Joaquin Phoenix is kind of a messed up guy. So I guess he's the perfect one to play Joker. He's a real life joker.
"Messed up" is relative. I agree he's definitely perfect for Joker. Regardless of what quirks he might have, the guy is an incredible actor.
I think escapism is something he's spent his life doing. So acting is second nature.
He's a a hair-lipped reminder of his brother's greatness.
Fuck You(!!!) Mad Hatter and your use of that term. As a proud father of a beautiful child born with a cleft lip, I'd elbow you in the face as hard as I could if you used that term in my presence. Who do you think you are writing crap like that? I think you're a pathetic coward that hides behind internet anonymity and uses slurs.
I dare you to post a real picture of your face so we all can comment on your looks. Mods, this is BS if this goes unchecked.
Mandatory "well that escalated quickly."

(Note: I'm not excusing TMH's behavior, but rather pointing out where he stole that sentiment.)
+1 for Informative.
TMH isn't just a piece of morally-bankrupt maggot shit. He apparently also plagiarizes unfunny comedy bits from professionals and tries to pass it off as his own. Scumbag and a fraud.
It is also possible that (as evidenced by his misspelling of the outdated and derogatory term) that he didn’t know that term was considered offensive.
Ignorance is no excuse, which for this loser, is going to be a lifelong problem.
What is the point of an origin movie if all they plan to do is constantly chage origins over and over?
Considering that they’re giving it a Scorsese-esque vibe rather than a superhero vibe, I would say this is probably going to be more of a one-off alternate version, as opposed to a part of a shared universe. I could be wrong, but that’s how it looks/feels.
Exactly. This one looks like it's meant for more of a serious film audience, not the people who find the mass of low IQ dreck that is the superhero movie genre compelling.
Heath Ledger would have been amazing in this role.
IMO he played the best Joker role ever. He made that movie so much better.
I never really thought of it that way and it's not that there's no one else that could have done a good job as joker, but outside of him that movie really kinda sucked.
Hmm. I don't think any of those movies came close to "sucking." I'm not a huge fan of the genre, but I think that Batman Begins and The Dark Knight may arguably be the two best super-hero movies ever made.
That's probably true, but goddamn is that a low bar to clear.
I completely agree with this take. My original comment wasn't to insinuate that the movie would have sucked if Heath Ledger would not have been the Joker but more that he did such an amazing job at that role that I thought the movie could not have been better. I would watch all the Batman movies again but the Dark Knight is one that I have watched more than the others.
Heath Ledger was great as his version of the Joker, but this take on the character is a better fit for Phoenix, IMO. Joaquin Phoenix is great at getting people to feel sorry for him.
Except for when he's getting coffee at Dunkin'
Ah, but there's the problem.....the character of Joker is never supposed to have sympathy, and we're never supposed to know his true origin. Ledger nailed the role by constantly telling different versions of how he got his scars. Nobody ever know who Joker really was, where he came from...he was just pure evil.
I watched the trailer, and while Phoenix's acting looks to be outstanding, he's humanizing a character that was never written to be human. He's always been written to be the embodiment of insanity and evil. The clown prince of chaos. He's not supposed to have sympathy. That's my only problem with the concept of the movie.
This is probably the biggest criticism of the film as it stands right now. A linear origin story really takes away the mystique of the Joker and makes him a much less compelling character.
What would be incredible is if they're actually pulling a bait-and-switch on us. If the scenes of him with his mom and whatnot are actually just schizophrenic episodes of a madman slowly realizing his true psychoticness and the details of his past actually remain shrouded.
Though his murky or unknown origins have now become the accepted take, Joker does indeed have a general origin story (with variations), that of being a criminal, often but not always named Red Hood, who falls into a vat of chemicals, causing his transformation.
The comic The Killing Joke has a particularly memorable take, framing the Joker as a failed comedian who turns to crime, as Red Hood, to support his pregnant wife, before falling into chemicals.
Personally, the unknown is always more scary, and l prefer that take on Joker’s origin, but some of the origins for him that exist do paint him sympathetically and are pretty damn good.
I love how you just come here with comic book knowledge and let us know the Joker did have a sympathetic origin story. Especially since someone else had a whole thing about the joker isn’t meant to have known origins.
He's dead right? Keith Jackson too?
Keith Jackson agrees.
As someone who's not much of a comic book movie fan, this looks really good. In part because it doesn't look like a normal superhero movie.
Well it’s a villain movie so...?
Yeah, it’s interesting what they can do with superheroes (or villains) in a non-superhero movie.
I felt that way about Logan as well. If you haven’t seen it, it’s definitely a gritty western with a dash of noir that just happens to have superheroes in it. Really good movie.
That's true. That was a pretty good one. Deadpool was great but just because I thought it was hilarious. Infinity War was actually pretty good because Thanos was surprisingly complex and well-acted.
I clicked wondering if Novak Djokovic had squandered all his wealth ...
DC ditched the Jared Leto Joker so fast, it’s like they don’t want us to know he existed.
DC has only succeeded in their EU with Aquaman and Wonder Woman. They’ve really botched Batman and Superman; the quick follow up to the Nolan trilogy was a gamble that has so far failed.
I was skeptical when I heard of a Joker standalone film because the Joker doesn’t have much of an origin backstory, but they enlisted the best guy to get his storyline out there and hopefully gets this extended universe back on track.
Sadly, I'm not so certain the Leto Joker is gone completely. Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn movie is still happening.
She was fun to watch, but I don't see how Margot Robbie's Harley can exist in the same universe as Phoenix's joker. DC better decide which direction they're going to go and just stick with it.
DC is going to do stand-alone movies that are not part of the Shared Universe movies. For the purposes of shared universe movies, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Justice League, this movie simply will not exist.
I've never understood the hate for the Leto version. I get that Suicide Squad wasn't great, but Leto's Joker seemed like the real heir to the GOAT Joker, Jack Nicholson.
That's what is weird about this. They haven't scrapped the Jared Leto joker. He is shooting his own stand alone joker movie, and rumors of a second suicide squad.
This is supposed to be a one time origin story movie for this version of the joker.
I'm excited for this. I think Joaquin is one of the best actors out right now. If you haven't seen them, I'd recommend 'You Were Never Really Here' and 'The Sisters Brothers' for more recent examples. I like the more intimate indie approach to this as a look into a fractured mind as opposed to a good vs. bad beat em up movie but I guess that is still TBD and the director comes from a mostly comedy background.
Fun fact also, I'm pretty sure that little kid he makes smile is a young Bruce Wayne and his name Arthur Fleck (A Fleck) is a pretty funny coincidence.
My least favorite part of the movie. Just ditch the fan service for once.
The age difference is fucking weird too.
Other than that it really does seem like Joaquin’s joker could morph into something like Heaths down the road. They even kind of look the same. I know Phoenix and Ledger were really good friends, so I’m sure there’s homage there
That’s a horrible fan service cameo.
The age difference alone makes it stupid.
So … “Taxi Driver” with face paint?
Yeah, I thought of Travis Bickle too, but I was intrigued by the trailer all the same. Phoenix is a pretty good choice for this, I think.
Anyone remember Joaquin in 'Signs' back in the day? Dude isn't aging well...
Helluva actor, though, but that movie looks dark.
17 years will age most anyone.
Not Paul Rudd
Yes, and by saying "back in the day" you are acknowledging it was a different time, a long time ago
