Devin Gardner appreciation

Submitted by Chaz_Smash on January 16th, 2022 at 2:51 PM

After consuming more Michigan content than usual the past two months, I've become a bigger fan of Devin Gardner as a broadcaster. He's funny, enthusiastic and has great insight.

Any chance Michigan would continue the two former players tradition and try a radio booth of Jansen and Gardner (if he'd even be interested)? I'm sure people who live in SE Michigan have seen more of him on TV/radio

Same! I met him in RO doing his film breakdowns and he was really cool. I like his energy at times on the radio.

having worked with a famous radio personality for almost 8 years I can tell you that it must be what they teach because the guy I know is very quiet in real life and is an amped up version of himself (at max volume) when he does his show. Apparently you really have to exert.

If Sam would shut up and quit interrupting him he wouldn't have to talk so loudly. Just because he is not a pathological homer, like Sam, does not mean he hates Cade-Sam is the issue. Borges, post season has been very critical of Cade-clearly implies that Michigan cannot contend for an NC with him and that the reigns need to be turned over to JJ.

Here is what you said:

You’re just mad you didn’t post it first and claim a public tweet was insider info

What Baumgardner said was insider information. He's talking about his sources. Why are you saying it is not insider information?

Also, how I worded my original reply to you was wrong.

I have seen him quite a bit as a color commentator on high school sports and I guess one person's "enthusiasm" is another's "Why is this guy yelling all the time?"

I don't want someone to put me to sleep, but being hyper doesn't do much for me either.

I appreciate the good games, and the effort that DG gave to this program. I appreciate him for sticking it out in a pretty, less than ideal, situation for himself as a highly rated mobile QB. I was at the 2012 Northwestern game which he led a comeback in overtime. I sat in the end zone both where Roundteee caught the unlikely bomb from DG in the final seconds of regulation, and where the game was ended on a great defensive play. I’m thankful for him, sort of embarrassingly, wearing the #98 for 2 years. It showed he didn’t care what others thought because he was roasted by many in the media for wearing that number compared with the overall results on the field. Of course, I am very thankful his near heroics against OSU.

But I personally, can do without his obnoxiousness as a radio/TV personality. It feels like he’s trying to hard. If he wasn’t our guy, most of us probably wouldn’t be able to take him as a media personality, much like we poopoo on most any other media personality who isn’t Joel Klatt or Desmond Howard, who are homers for us. Devin is no Joel or Desmond.

I wish him success in what he does, but hope he isn’t the play by play or color guy for Michigan radio, again, because it seems he tries too hard to be hype, and he’s kind of petty about his time here at Michigan compared to current players’ fortune under Harbaugh. If he were calling any UM games, he would bring up, at least once per game how much better he would have been if he had the pass protection of “so and so” Michigan quarterback. He does it every week when talking with Sam and throwing shade at Cade.

Porbably not the popular opinion here, but just my 2 cents as a fan who enjoys the radio broadcast of the games.

I've not listened to him as a broadcaster at all, but DG is probably my favorite UM player from the many years I've watched college football (coming from an OSU fan). When JT Barrett went down with a broken ankle in The Game, Gardner was quick to run out to his side when it became apparent it was a serious injury. Total, total class act from a player on the other side of the rivalry. I'll never forget that. If I ever meet him, his next beer is on me.

Oh no.  Devin yells on the radio.  I swear I thought this year would be different.  Same “old” crap.  I don’t like being put to sleep, but he yells too much.  Un)&&believable!

Yeah don't really get the love.  Not trying to hate either as I have nothing against him as a person but honestly he's way too loud and obnoxious, talks about himself too much and isn't all that great at his insight and breakdown.  He's not terrible at that part but Borges is much better.  It's clear he thinks he's pretty good at it though!

I love DG's breakdown of the offense. His yelling sometimes gets a little over the top - watching on youtube it works because you can see Sam laughing and kind of egging him on :) His national broadcasts are normal volumes. Future is bright for him, whether its Michigan or other national broadcasts. He has a passion for the game and has a great personality

Devin has done a lot of HS games the past year it so. His insight into the game is outstanding. He informed but doesn't overwhelm and seems very comfortable in the booth.

Yeah Devin constant harping on McNamara was over the top. I can’t recall a single player other than McNamara that was the target os so many complaints. Cade was clearly under Gardner’s skin for whatever reason. After about the third adhominem attack on McNamara it was Gardner coming off in a bad light not Cade.

Devin, one of the greatest QB's to ever play at the University of Michigan, or Devin, the one who thought Joe Milton was going to be the best QB in the history of the NFL

Devin has a terrific personality and knows his football stuff. I really like listening to him talk football and QB play in particular. Al Borges too. Is Borges retired from coaching or is it just a matter of having no suitors?
