Blake Corum and J.J. McCarthy – One Frame at a Time

Submitted by MGoGrendel on December 7th, 2021 at 1:36 PM

I’ve watched Blake’s TD run many times now – over and over – and I was impressed by how many Iowa defenders were left flat on their face without touching Blake.  Here are some images:

This is Blake’s impressive cut after crossing the LOS.  J.J. is a few yards back, but starts to catch up as Blake cuts towards the sideline.  The Iowa defender tackles Blakes jet stream and is left horizontal on the field.  Gus is calling the play and says: “cooorRUM – WHAT A MOVE!” (in his annoying voice).

This is further downfield where two defenders may have a chance to reach Blake.  #33 inexplicitly leaves his feet, which allow Sainristil to push him over.  JJ reaches back to slow down #26

J.J. appears to get minimal force on #26 while also trying to protect Blake from #33.  But #33 was airborne and is looking for a safe place to land…

…leaving him flat on his face and unable to trip Blake as he breaks his own fall.  Meanwhile, #26 must have been zapped with something in J.J.’s touch as he too goes airborne.

At this point, two more Iowa defenders are horizontal, and The Good Guys are all advancing.

You’ll never guess what happens next! (Click here for the rest of the story).

I'm a bit surprised OP.  Nice post but when you close with "what happens next" I'd have bet anything you'd go here for the true "rest of the story" for that epic run.

I usually don't really notice announcers for good or bad, but seriously what was up with "AIDAN HUTCHINSON!! HE'LL ROLL UP TO YOU AND MAKE YOU SMELL HIS COLOGNE!!"

Color commentating on the fly to make things sound more dramatic is a high level skill I don't have either, but that line is just so.... oddly specific.

Cool look at it.  I'm assuming JJ looking so fast was some combination of camera angle and Corum going down a gear to set up blocks.  I also think Corum suffers from short leg syndrome similar to Barry Sanders.

Corum said he slowed down to allow JJ to catch up for blocking, but some loose math was used and timed JJ at about 4.6 from the 30 to 30 (40 yards). JJ wasn't starting from a stop at the 30 but he also didn't run into a straight line. So it might be somewhat deceptive but that kid is really fast.

I never understand people's criticisms of announcers.  If they're constantly giving wrong info like Brandy that's one thing, but what is wrong with Gus Johnson getting excited?  Especially since he clearly loves Michigan.  Ufer had the same excitement.  So did Beckmann.  Would you rather have Joe Buck droning on?? "michigan wins it..."  There is nothing inherently annoying about Johnson's voice.  Seems like a you problem more than a him problem.  That said, love the stills of the horizontal Hawkeyes.

You're questioning people's criticism of announcers by criticizing Joe Buck's announcing style?

BTW - The answer to what appears to be your real issue, "why don't people like Gus Johnson?" For me, there's no subtlety there. If everything is scream worthy, then nothing is interesting, if it's all screams. You bring up a comparison of Bob Ufer, that's exactly the opposite of Ufer. There's a reason why that AC call is so iconic, it's because he didn't do it every game three times. Beckmann was perfect. Gold standard. Again, what made Beckmann so good was his ability to tell a story. We all like the climax of the story, but you build to the climax. That's what defines it. If you're always there, you've got nothing.

Simply, I don't particularly care for people screaming at me in real life. Gus doesn't add anything to the game, he's not insightful he just calls the game. Which is fine. He doesn't tee up Klatt with any particular expertise. He's actually kind of klunky when he wants to get Joel to talk about a topic.

Gus does one thing, and that's why FOX hired him and paid him to do it. He screams. Some people love it and have a big ole time with it. Others, like myself, would just rather not. Save the theatrics for the truly momentous occasions, I don't need you to fabricate excitement. If the game is exciting, I'll be excited.

Gus was perfect for the NCAA tournament for an underdog team upset in a game where I didn't particularly care or feel invested. Dial me in with 7 minutes left in a close game, Gus can do that with the best of them. Four hours of Gus doing the exact same thing on a Saturday afternoon, doesn't work for me.

I'm not a fan of Gus Johnson.  I do like the State Farm commercial where he says something along the lines of "Big Ten fans love having me call their games" in a very tongue-in-cheek way.  I'm guessing I'm not alone in finding him annoying.

