Durkin Leaves, Partridge Stays

Recruits care more about the man in the middle. [Fuller]

While Michigan lost a strong recruiter when DJ Durkin accepted the head job at Maryland, it doesn't appear his departure is going to have a significant impact on the program's recruiting, at least in the short term. The latest Wolverine pledge, Jordan Elliott*, summed up the general feeling among the commits:

The reaction from uncommitted targets depends on the prospect; for the most part, their ties are more to the program—Jim Harbaugh's program—or their primary recruiter. The Wolverine's Tim Sullivan posted reactions from several prospects that included four-star TX DE Levi Onwuzurike saying that it wouldn't affect him as long as Greg Mattison stayed on staff ($). Five-star CA OLB Caleb Kelly said it affects his recruitment, but he's been considered a long-shot at best for a while now. This is worth watching, though:

Los Angeles Loyola 2016 cornerback David Long Jr.

"That would be huge [to lose him], but if [Stanford defensive coordinator Lance] Anderson replaces him it would work perfectly, but that's in a perfect world."

Despite being a Stanford commit, Long seemed more likely to end up at Michigan. We'll see what comes of his imminent in-home visit; hopefully that clears up any concern.

Meanwhile, 247's Steve Wiltfong reported today that director of player personnel Chris Partridge will not follow Durkin to Maryland, which was rumored to be a strong possibility—Sam Webb added Partridge is in line for an "increased role" with the program. While Michigan's recruiting in New Jersey has reached the point where Partridge isn't essential to their ability to land that state's top talent—more NJ recruits mention Jabrill Peppers than Partridge these days—it's still a a significant plus to have his connections there.

*So I can save myself an extra paragraph, Elliott isn't going anywhere.

Nauta In Wait-And-See Mode

Michigan's chances with five-star GA TE Isaac Nauta may have received a huge boost when Georgia fired Mark Richt, but Nauta told 247's Kipp Adams a lot depends on who's next in line in Athens ($):

Nauta is unsure how the coaching changes will affect Georgia's chances.

"It depends on who it is," Nauta said. "If there is a coach brought in that I have a previous relationship with, especially on the recruiting trail, then no. I am going to have to look into everything - how the offensive coordinator uses the tight ends - to make sure I am making the right decision."

Georgia looks poised to hire Alabama DC Kirby Smart; I have no clue how that'd impact Nauta. On one hand, Nauta is probably at least somewhat familiar with Smart since he's been recruited by Alabama. On the other hand, Smart wasn't his primary or secondary recruiter at Bama.

This could be a case where the offensive coordinator hire matters much more than the head coach hire. I get the sense Nauta is going to give Georgia every possible chance to convince him to stay close to home; if anyone else can land him, though, it's Michigan.

More OSU Visit Reactions

Visit reactions continue to trickle in from last weekend. It's hard to get a read on top-100 MD OG Terrance Davis, who talked up the game atmosphere to Rivals' Adam Friedman but added he doesn't have a leader ($):

"It was a good visit but I guess it's different when you take an official visit during the season," he said. "The coaches have to focus on the game. It was their biggest game of the season. I understand that the game is going to take up most of their time. It was still a good visit.

"I loved my time in Michigan," said Davis. "It could have been better. It didn't hurt them in any way. I had a pretty good visit overall. I wouldn't say I have a leader right now."

It's unclear which school is the biggest contender aside from Michigan; it's still getting tougher and tougher to expect Davis to wind up in Ann Arbor the longer this drags out without a commitment.

There no question about where Michigan stands with three-star FL DT Keyshon Camp:

Camp, a Florida native, wasn't a fan of the weather. If a relatively mild late-November day elicited that reaction, it's probably best for all parties involved for Camp to wind up at a warm-weather school.

247's Clint Brewster posted a few notes on four-star TX ILB Dontavious Jackson after his official visit ($):

I was told that even the coaches recruiting Jackson don't have a great hunch as to where he will end up and that one school is not really out in front as a lock but Texas, Michigan, and Florida State are in the best position.

A reason for optimism or pessimism, depending on your perspective: Brewster added that Jackson isn't as concerned about distance from home as the people advising him.

Top Targets Getting In-Homes

Five-star NJ RB Kareem Walker:

Top-100 TX OT Jean Delance:

DJ Durkin (awkward) and Greg Mattison also dropped in on Rashan Gary and Jordan Fuller this week, per Steve Lorenz. For those worried, Durkin's departure shouldn't affect M's chances with Gary—of that I'm quite confident.

Etc.

Brandon Peters is among elite company as a finalist for the Army Player of the Year award:

In addition, Peters and Ben Bredeson took home Gatorade POTY awards for the states of Indiana and Wisconsin, respectively.

There was a recruit who plans to EE except for the Spring (which at UM is actually summer) term, not for Winter. Was that Nauta? Then again I think Nauta tweeted something about being excited to get on a college campus in 5-6 weeks. Who knows.

