Iowa-Indiana postponed due to metal from ceiling falling at Assembly Hall
Just heard it on the radio and it's all over the twitter.
Luckily nobody was hurt.
Good thing it happened now instead of during the game. The metal fell from the ceiling down to the stands.

But seriously, very glad no one was hurt. That would've sucked.

And I thought the season caving in on Indiana was just a metaphor!

I'm just sayin
February 19th, 2014 at 6:10 PM ^
IU doesn't have an engineering program.
February 18th, 2014 at 4:22 PM ^
Probably Jeff Meyer's fault.

better condemn the entire damn basketball program.
Sound good to everyone else?

...Disassembly Hall?

Assembly Fail.
February 18th, 2014 at 7:20 PM ^
we had I-beams falling down all the time, sometimes 18-20 ft long. Did we stop a basketball game, no! After we were done, we then walked back home up the damn hill in the snow that was up to our armpits and we liked it!
February 18th, 2014 at 4:25 PM ^
Foul on Iowa! Oh wait, they aren't playing? Technical on Iowa!
February 18th, 2014 at 7:23 PM ^
It could have clobbered an Iowa player on his way to the rim and the refs still would not have called anything on Indiana. Probably would have called a charge.

Reminds me of the only NBA game I ever "went to;" in college we went to the Palace for a Pistons v. Bulletts game (for you young kids, that's what the Wizards were called before D.C. changed the name because it was the murder capital of the USA)
Anyway, we get to the Palace and the game was cancelled due to the court being wet from some weather/humidity issue. Very odd reason for a basketball game to be cancelled.. like falling metal.
Ok, I'm going back to work now...
February 18th, 2014 at 4:33 PM ^
caused by the ice under the floor from when the vipers were still around and playing at the palace???
February 18th, 2014 at 4:35 PM ^
Holy shit, I was at that non-game! I must be younger than you, because I remember going when I was more middle-school aged, maybe younger (don't remember exactly how old I was). It was a problem with the Vipers having played hockey there or something, as I recall. The court was all wet because water kept condensing on it.
Weird...
February 18th, 2014 at 5:11 PM ^
Considering I was drinking from a keg on a bus that was taking us to the game.... I'm going to assume that you and GOBLUE4VR are correct. Vipers fault.
And I am old... it was my Soph or Jr. year at UM (1995 or so)
February 18th, 2014 at 5:18 PM ^
That sounds like it'd be around the right time.
It sounds like you never went back. I remember we got some free tickets to another game, which must have been the rescheduled Bullets game, because I remember being excited to see Webber play.

I know Assembly Hall isn't that large, but if the engineers need to determine why the piece failed and need to inspect every beam/girder in the building before allowing a game to be played there, I can't see this one being made up this week.
February 18th, 2014 at 8:15 PM ^
is a very large building actually. It holds 17,472. Very high ceiling, long spans of girders. For being built in 1971 it still looks fantastic.

one of worst places to "watch" a game. If your seat is row 30 or higher, its not a good view. If you are upper deck .... fagettaboutit. The place is incredibly loud though and the NCAA banners start to swing as the crowd gets into the game. Haven't been there for along time - but when Knight was there ( in the hey day) the place simply rocked.
Would love to see Crisler get that atmosphere.
Go Blue!

What is it about Iowa and shit falling from the skies?

What do they think this is, wrigley field?
February 18th, 2014 at 4:43 PM ^
Holy shit, just watched the video on espn's link, IU would not play another game at Assembly Hall had this happened during a game. Would've crushed someone flat. It's hard to watch knowing it could've happened a few hours later during the game.

I'm thinking more like 2 or 3 killed if that section was packed... wow, glad it happened with nobody there
February 18th, 2014 at 5:24 PM ^
Damn thank god it didnt happen during the game or else someone would have been seriously injured or worse. Kinda creepy but whoever had those seats really dodged a brush with death.

more like aluminum or aluminum alloy, it flexes when it hits.

Pretty much every other school in the Big Ten has replaced or rebuilt their basketball arena. Keeping it going just because "it has such a storied, glorious history" is kind of dumb. The place has never had a good design and just renovating it won't solve the poor visibility of many of the seats that are either incredibly high up or blocked partially by the scoreboard.

February 18th, 2014 at 5:38 PM ^
Well he did just name three reasons, along with the fact that a beam just crushed a seat in the stand.
February 18th, 2014 at 6:28 PM ^
I, for one, am all in favor of tearing that place down. It's always seemed to have bad juju for Michigan.
February 18th, 2014 at 4:55 PM ^
Straight onto a seat...someone would have gotten wrecked. Scary stuff.
February 18th, 2014 at 4:55 PM ^
Imagine if you had season tickets for that seat!?! Pretty scary...
By the way - How in the heck did they get video of that falling? Do they have constant video running on the arena at all times??
February 18th, 2014 at 5:07 PM ^
on that nut job Crean.

The Indianapolis Star had a good photo of the some of damage (the seat that took the direct hit is gone - thanks for the catch, creelymonk10):
Yeah, that would probably have been fatal. Definitely glad this did not happen during a game.
February 18th, 2014 at 5:40 PM ^
The damaged seat is gone, with those 3 surrounding it also beat up. At least one death with several severe injuries. Very fortunate it happened this afternoon.

that's really scary. very thankful that happened to an empty seat.