Joe Buck has a good baseball voice; he does know when to let the play on the field speak for itself.  Although, I think he may have become a character of himself later in his career.

p.s.   I am not so enthralled by
         Johnson either - something
about his tone sets my teeth
         on edge.  I appreciate his
         enthusiasm, but prefer a more
         understated style, like Keith
Jackson (sadly, no, he is still
        not with us anymore).

Uh, well for starters…Johnson’s constant mentioning of “The World Famous Ohio State Buckeyes” is annoying as hell.  He even worked that into Saturday’s game. He’s just annoying. I do appreciate Joel Klatt however, one of the best in the biz.

I rewatched the UM-PSU game recently, an ESPN broadcast.  Sean McDonough & Orlavsky we’re the broadcast team.  So much better from top to bottom than Fox.  Fewer commercials, relevant and frequent replays, and play by play which was not about them, but the action on the field.

It's just that some of us of a certain age would like for one or two announcers (not everyone) to use the power of understatement.

I remember a big game between Alabama and USC from the 1970s. It was in LA. USC scored an important TD. Total pandemonium throughout the stadium, and Keith Jackson's voice, level as could be and in a normal conversational tone, cut through "touchdown University of Southern California."

Excitement from announcers broadcasting on the University's network is fine; everyone understands people hired to be homers. A few hyperactive guys where it's part of their schtick (e.g. Dick Vitale or the Saturday Game Day guy who likes to put on one of the mascot heads) are OK. Just one or two guys who don't have to be the center of attention would be nice.

I like Gus when we're winning the football game.  I don't like him when we're losing.  I recall the OSU games a few years back where he went crazy with every OSU touchdown while Michigan was down like 3+ scores.  Felt like he was piling on and made me really question his so called Michigan fandom.  But maybe that was just my sour mood as we were getting blown out.

The Fox CFB commercial breaks are 10X more annoying.  I almost view Gus as an extension of this production, which is unfair to him.

Sainrstil’s hustle and downfield blocking is something to be celebrated. The dude just gets it done!

Roman Wilson also has a key block right when Corum gets to the 2nd level.

This team has become so efficient in the their TE and WR blocking in the open field. It’s just really good football.

#33 leaving his feet wasn't inexplicable at all. His only chance was to throw his body into what had become a tightly packed group and hope that being a human bowling ball would knock down a few pins and/or slow down Corum enough so that the chasing player could catch him.

Watch the video replay - you can see the point where Corum accelerates.  When Sainristil gets his block in, and JJ looks back at the guy behind them.  That is when Blake hit the jets and screamed away from the field.  All Sainristil did was slow his guy down a step, and that was all he had to do.  Same with JJ - just interfere for a moment.

What a spectacular piece of team performance that was!

And Blake says he was only at 85%...  (I'm cackling with glee right now!)

"What a spectacular piece of team performance that was!"

Indeed.  The downfield blocking of our WR's, TE's, and yes, our backup QB has been an absolute joy to watch.  You could make good money running clinics for high school football coaches and just play UM tape.

What a well-coached team.

Or front-runners and stars. He's not the only one who does this (and hell, that was the knock on Howard Cosell back in the day), but Gus is one of the worse these days.

It's like they're programming for kids with severe A.D.D. who've never seen a football game before and won't be interested unless you DEMAND THEY BE EXCITED!

I love it when the QB gets out and blocks. Patterson did it against ND and it was my favorite play of his. This one JJ got 2 guys and somehow seemed to be faster than everyone else (I get Blake’s hobbled but still…)

The last thing I need is for announcers (or scoreboards, or canned music) telling me when I am supposed to be excited.  It leads to hyping just about everything. That's for pro wrestling.
Especially on TV, where we can see what's going on. I'll add the emotion myself, thank you very much,

I've been around a while, so I grew up on Pat Summeral and Tom Brookshier calling NFL games in the '70s. I liked how Vin Scully stepped away from the mic in big moments like when Hank Aaron broke Babe Ruth's home run record and let the crowd do the talking. I remember guys with a distinctive sound, like Jack Buck. Or a character like Harry Caray. (My favorite as a kid was Pittsburgh Pirates announcer Bob Prince),

If you can be humorous (like Ufer) or folksy (like Ernie Harwell or Keith Jackson), then great. That works. But don't shove it down our throats.

One of the things that caught my attention - no block in the back penalty. We all know it was as likely as not in years past.
