OT: Ohio - just plain miserable
Just saw an interesting list on Comcast news: the country's 22 most miserable cities. While I was in fervent disagreement with the #10 pick (Chicago), I couldn't help but love that Ohio has five in the top 22, and the #1 most miserable (Cleveland). I believe Ohio has more representatives on the list than any other state, just validating everything I've ever suspected about that awful place. FYI, Michigan had two, Flint and Detroit.
Nope.
I'm in Michigan this weekend for my cousin's wedding, and I had to drive through Ohio (and West Virginia, fml) yesterday. Everybody stared at me when I walked into Wendy's wearing my Michigan shirt. First time that's ever happened to me.
just jealous. You went to their fanciest resteraunt dressed better than they could ever be
brother, you dont know the half of it.
i live in northeast ohio but ill be damned if i wear less Michigan gear because of these idiots.
you cant go anywhere here wearing M gear without getting some type of remark from buckeye fans. ive seen it all.
just had a "Michigan sucks f****t" from a group of highschool kids for wearing my M hockey jersey the other day.
Michigan needs to get back to 90's style butt kickings of OSU so these animals go back into hibernation.
I also saw on local 4 news yesterday that Columbus, Oh is the #1 worst place in the US for bed bug infestations.
Bed bug: a flat, wingless, bloodsucking hemipterous insect.
Did they count Ohio State fans in the survey? That could explain the results.

Here are some reasonably important contributors to Michigan football that are/were from Ohio: Bo, Charles Woodson, Desmond Howard, Elvis Grbac, Mario Manningham...and the list could go on...Did I mention Bo?
I'm not sure what "miserable" was meant to mean, but if it means "suffering from the recession and the outsourcing of jobs," then yes, Ohio is pretty miserable. I encourage anyone who wants to make light of that to find some out-of-work factory workers down here and tell them how funny their situation is.
Note: To the extent that this is a dickish reply, I apologize.
Apparently people in Dayton have never heard of Detroit ... but seriously, this is clearly meant to be a joke.
Ease up, I know its hard to be from Ohio, but you're among friends here.
1) Please note that the folks you mentioned only contributed positively after they LEFT Ohio.
2) MIchigan has been hit as hard economically, if not harder, than Ohio. Folks in Michigan have just as much to be miserable about on that front. The difference, I think, is that no matter how bad things get, Michiganders can always remind themselves of the fact that they are not from Ohio, and it makes their day that much less miserable.
my thoughts exactly. UP is far less miserable than the toledo strip.
Those people in Ohio who lost their jobs were there by choice. They could have moved somewhere vastly better than Ohio, such as the D.R. Congo, Haiti, or Siberia.
But I live in Detroit and have a good friend that lives in Cleveland. Detroit is not as nice as Cleveland. I wish Detroit had a downtown like cleveland does.
Mean Cleveland did?
But I live in Cleveland and lived near Detroit while I was in Pharmacy School at Michigan. Detroit is far better than Cleveland, IMO.
You got your PharmD? Did you already have a BS/BA when you started the program? What do you do for work? I'm very curious because I'm considering pharmacy school.
Although I'm not who you asked, I will answer about Pharmacy School. I got my Pharm D after my original degree in Secondary Ed yielded me nothing but sub jobs.
After pharmacy school I worked retail for about 2 years then took a job at Parke-Davis -> Pfizer. I worked there for 8 years and when they decided to depart AA, I chose to stay. Now I work at a Hemophilia specialty pharmacy right downtown in AA.
Knowing I had this degree meant we didn't have to chase Pfizer to CT to keep a decent job. I highly recommend Pharmacy School - I think the opportunities are great.
This is great. Thank you very much mpharmd and Hemlock for sharing your experiences. There's tons of stuff going on in the field and so many opportunities, so it's good to get a better idea of what people do with a PharmD as well as what paths they took to get it.
Yes. I got BS in Biology at Michigan, went to Pharmacy school there and did my residency at UMHHS in Pharmacy IT. I work at the Cleveland Clinic as the pharmacy automation specialist (basically a mix between Pharmacy work and CS work).
The job is rewarding, the Clinic is a nice place to work, but Cleveland, as advertised, is quite miserable.
*criteria are
I negged myself for that
I have family in both cities and go to both cities regularly.
Detroit is way worse than Cleveland. Hands down! Besides the casinos (maybe), there isn't one thing in Detroit that is better than Cleveland (and Cleveland will be getting its own casinos soon).
I have a good friend from Detroit who was in Iraq for the war. He said that Baghdad reminded him of Detroit - a city with ruling class of citizens who hate another class of citizens. Also, apparently the suburbs of Baghdad are beautiful (much like Detroit). He had several other comparisons, but they were all quite striking.