Also, if he's convinceable, maybe they would convince him to enroll at UGA and trust they will find someone good. Wouldn't really be a wise choice, but he does seem strangely tied to UGA considering his choice is between staying in GA (and getting the rock once or twice a game) and coming to be a star of Harbaugh's TE-heavy team.

guys, it's GOOD when other coaches see what working under Harbaugh does for your career. You WANT guys to move on to bigger things (for them). Now, I'm not saying it's always good in the immediate but nobody wants to go work under a guy that is seen as a career dead end. The key is to keep the really good guys as long as possible (think Narduzzi) buy Durkin is very young, was already a hot commodity before coming here and was offered a solid salary at a school surrounded by talent and major promised corporate financial support. He loses and he's back to being a hot commodity DC. He wins and he could build a power. He had to take that job. I think we'll be fine but the next hire has to stick around for a bit if successful. You want UM coaches being successful and moving up in the CFB world to attract the newer crop of great minds but (again, like Narduzzi at msu) I think we need a stable building block at DC for a while (4 years minimum). Recruits need to know the guy could move on but isn't any time soon.

Ace, from a recruiting perspective, is there a DC candidate who could compete on Durkin's level? I know Pruitt seems to have a lot of hype from recruits and we know what Mattison/Jackson bring to the table but maybe one of the other coaches listed in Brian's DC post today?

...with some of the names on that list, but Pruitt would be a home run hire as a recruiter—I'd say he'd even be an upgrade over Durkin, and that's saying something. Lance Anderson was Stanford's recruiting coordinator from 2007-11, when they did quite well on the trail, and David Long mentioned he'd love for Anderson to wind up at Michigan (quote in the post); I'd assume that would be a solid recruiting hire, as well.

What in the world did Davis mean when asked about his visit that "It could have been better."  On the one hand he does understand that the coaches were focused on THE GAME, but what did he miss out on the Laquon Treadwell/Ole Miss treatment???

he even said so. He said that the timing was just not ideal as the staff had to prep for their biggest game when a visit on a bye or cupcake gives staff more time with them. I'm sure seeing us get whooped wasn't ideal but that didn't seem to be the issue. He also said the visit didn't hurt us but he knows it could have been better if he came at another time. No worries, IMO.

That's one reason why Michigan's staff has encouraged a lot of commits (a.k.a. guys who have generally already enjoyed the game experience and bought in) to take official visits after the season. If they're not on officials, the coaches can work on convincing the guys who still need to be swayed.

Durkin was our best recruiter? Yes he's a good recruiter but he's only been DC a couple years. Although I really really like Durkin I wouldn't exactly call him "elite". With UM's clout there are a lot of DC's that will equal or surpass him in both scheme and recruiting. That fella from Georgia would fit nicely, but would also be short term before he becomes a HC somewhere. Harbaugh and UMs clout definitely shouldn't ld hurt that goal.

I know Durkin won "Recruiter of the year" but I didn't see him live up to that billing here. And I will allow that he was only here for a year, but I didn;t see as much impact on high level recruits that I did the first year Mattison joined the staff. Mattison has always been a top flight recruiter and is probably responsible for more high end recruits than anyone in the game.

GMatt is just a natural recruiter. Kids love the guy. I think Harbaugh gets crazy respect for who he is but I'd also bet that Mattison has a better relationship with those he's recruiting. Harbaugh likely crushes it with QBs and recruits that are very competitive and/or quirky like himself. I'm sure he and Peters are very tight. I'd bet a visit from a certain Arizona DL/LB he once babysat would remind the family why they like Jim so much as they're all very similar. Yet, I'd bet any guy Mattison personally recruits would say they're closer and GMatt is more important to them at the moment. It's just kind of how recruiting works anyway. The HC sometimes never becomes closer to players than their position coach/recruiter but often only does when they get to playing under them. It's how it goes. Mattison is so important that I think it's imperative to start finding or grooming a replacement "ace recruiter" if we haven't.

Thats the read I am getting as well, it sounds like he needs a reason not to go there rather than a reason to go there, whereas it is an opposite dynamic for Michigan's chances.  I think it's going to take a lot to not end up as the 2nd place team to an SEC power, which is a patter I am getting really tired of.

Seems like Durkin was heavily involved in the LB recruiting so thats the main worry as its so unsettled.

Davis sounded like he didnt get the attention he normally has due to the game and I am sure other recruits didnt help - only so many man hours.  This is the least committed he has sounded - he usually gushes.

I am with the guy above with Nauta.  he seems like he wants to give GA every possibiity in the world to get him.  And someone like that usually ends up at the place he is trying to find every reason to go to.

As for Long I wouldnt pick a coach based on 1 commit ever - I dont know if Stanford lost a ton post 2014 but this was not a good defense this yr under his care.

The narrative before the season was how last year the offense was young and needed the defense to cover for it, but this year the defense was young and needed the offense and a senior Hogan to cover for it, and that was probably part of the dropoff.  I'm not sure but I think Stanford's also had a bit of a dropoff in terms of recruiting class strength as well, so they may not be getting the same kinds of guys across the  board that they were used to.

so my uf source who first told me that nuss was going to uf just told me that eason is staying for an extra day at uf and has told players there that he is decommitting and going to uf and that nauta will go wherever he goes

eason is at uf right now and is staying an extra day, the word is that he is telling the current players that he is going to decommit from Georgia and commit to uf and that nauta is going to come with him. this was told to me by the guy who told me that nuss was going to uf. I was the one who first posted nuss to uf on here last year. but this time I hope he's wrong
