OT: G.O.A.T Movies

Submitted by MichiganFan1984 on
So last night my family and I got bored because the basketball game was a blowout so we watched Forrest Gump. This in my opinion is the best movie ever made. It also led to the discussion of what are the best movies ever made. So I’m curious what are your top 3 greatest movies of all time. My top 3 in order are 1. Forrest Gump. 2. Saving Private Ryan. 3. The Dark Knight. Im basing this on the following criteria, the movies should make you think about life, entertain the heck out of you and make you appreciate the characters from a real world perspective. So my questions are.. do you think my 3 are legit or am I crazy? And... what are your top 3 in order. Enjoy the rest of the weekend and hopefully this is the last crap weekend of weather for a while.

1. The Godfather 1/2 (I realize this is two movies, I'm a cheater) 2. Unforgiven 3. Hmmm, maybe Shawshank? I can definitely see why that one got so many mentions in this thread.

I cannot tell if you are joking. Contact is one of the most incomprehensibly terrible sci-fi movies I’ve ever seen. Oh fucking busey blows up the machine? Don’t worry Japan’s got you covered with one they’ve been developing “secretly” for no fucking reason. Oh and what the fuck was Mathew maconahey’s role in that film? I haven’t seen it in ten years for good reason but I’m going to leave the bar right now to go hate it some more.

The entire movie was an allegory for the debate of faith vs science. Dr Arraway is convinced that nothing is real unless it can be scientifically measured (she even says at one point "I believe that if I can see it and touch it then it is real), while McConaughey is telling her to have faith in something she cannot see. In the end, she goes on this fantastic journey to another world in the blink of an eye and all she has to testify is her own account of it, without any empirical evidence, which convinces her that there is more to life than she'll ever be able to understand. I'll bet you didn't pick up on that theme the first time you saw the movie.

- The Pianist. Putting the Roman Polanski debate aside, this is one of my favorite movies. Strikes the soul, beautifully filmed, loaded with humanity, and based on a true story to boot. - Interstellar. It’s a movie that I can pick up and watch any time and not be bored. Beautiful soundtrack, great cast, exciting story with excellent effects. - Raiders of the Lost Ark. Again, one of those movies I can pick up and watch any time and never be bored. See the list for Interstellar, all apply here. - Adaptation. I consider myself a writer and this is the ultimate writer’s movie. And a Nicolas Cage movie where his acting really shines! Loaded with unconventional humor including jokes that don’t land until you watch the movie a second time, it’s always a fun ride. Honorable mentions: Most of the movies mentioned above, LOTR trilogy, and my go-to action flicks, T2 and Predator.

yep. having a strained relationship with my own father, and then entering fatherhood on my own, I loved the plotline.  "When people ask me if Michael Sullivan was a good man, or if there was just no good in him at all, I always give the same answer. I just tell them... he was my father."

I always felt like they should have quit while they were ahead.   (I haven't actually seen that, but will check it out.)

Great WWII movie is "Is Paris Burning."   (1966)    It's all about the French Underground and they mix in a lot of real footage of the Germans leaving Paris in WWII.  You have a whole new respect for the French at the end of it.   (Note:  Paris is Burning is a completely different movie and the titles are easy to confuse.)

Actually visited years ago during “River Kwai Week”. Was awesome. Cheesy reenactment of an aerial assault on river boats. Guys bursting into flames and falling into the river. Speakers blaring machine gun sounds. Pretty cool. We mostly went for the train ride experience but soent a few days on the rivers exge. The heat and jungle depicted in the movie hits home even more after a visit to S E Asia.

I think you're crazy, but I applaud you putting yourself out there. I think Forrest Gump was a starry eyed bio of the baby boom generation, so as a non-baby-boomer, i would say it was a great movie just not greatest ever. my faves are the Usual Suspects and the Godfather, and I have to admit I love every single Tarantino movie.