Flint, what is that? I think my mom used to talk about that place. It's still around?
/sarcasm
I live in Cleveland and I'm happy as can be never want to leave this place. The people are not miserable here for the most part were proud to be from Cleveland. You can pull up every statistic you would like we may have a bad economy and Lebron stabbed us in the back, we're still living and loving life here in Cleveland. Ohio is a pretty wonderful place except for Ohio State's campus.
Probably one of the greatest videos I've seen in a while. The parallels are so on point.
(note: I have no clue how to embed a video and am taking a blind shot at it. The youtube link is here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7xlzLOZH5c )
Edit: I see it didn't work. If anyone could tell me how to embed this or take the link and embed it in their own post, the video is worth it. It may also ease the tension building between the Ohio natives and the normal people by providing some comic relif.
I wonder what strings the makers of that had to pull to get Stephen Hawking to do the voiceovers, though.
Ohio native, proud of it. And not miserable at all.
But, please, keep making fun of the state that provides your football team with some of its best players, historically and currently.
I would consider people who get their rocks off on lists like this and find them credible to begin with to be pretty miserable, regardless of where they're from.
"your football team"? your? not our?? I knew it!! I knew you were really a spy Jamiemac! I've never trusted your lines!
IIRC Jamiemac is an Indiana fan
Yes, I am an Indiana Alum and, obviously, fan.
But I was born a Michigan fan and remain so. I like to make fun of OSU, but not the state or its residents, who, despite their allegiances, are full of heart and good people.
I go to school in Flint and work in Detroit...
Alcohol helps numb the pain.
What section are you in at kettering. Im a B section student there. and kettering campus isnt that bad
+1 just because your avatar makes my day just a little bit better every time I see it.
Not sure what they were judging this on, but I spent two years in Detroit and I now live in Cleveland. Cleveland today is better than Detroit was five years ago, and I don't think Detroit has improved any since then. Not that cleveland is great - I would still put it in the top 5 on a miserable list, but it should definitely be behind Detroit.
I'd argue that Flint might be the most miserable city in the US. No offense to any natives, but Detroit and Cleveland can't come close to the epic despair in Flint town.
I give you a +1. Flint is terrrrrrible. I don't know why these local Clevelanders get so defensive when their city is ridiculed. Nothing wrong with being realistic about the quality of your city. I'll never deny where I came from, but I'm certainly not blind to how bad it is.
FYI, I'm pretty sure Flint was a top 5 most dangerous city while at the same time being a top 5 city for STD's. Stay classy Flint
Seriously, Detroit still has some stuff going for it. Flint is the reason I'm a Trotskyist.
At least lately we can rest assured that one weekend in late November we get to celebrate like Ted Nugent at a mullet-and-gun party.
great story, now could you please go back to an OSU board with the rest of your mullet and jorts wearing comrades.
Is this what we've sunk to? Yes, let's just ignore Michigan has the highest unemployment rate in the nation and laugh at Ohio!
Nevada passed Michigan in May.
Nevada 14.0%
Michigan 13.6%
A bunch of states have higher rates than Ohio's 10.7%.
I can say the UP alone makes Michigan 10000^10000 better than Ohio. Where can Ohio go for their in-state escape? Lake Erie????
disclaimer - Lake Erie has gotten better recently, and I hear Middle Bass Island is awesome, but compared to Lake Michigan/Huron/Superior, Ohio has no hope. Plus it smells like shit.
for this but things are hard in Ohio right now. I'm a true Michigan fan and I could truly give a shit less about anything Ohio pride related regarding Ohio State (even though I live in Columbus) but things in this state are not going uphill they are going down it. Jobs are hard to come by, unemployment benefits are now dissapearing because our state's budget is down some where near - 1.billion going into 2011 and workplaces are telling the unemployed not to even apply because they aren't accepting those applications at this time. I can't imagine with the auto crisis and bail out issues that Detroit has had in the past 2 years how bad Michigan's economy is right now but if you are just like me and currently out of work it's miserable everywhere.
The rest of the country considers us obnoxious, depressingly identical twins.
I didn't see the list but New Orleans is starting to become fairly miserable. It's been one awful year down here (minus the Saints winning the Super Bowl). The NASA facility that builds the fuel tank for the space shuttle will be closing and laying off all those workers, most of whom will probably leave. Then there's the oil spill which could have a large impact in the coming years. Then earlier this week Northrup announced they are closing their Naval Shipyard in New Orleans with all of the 5,000 workers being relocated to Mississippi or being laid off.
