Harbaugh Podcast: Jim and Jack talk about officiating and the 'Harbaugh Rule'

Submitted by 1VaBlue1 on

The podcast has been advertised here before, but I thought the talk about officiating was interesting this morning.  The cut block that Kugler was called for spurred a question to the B1G office about what's legal in that situation.  They're also checking on WR picks - as Jim explained, he wants to know why there are never any OPI calls on pick routes.  He believes the rule is that blocking is allowed 1-yd downfield, and mentions that we always get picked at 3 yds.  (Personally, I've always thought it was a 3-yd rule in college, 1-yd in pro.)

Jack talked a lot about how proud he was that Jim has kept his composure this year.  Talking about the Harbaugh Rule (where coaches aren't allowed on the field at all), he called out the officials by saying that Meyer had to be shoved off the field by an official because he was in the way pre-snap.  Then two plays later, Iowa was given a bench warning for coaches on the field.  Said the officials were so mad at Meyer that they had to penalize Iowa!

Also Nature Boy was "Wooooo"-ing, so how bad can that be?  Plus, he expects to be in AA for the OSU game, and was asking for tickets.

All in the first 20 minutes, so here it is...

That dude is always screaming and yelling up and down the field.   I guess he gets a pass because he coaches for Indiana.

They lose their minds over JH tossing a clipboard up in the air—if they'd had to deal with Woody Hayes, they'd have crapped their pants.

Still don't get it about Woody Hayes.

Bo idolized him. Jack Harbaugh too. Jim even chose his glasses to make him look like Woody.

These old photos of Woody reinforce what I always saw in him--a grouchy, mean old cuss who looked like an old woman on a menopausal rage. I'm convinced these other guys are just wrong about him.

Winning is a cure all.  He had an explosive temper on game day to be sure, but when it comes to the behind the scenes work of preparing a football team to win on Saturday he was damn good.  I think that is something that the casual fan will never understand, the literally thousands of decisions that have to be made in order to run a program.

The only sport my dad ever gave a shit about was football, and he was a fervent fan of his alma mater Missouri, and of Michigan, my grandfather's alma mater. He was also a fan of the Lions, which made sense since the Lions of '50s and early '60s when I was a kid were strong teams.

I learned very early that there were two coaches my father hated: George Halas of the Chicago Bears, and Woody Hayes. The contempt my dad had for Hayes was particularly strong—he regarded Woody basically as a thuggish Neanderthal.

He was a damn good football coach.  And from everything else I've heard, he was a great person off the field, too.  He taught history at OSU in the off-season, and his players were as devoted to him as Bo's were at UM.  Make no mistake, he was all about winning and would let you know what he thought about things.  I was actually a little sad to see him go out like he did.  No excuse for punching that kid from Clemson.  None.  But it was just a sad way to see such a great career go down the drain.

I have no such feelings about the way Paterno's career ended.

He was Bo’s teacher and important to the history of this sport, and even this program. His building of Ohio State, being a raving madman, and his hatred of Michigan makes me hate him just like you do, but that doesn’t prevent me from having a little respect for the man.

I'm paraphrasing here but Rogan mentioned how they keep getting responses from the B1G essentially admitting officiating errors that were made and quipped, it would be nice to get those admissions made during the game.  Harbaugh quickly jumped in and called it 'whining'.  It was just an interesting, if brief, glimpse into some of the stuff we see on the broadcasts and wonder how it's reacted to behind close doors.

The podcast seems to have taken a decided turn these last few weeks where they're spending more time on the games at the opening of the show.  Really good stuff that you can't get in a presser.

I noticed that trend, also!  Jim wasn't even on the show following the MSU game, but was okay talking about the PSU loss.  But the last few weeks, he's been happier each show -praising players, good plays, and generally very upbeat.  He also talked a little about UW, which he hadn't done (talk about upcoming games) prior to this show.  This last show he was in a very good mood, and talk (and laughed) a lot about the officiating.  He also seems pretty pleased about Peters' play.  Hopefully, this just means that he feels good about the UW game coming up!

in no way pass interference.  Hayes just could not control his anger and emotions.

Hayes never ever got over that 1969 loss in Ann Arbor with his team of the century, so every game "up north" must be some kind of conspiracy brewing according to Hayes.

The games up in Ann Arbor in 1971, 1973, 1975 and 1977 were all great, competitive games in the rivalry.

Hayes earned his just desserts for "because we couldn't go for three!" during his last 3 years at Ohio State - lost three in a row to Michigan and only scored 12 points.

Semi threadjack but does anyone listen to Pat McAfee’s (former Indianapolis Colts punter/holder) podcast? If you don’t, go seek it out and give it a listed. The guy is hilarious and drops a lot of kicker knowledge that I never would have though would be so interesting. If you only listen to one thing, check out his Troy Polamalu story.

damn, our coach is the best! I truly hope he never leaves. Such an awesome family. I like how Ric said his friends want Jim back in the NFL, and then said "no way, he's staying in Ann Arbor!"
