Exit: Keith Washington Comment Count

[Bryan Fuller]

Per Sam Webb, Keith Washington has given word that he intends to depart from Ann Arbor.

A 3-star recruit out of Prattville and one of Harbaugh's first recruits, Washington redshirted in 2015 and appeared in nine games last year. He was reportedly in the mix for the second corner spot, and Mike Zordich mentioned earlier today that we may see him in different roles as well. Apparently, this is not so.

The starting corners will now likely come from the group of Lavert Hill, David Long, Brandon Watson, and Ambry Thomas. Drake Harris and Benjamin St-Juste are also extant, as is Jaylen Kelly-Powell.

And his YMRMFSPA was Steve Breaston. I wonder if he would have seen time returning kicks this year?

Oh well. This is definitely a tough one to swallow, and really knocks down our already slim depth at CB.

As a RS sophomore with an open depth chart after 5 seniors graduate from the defensive backfield, I would think it would make more sense to compete this year and see what happens. Get the degree after your redshirt junior year and grad transfer for your final year or possibly two if you can't break through.

But it is hard to know if he was falling behind younger players on the depth chart or just possibly not happy here anymore. There has been some turnover in the staff that may have affected him (Greg Jackson last year and Antonio Richards this year).

Regardless of what the reason is—playing time, position switch, dislike of coaches, distance from home, weather, change in academic direction, whatever—people are mistaken if they think the decision to transfer by any transferee doesn't reflect an implicit determination that other things are more important than a Michigan degree. That's inherent in the decision to transfer. If getting a degree from U-M was paramount, they wouldn't transfer.

To some people, sticking it out regardless of the situation is worth it, while for others it's not. There's nothing wrong with that; people have to do what they want. That's why I said getting a Michigan degree isn't for everybody.

As far as "letting it go" goes, I'm not going to lose a minute of sleep over this. I hope Washington reconsiders because I'm a Michigan grad and believe in the value of a degree from here, but that's his decision.

There's been some bad rumblings about David Long as well.  JKP was just moved to Corner as Sam reported this weekend.  There is the potential to be SCARY then come the Florida game.  We might see Drake Harris/St. Juste out there as our 4th corner behind Hill, Watson, and Ambry.

The *Dudes* will be ready to play Michigan Football come Texas or highwater. If Washington was unable to step it up another notch, so be it, and good luck elsewhere son. Next.

Quiting is not good and I thought the kid looked good in the spring game. I am sure he would see the field so I really do not get it. If it is for getting knocked down the depth chart, we have some really good freshman. I love me some St. Juste. Malzone needs to transfer if anyone. He has less of a chance of playing then I do. Never knew why they offered that one.

Let's hope.

As bad as we fear this group, it was probably clear that even though everyone is needed, Washington was still only going to be a fill-in. Plus, based on the Zordich interview, I suspect he chewed out the guy big time and he probably decided now was the time to go.

Coaching changes can also affect people.

I mean, I mean I'd like to think of myself as very flexible co-worker, but there certainly are workplaces where I've transferred from, or found new employment altogether, because of unlikeable bosses and/or culture that I found incompatible. Gaining experience, you certainly begin to learn what environment and management styles work best for you.

You've got to take at least minimal care of yourself first, then you can take care of business and other people.

Coaching fit certainly matters.

Out especially with potential that we never got to see.  We will still be dominant on defense regardless.  Hope Mr. Washington is happy wherever he lands.

A few have mentioned it and Sam states in a Twitter response that he was no longer at CB. I'd say he wasn't liking the move.

Damn!, Had high hopes for him, hopefully all is well with his family situation and everything else, but hard to pretend this isn't a blow to depth at an area that could really use it.

Unless there is more to the story, such as a serious family issue etc... then my take is that any player who Quits in the Middle of Training Camp.... is better off Leaving.

Bye Keith.

Maybe the kid saw the handwriting on the wall and simply decided he would like to play football at another school. It's okay. The kid is just trying to better his situation, can you blame him? Wish him well and move on. I don't see any reason to kick'em in the rear as he walks out the door.
