively), and his vastly improved outside shooting could well make him a legit NBA backup despite defensive limitations. He's also a legit 7 footer, pretty strong, and has proven he can compete against NBA-sized dudes.

Seems clear to me that Houstan and Diabate should stay, Dickinson's probably as ready as he's gonna be.

I've certainly been wrong about this sort of decision for kids before, but that's my take.

Hunter is gone because there is nothing left to prove at this level. He is only getting older. He will be a fringe G league or Europe player.  See poor man Garza

Diabete there are a bevy of fast twitch jumpy guys drafted on potential. See Sekou to pistons. There are 30 of these a year. 4 will hit the rest will be bottom 3 of a roster or out of bball in 3 yrs

Houstan isn't NBA ready but some team will take him early 2nd round and hope he is not just a shooter and stash him for 2 yrs.  He does little but stand at the 3 pt line. Those guys are called 3 and D and NBA will draft potential.

We will be young next yr.

In old days the latter 2 stay a yr and grow and try to be mid first round.  In today world you go when your agent tells you one NBA team wants you late first.  So you go and laugh to the bank.  NIL.at Michigan lol vs a 2nd round contract give me a break.

I don’t know what games you have been watching but there is no way Caleb is one and done. He’s lucky to start on a very mediocre Mich team.

C: Transfer #1

PF: Williams

SF: Houston

SG: Bufkin or Je. Howard

PG: Collins

----------

C: Reed

PF: Transfer #2

SF: Barnes

SG: Je. Howard or Bufkin

PG: McDaniel

----------

C: n/a

PF: Glenn or Tschetter

SF: Ja. Howard

SG: Walk-on

PGWalk-on

...this would by 13 scholarship players and 2 walk-ons. Transfer #2 could be another guard since Barnes might be able to give you stretch 4 minutes like Williams does now and Jett Howard can easily play the 3.

This is all silly...

Houston and Diabate did practically nothing all season to interest any NBA scouts.  Both will return next season.

Dickinson is gone. His height and soft hands make him a great backup-5. If he can put on some muscle and learn how to use it he could be an NBA starter for a few seasons.

...and yes, one can talk about next season while still focusing on the current season.   The ability to contemplate future situations while staying in the present is one the many reasons we left the trees roughly two million years ago.

A time honored MGo tradition, definitively claiming [insert player] is not ready for the NBA followed by that player declaring and getting drafted.
