Schools open in Mississippi and 1 week later teacher gets Covid and dies. Sadly, this is still the tip of the iceberg. But yeah...Let's keep holding out hope for college football.

Good for the MAC for doing the right thing.

If this is the story, the teacher was never in the classroom.   More relevant to this thread is the fact that he was an assistant football coach who may have infected or been infected through that, but that seems like significant conjecture at this pont.

There is a connection. The virus is spread in human to human contact, such as at school. No, the teacher didn't get it at school. Yes, people can and will get it at school, and some of them will die. The fact that the teacher died in that particular school district probably makes them second guess reopening of schools. It puts the worst case consequences directly in their faces.

I went to see my doctor for my annual physical yesterday. (I chose him because he played in the MMB. It was just a bonus that he studied at Hopkins.) So of course we talked about Covid. He ordered an anti-body test for me as part of all the other blood work. They drew five separate vials of blood. Anyway, he told me he had to write a letter for a 67 year old teacher so she could be excused from on-site instruction. At the end of the letter, he wrote that the administrator forcing her to get a doctor’s note just doesn’t understand the situation and should quit. One more thing, he said if we all wore masks this would be gone in 30 days.

Hope your blood work turns out fine. There are very differing medical opinions on masks and how to minimize COVID so you can follow whom ever you trust the most. I wish it was as simple as wearing masks for 30 days would solve this problem. Think of how wonderful that would be-I mean this in a positive way.

Yeah, there aren’t really differing opinions among leading experts about masks. Check any leading health organization or epidemiologist. They will tell you masks and distancing are by far the most effective measures. The only opposing opinions come from fringe types of the sort that appear on Fox News. They find mask deniers the way the find climate change deniers. They find one fringe dissenter and amplify his message, as they did with that doctor who touted that bogus covid “cure.” Or they find one scientist who disputes that climate change exists and say, “See, there’s no consensus.” Accept science. Wear a fucking mask.

Except numerous countries don't wear masks and their top doctors and health advisors scoff at their use so there are it's some debate among leading doctors nationally. Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Switzerland and think South Korea.

l bet I've listened to 20 different doctors, epidemiologists, infectious disease experts explain it from all over world and you can watch or read this all over the place so stop with the fox news thing. Not even against masks but saying everyone has concluded it that is not true. Most importantly though saying stops everything and you're completely safe is total baloney. If it were only that simple

30 days of masks totally solving the problem seems wildly optimistic because it assumes a level of compliance that is unrealistic.   As part of a larger strategy to reduce caseload to a point where testing and contact tracing could keep cases manageable, that starts to seem much more realistic.

I don’t think you and that doctor disagree. The way I interpreted the comment was a a hypothetical - if we were to have been living in an educated, caring, competent society...

Just a sad state of affairs that something as simple as masking up to save college football (oh, and, you know, thousands of lives) is too complicated for America.

If you are right, this is a communication challenge.   My point is that, making statements about unrealistic, idealized solutions is unlikely to get us closer to a solution.  Telling people 30 days of mask wearing will solve the problem isn’t credible.  People know that and thus saying it does nothing to move us to a real solution

We all get your point. You are likely missing the point of the doc’s comment.

It is not some doctor’s job to come up with the solution to Covid-19. Nor is it any poster’s from this board.

We have every right to complain about the catastrophic failure of Americans’ ability to not be utter morons.* If you want to claim that this makes us part of the problem because we’re not part of the solution, go ahead. It seems nobody’s buying that. (But part of any solution to the problem is for more people to put on a goddamn mask.)

*yes, not all Americans. Just too many of us.

spot on Putin..... my sources in the Empire are telling me that harvesting the bacterial flora from underneath the toenails of the Ewok species might be the golden ticket out of this thing.  Studies are showing these adorable creatures have a built in resistance to the Covid.....and, unrelated,  in a certain region of the Redwood forest you can find many excellent defensive tackles.

plus 1 for Russia!

That’s not how masks work.  They keep you from spreading it to others.  Why this is so hard to grasp I will never understand.  It’s still not an argument against wearing the damn things(I have no idea why people won’t freaking do it) but lets at least be honest about what masks will actually do.

No there are not. Masks work, it is 100% proven and accepted scientific fact. But not if idiots like you delude other ignorant people into thinking they don't work. Everyone has to participate, or they don't work. You probably really know that deep down, but your political fuckery prevents you from acknowledging such.

The doctor is an idiot if he thinks everyone wearing a mask for 30 days would stop the virus. It’s patently absurd. There are so many factors that go into viral spread. For one thing, it assumes everyone would wear them perfectly correctly, never get them soiled or, if they do, immediately change them. It assumes no one will touch or grab the mask then touch their eyes. It assumes you’ll never eat in the presence of other people, or adjust the mask in any way while in another’s presence.

It would help, yes. It wouldn’t get rid of it.

btw, a story you don’t hear about any more for some STRANGE reason. Sweden has very quietly achieved ZERO deaths per day. They have only a couple hundred cases per day now. Google updates on Sweden and you’ll see the most recent update on them is about three weeks ago.

Since wearing masks can’t be 100% should we just not wear them? Making these types of arguments is not enlightened or being realistic. It’s arguing for the sake of arguing which gets nowhere. This gets to the heart of our societal divide. People argue for the sake of arguing instead of simply doing the right thing for others.
