Does Alford bring any transfers with him?

Submitted by Bo Harbaugh on March 13th, 2024 at 3:11 PM

Love that we stole Tony Alford from OSU.  Curious if the board thinks he will try to bring along any OSU rb with him.

I think we are set next year with Mullings and Edwards (thunder and lightning), and we have Marshall, Cabana, and Hall waiting on the depth chart. That said, talent is talent, and the opportunity to stregthen your roster and damage your rivals with one move is enticing.

For the board, would we want anyone off the OSU roster rn (assuming Judkins and Henderson are not moving) ?

No idea and not to thread-jack but just listened to Zach Smith's podcast (yes I know, I know) on why he thinks this happened.   First and foremost he could not have been more complimentary about Alford and thinks this is a huge loss to the OSU program.  Secondly he thinks he left due to the disfunction between the offensive coaches at OSU and bringing in Kelly is only going to make things worse.  He said it wasnt a coincidence that Alford left the day after his first practice with the Kelly/Day combo.

I know the guy is an absolute tool but I sure hope he's right on this one.

Well......if you could point me to one of those 100 that has an ex-assistant for OSU who coached alongside Alford and has a bit of a chip on his shoulder against the current program I'll be sure to listen to what they have to say.

At least inside my Browns/OSU twitter feed (and I probably follow most of your 100 there due to my Browns fandom) the reaction has been either "no big deal" or "OMG traitorz" but nobody is talking about why it happened.  Smith was the only one, so far at least, that has done that.

Stolen from an OSU fan on Reddit:

Some comments from Jeremy Birmingham, one of our best insiders (paraphrased):

-Said there was a lot of conversation back in January if Alford had a future at OSU

-Timing and destination is the shock, not that he left.

-Alford had opportunity to go to USC, Miami and ND recently in this offseason and turned them down.

-Raise was very minimal going to Michigan

-Birm says this feels very personal by Alford.

-OSU starting the process now to replace him. Austin Ward and Birm don't really have a list. Ward said he does not think OSU was prepping for this.

-OSU has to move quickly because of the portal in the spring and getting someone in place at OSU scheme wise.

-This is a lateral move they said.

-Discussion to replace him has ramped up in the last 48 hours

-Timing is the biggest issue.

-Birm said Day wants to get a little younger at the RB coaching position.

-Chip Kelly will have a big say in who comes in. They will look at guys he has ties to.

In all honesty I can’t believe he didn’t leave earlier.  The backs were gaining chunk yardage and had a whole showcase drive where they successfully rammed it down Michigans throat.  “Coach look what my guys can do when you feed them.”  “That’s real good Alford, now check out this passing game, we have to feed all these 5 star receivers or they’ll leave / I’ll have to reevaluate my offensive system.”

I was thinking that there was a correlation between one day of practice and him leaving. I thank you for your sacrifice to confirm my suspicions.

There's a reason why Chip failed in the NFL and UCLA. He has a crazy way of doing things that doesn't relate to the NFL player and now today's CFB player.

Pretty much. When he didn't attend the Press conference and wasn't out recruiting, I thought those were clear signs that he was not staying. I will miss him and think he did a great job even though some apparently think it is a job that anyone can do.

You listened to Zach Smith's podcast? Did you lose a really bad bet? Place last in your fantasy league and this is the punishment? Or are you just a sadistic masochist?

I get wanting to hear what "the other side" is thinking, but it feels like just about any OSU outlet would be better than.....that one.

Here's why -he's an ex OSU coach who still has relationships in that building.  He coached alongside Alford for several years so he knows first hand what Alford is like and why he likely left the program.  I am in no way vouching for the guy but if you want actual on the ground information on this situation I'm not sure where you'd go for better insight.

I follow a LOT of OSU reporters simply because they cover both the Browns and the Buckeyes.  He's the only one who's insinuated there was disfunction in the offensive coaching staff last year and he's the only one who thinks the Day/Kelly combo led to Alford's leaving.  He might be wrong but his explanation makes a lot more sense to me than anything else I've read so far.

He's a Meyer guy.  He's not a huge fan of Day and thinks Josh Gattis is one of the biggest idiots on the planet.

He's also a complete asshole as a human.  But complete assholes are sometimes your best source of information.

I'd like to see some people with insight weigh in on just how much of a learning curve there will be to on-boarding a Chip Kelly offense and how ideally suited OSU's current personnel may be. Granted, he's got talented players, and will have to be flexible himself--Day didn't hire him without consideration of those issues. But--pressure to win now being what it is--Kelly has to make it work from jump. (Or do I have it wrong? Maybe they have 3/4 of the season to get it right?) What are the odds, as people see it?

To spend this kind of money, to do this amount of Heimlich maneuvering and fail would be. . . catastrophic.

The average CFB fan of other teams don't realize how talented Michigan's RB room truly is right now. We are very far removed from needing transfers at the RB position.

I look forward to Alford's move to Michigan putting us in a btter position on the recruiting trail with the 2025 class(Marquises Davis and Bo Jackson at least).

11 Warriors is full of perplexed Bucknuts who cannot fathom why a coach would move on to a rival program sure to be hit with crippling sanctions.

I wonder when it will truly dawn on them.

They are still stuck on the 3rd stage of grief which is bargaining.  They want so much for something bad to come out about Michigan and having our championship taken away.  Unfortunately for them that is not happening.

Hopefully, they will be able to graduate to stage 4 of grief in the near future which is depression.

I agree it would be a long shot.  However, talent is talent and if he is half the recruiter that Seth makes him sound like, I don’t think you say no to a player currently on OSU’s roster.  If OSU doesn’t have attrition after the spring practice session I’ll be shocked.  They have a lot of talented mouths to feed and only so much playing time.  Oh and those guys probably already collected a decent chunk of NIL money.
