Duke Releases 5-Star 2019 Top 50 MBB Recruit Boogie Ellis
Duke has released 5-star recruit, shooting guard Boogie Ellis, from his letter of intent.
Do any of our recruiting experts know whether Michigan has pursued this recruit? Position of need, and a clearly a top recruit.
Would love a little Boogie on the team!
The article states other schools he was interested in. My guess it's one of those unless they or he burned bridges.
Memphis?
Memphis secured the bag for him. Michigan has no shot, not that we ever did.
Smart move. He’s only the #34 overall player in 2019 and probably wouldn’t get much PT at Duke.
only the #34 player. haha.
Oh suuuuure, go ahead and shame the #35 kid why don'tcha?
/s
Yeah, he's a guy who could come right in at Michigan and either start or get a lot of minutes as a freshman. The coaches could certainly sell that, plus all the other attributes U-M and Beilein offer. But realistically at this late hour, he's likely to gravitate toward the schools that he's at least had some past relationship with.
Only reason he's leaving is because the check cleared. He's going to Memphis.
duke's check bounced?
Only reason he's leaving is because the check cleared. He's going to Memphis.
By "past relationship", you mean "schools that offered him money, just not as much as Duke", right?
LoL kids like him dont play basketball for a free scholarship they play ball with only one goal in mind to make millions in the NBA. School is just another obstacle in their path.
From the article:
Memphis is expected to be "heavily involved" in the process this time around, 247Sports reports.
Wink, wink. Nudge, nudge.
Say no more!
Your wife---is she a goer? Does she go? Does she go? Know what I mean? Say...No...More!... know what I mean? Know what I mean?
“Heavily involved” = unmarked non-sequential bills in a gym bag
Absolutely love that the star of Blue Chips, a movie about dropping bags, is now dropping bags as the head coach of Memphis. The poetic symmetry is just... *chef's kiss*
Maybe he'll re-enact the HC role, hold a press conference outing the whole system, then mic drop and walk off.
Penny needs to sign a kid named Neon.
Those tests are culturally biased.
My only question, does he have to return all the money he took from Duke? Or is that fine. Or can Memphis cover it like when a new school covers a coaches buyout? Because if I'm Coach K, I'm not letting him out until he gives our bag back lmao no double dipping.
I think recurring monthly payments is the preferred option from coaches to avoid this type of thing. Not sure there is a lump sum option.
But what if I have a structured settlement, but need cash now?
877-CASH-NOW
I think Memphis has an assistant coach named J.G.Wentworth.
Saddens me that I think this is funny.
Ahh, so THATS why you go to Memphis.
I know monthly payments are the go to in football, but I feel like elite prospects can demand whatever in basketball. But even a monthly option, lets say he's getting 20k a month he's committed. He gotta return the money for the 4 months he's been committed or is it a sunk cost? This is what I gotta start asking kids lmao.
That's the very definition of a sunk cost. I suppose they could refuse to do business with the agent in future but that's about it. They have no future relationship with the player to leverage and they can't plausibly threaten any sort of legal action to force return of the funds.
Well I mean in this case, they had the leverage of the LOI.
So I believe kids get money from multiple companies as an attempt to basically bribe them, but coaches only pay them if they actually go to the school.
haha. what's coach k gonna do? call him out?
Coach K could post the paper trail of the money on Twitter and nothing would happen to him.
Idk, not let him out of his LOI?
My guess is that the kids tells K (or other fanancier) that he's keeping the money unless K is ok with it being public.
Yea, because Coach K is gonna get in trouble for it lmao.
Coach K would be good. The kid would get in trouble for not paying taxes on it
I'm pretty sure we can look forward to a number of remarkably credulous articles about the rebirth of Memphis basketball.
Sorry, intended for UM fan from Sidney!

He is a great recruiter.
I'm glad you added "MBB" because I definitely thought this was their women's team at first.
If he commits to Memphis, does that impact Lester Quinones?
nah, they have enough cash for both.
Love the fact that Penny has just came in and all of the sudden Memphis is THE destination for these 5 star players. Nothing to see here folks, move along?
While I do believe they are paying people, I could see why there would be n initial recruiting influx there w/o paying kids.
Memphis is a very fertile recruiting ground, Penny is the Memphis prodigal son and an all time talent.
I do think there are payments going on, but there are logical reasons for getting top talent. I mean the #1 kid in the country is from Memphis.
Wiseman, yes. The others such as Hampton, Ellis and Achiuwa in the 2019 class and the number 2 player in the 2020 class dont make as much sense. Last time Memphis was a recruiting power was under Calipari...hmmm!
