Ambry Thomas to wear #1

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Early enrollee freshman numbers are starting to trickle out.

According to a video tweeted out by the official U-M recruiting account, Ambry Thomas will wear #1.

Kekoa Crawford also wears #1.

It's not final until the first game because players compete for jersey numbers in Fall camp, but we will get to see #1 on a defensive player in the spring game.

Other numbers confirmed-

  • #2 Donovan Jeter
  • #7 Tarik Black
  • #9 Donovan Peoples-Jones
  • #16 Jaylen Kelly-Powell
  • #25 Benjamin St-Juste
  • #26 J'Marick Woods

It's gonna be DPJ vs Grant Perry and Jeter vs Carlo Kemp for those numbers.

DPJ has 9, obviously Perry is also wearing that number. I wouldn't be surprised if Perry's legal situation allows DPJ to earn the number permanently (I know this is a silly consequence of a serious thing).

Edit: Oh, sorry, didn't see your last sentence there.

Doesn't Crawford also wear #1 on offense? Unless Thomas is taking offensive snaps the matter seems settled there--both can rock it. But thanks for this update! Learning freshman jersey numbers is always awesome.

I remember an interview at Army AA practices where Thomas said that the coaches wanted to see him play on both sides of the ball. I think he said that he would try to get the defensive playbook down before moving on to taking offensive snaps. It will be interesting to see how that plays out given the fact that Crawford is only a year ahead of Thomas.

In some ways, yes. In some ways, no. People aren't going to get as enraged about it now as they were 10 years ago when Braylon Edwards was fresher in people's minds. If Harbaugh allowed a defensive back to wear #1 back in 2008, then there would have been more of an uproar about it.

Maybe that'll ignite a spark on Kemp's ass if he doesn't want to lose his number. He redshirted right? Had high hopes for him.

It's tradition and freshman just demanding traditional numbers is just a bit off. We gave Asiasi #2 and then he followed Jed to UCLA a year later. These numbers #1 and #2 should mean something. Shouldn't be a recruiting angle. Kids should earn those numbers. Just my take. Braylon has every right to say something. He earned that jersey and was unbelievable at Michigan.

I would much rather have a freshman wear it and try to live up to that number than someone play for 3 years, and then switch numbers.... #1 and #2 will be special no matter who wears it now, and if some wideout makes their mark at UM wearing a different number (like #9) then good for them for creating a new tradition.
