What Should UM Do On The Coin Toss...
I have been day dreaming about us winning the toss, electing to receive, matriculating down the field for six, doing an onside kick, getting it and scoring again. I would always want to defer but this game I want us to make a statement right from the jump....thoughts??

Defer, always

Coach Carr, is that you?
September 2nd, 2010 at 10:00 PM ^
Well that's a stupid question.
*turns and walks away*

Tremendous.
September 2nd, 2010 at 10:45 PM ^
is absolute proof that you are, in fact, Lloyd Carr.
September 2nd, 2010 at 10:55 PM ^
It was a tremendous statement.

No question, Jim.

Well, back to you guys in the booth.

I want that extra possession to come in the second half.
September 2nd, 2010 at 9:50 PM ^
Receive if we win the toss. Given the state of our defense, I would want to set the tone of the game with the offense first; control the clock, march down the field, put 6 on the board.
September 2nd, 2010 at 9:54 PM ^
And IF we go 3 and out on that series?
Defer, the defense isnt supposed to be able so stop them anyway. If they score, its what everyone was expecting tbh, if they dont score it does a lot more for us confidence wise than a TD by the O.
Plus in the 2nd half you want the ball. If we are ahead it gives us a chance to start inserting the dagger. If we are behind it gives us the chance to come back.
Defer, hell maybe they will say kick on accident.
September 2nd, 2010 at 10:03 PM ^
And IF we go 3 and out on the next series after UConn scores? Then what? You hope that doesn't happen, but it might.
I still think we play to our teams strength right away. The more we keep their offense off the field and the sooner we can force UConn out of their game plan, the better for our team. IMO anyway.
September 2nd, 2010 at 9:50 PM ^
I really want to score first, but defering is typically the way to go.
September 2nd, 2010 at 10:46 PM ^
If not... Always score, never defer.
If yes... I say take the ball first and put the pressure on them.
September 2nd, 2010 at 9:50 PM ^
I concur, elect to receive if the option's there. Setting the tone not only for the game, but for the season that we're gonna smack some people in the mouth.

Always takes the ball if given the chance.
September 2nd, 2010 at 9:58 PM ^
We kicked first in every win last year, Id defer. (Also find it hard to believe that we lost all of those coin tosses)
September 2nd, 2010 at 10:44 PM ^
I guess I'm wrong. For some reason, I thought that he had the mindset that he wanted to set the tone on offense first. Must have been dreamin'. I'll keep my mouth shut from now on.
September 2nd, 2010 at 9:54 PM ^
always defer!
September 2nd, 2010 at 9:56 PM ^
matters much. Just head out there and hit someone.
September 2nd, 2010 at 9:58 PM ^
Screw UConn. We'll beat them either way. We don't need no charity.
September 2nd, 2010 at 9:58 PM ^
take the wind, even in OT, in the nfl...
(Win it, take the ball, activate Dilithium/Force, get ready for ND)
September 2nd, 2010 at 10:00 PM ^
Fuck it, onside with DR on the hot side. They will never see him. Pardon my french.
September 2nd, 2010 at 10:03 PM ^
Receive. We need to make them play from behind to keep them from controlling the clock.
September 2nd, 2010 at 10:04 PM ^
We need to elect to receive and score off the bat and get the crowd behind us, I've got a feeling that in order to win this game we are going to need all the momentum we can get..
September 2nd, 2010 at 10:29 PM ^
The crowd of 116,000. I'm calling it right now. I have sources who know that the attendance is at 116,000 as of two nights ago.
We shall see, how many to make the Big House shake!
GO BLUE!
September 2nd, 2010 at 10:06 PM ^
But I think in this one particular situation I want to see them make a statement and come out firing on all cylinders on offense and set the tone for the game and the season.
At the same time, it would give the young defense a big boost of confidence to know that the coach trusts them to make a stop from the very beginning.
September 2nd, 2010 at 10:08 PM ^
I would defer but we need a good start in the first, and such a pressure packed, game to open things up. And our offense is good. Our defense is bad.
September 2nd, 2010 at 10:09 PM ^
Take the wind.
September 2nd, 2010 at 10:10 PM ^
We're winning it all on Saturday.
Winning the battle in the trenches, winning the battle in the secondary. Hell, we'll win the coin toss* too.
*with the powers of DB's pimp hand

Send Denard out there for the toss. He'll use his speed to grab the coin, set it on the proper side, and place it on the ground in less than a millisecond.

I have been day dreaming about us winning the toss, electing to receive, matriculating down the field for six,
I do not think that word means what you think it means.

Stram became the first professional football coach to wear a microphone. Stram's recorded comments from that game have become classics: "Just keep matriculatin' the ball down the field, boys.", "How could all six of you miss that play?" "65 Toss Power Trap" and his assessment of the Vikings' ineffectual play: "You can't do that in OUR league!".

Matriculate - A term used originally used by Hank Stram, the coach of the Kansas City Chiefs in the 1960's during Superbowl IV, which describes consistently gaining yards and moving the football down the field against an opponents defense. The term is now used by a multitude of sports anchors when reviewing football highlights."Yeah let's just keep matriculatin' the ball down the field, boys!" - Hank Stram

We have to renovate Crisler and every little bit helps.
September 3rd, 2010 at 8:31 AM ^
I'm with ya.
September 2nd, 2010 at 10:47 PM ^
In my very unscientific opinion, it seems that scoring on the opening drive of the game happens way more often then scoring on the first drive of the 2nd half. I could be way off on that, but it seems that way to me.
September 2nd, 2010 at 10:56 PM ^
Receive. Emotions should be running high after Brock Mealer walk out and for first game of the year. RichRod and the team will be glad to focus on football, and could lead to a quick 6 points.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:01 AM ^
Kick. Put the defense out there, foaming at the mouth, with the crowd already up and screaming. Defense is more emotion; offense is technique.

But you should defer all the time anyway.
September 2nd, 2010 at 11:03 PM ^
then take the ball.
Besides, too many times last year we defered and the other team went down and scored. We start in the hole and then start the second half by going 3 and out.
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:32 AM ^
Yeah, that kind of bothered me a bit. I feel that this offense can pretty much score at will, and they should strike first and let the other teams play catch up.
September 2nd, 2010 at 11:12 PM ^
It will tell our D the staff has confidence in them. Stuff them 3 and out and the Big House will shake. We will take the punt to the house and Dee Hart will commit on the spot.
September 2nd, 2010 at 11:32 PM ^
... that's what you meant, right?
September 2nd, 2010 at 11:48 PM ^
If you want to make a statement you would kick uconn the ball.If you force a 3 and out that would give your defense some swagger that they need. Then we score as quick as possible and do the same thing all over again.I can't wait to watch us kill uconn.GO BLUE!!!
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:01 AM ^
Show some confidence in your whole team, both offense and defense......
September 3rd, 2010 at 12:04 AM ^
Defer to see how the D does
See if the D can actually stop anyone
