OT: G.O.A.T Movies

Submitted by MichiganFan1984 on
So last night my family and I got bored because the basketball game was a blowout so we watched Forrest Gump. This in my opinion is the best movie ever made. It also led to the discussion of what are the best movies ever made. So I’m curious what are your top 3 greatest movies of all time. My top 3 in order are 1. Forrest Gump. 2. Saving Private Ryan. 3. The Dark Knight. Im basing this on the following criteria, the movies should make you think about life, entertain the heck out of you and make you appreciate the characters from a real world perspective. So my questions are.. do you think my 3 are legit or am I crazy? And... what are your top 3 in order. Enjoy the rest of the weekend and hopefully this is the last crap weekend of weather for a while.

Blazing Saddles story: Many years ago I began playing historic baseball at Greenfield Village. It being my first game, I was being very conscientious about playing the game in the proper 19th Century manner, using only the period-correct terminology, and so forth.

Just as the game is about to start, the museum clock chimed noon. And my buddy playing first base turned around to me in right field and yelled at the top of his voice:

"Hey! The sherrif is near!"

Of course I lost it, but what was funnier was that three spectators standing down the right field line heard him and cracked up too. So they spent the next two innings yelling movie lines at us:

"Candygram for Mongo!"

"'Scuse me while I whip this out!"

"Hey - where all the white women at?"

It was hilarious, although I doubt The Village would have thought so. (They encourage us to connect with the customers, but I doubt that's what they had in mind.)

Yeah, they're all up there. HBP is my favorite, but only in retrospect. Deathly Hallows 2 is awesome but I can't help the irony of the HBP rewatch. My wife read all the books as a kid but I wasn't a reader back then. She made me watch them all when we were dating, and I just finished reading all the books a few months ago.

Dune is my favorite Sci fi book, possibly due to being maybe the only sci fi i've read. But it doesn't have a good movie adaption. I love Lynch, but his does not age well at all.

The director of Arrival has one coming out in the next couple of years. I am very eagerly awaiting this one. He's said he wants it to be Star Wars for adults, which is appropriate since SW ripped off Dune pretty thoroughly.

Love The Matrix. I refused to see it for years because I generally can’t stand Keanu Reeves. My brother finally forced me to see it and now if it’s ever on, I can’t turn it off.

Pulp Fiction is one of my favorites . Also, one time I was behind Harbaugh in line at the movie theater ticket line. When he went to pay he pulled out his wallet and sure enough it was the Bad Mother Fucker wallet from Pulp Fiction. Becuase of course Harbaugh would have that wallet.

I don't remember the Limey particularly well, but all of those Old Man Tough Guy movies are fun.  Payback (Gibson), Taken (Liam Neeson), John WIck (Keanu), anything with Charles Bronson, etc.

One that I don't remember very well, but loved was Sexy Beast staring Ben Kingsley.   The whole time I remember thinking "Ghandi is a bad mother F----er!"

The Princess Bride - most quotable film ever

It’s a Wonderful Life - best film by one of the best actors ever, Jimmy Stewart

Godfather 1/2 - perfect storytelling in every respect

Miracle - best sports movie

Blazing Saddles - funniest movie I’ve ever seen

Black Hawk Down - best combat movie

So many others could be named...

Great movie, and one of the best written movies I've ever seen. The scenes between Damon and Williams are fantastic.

And the film's even more impressive when you consider how young Damon and Affleck were when they did it.

But here’s the 3 off the top of my head that I didn’t see listed in my limited scrolling (no particular order):

Rounders
Interstellar (I lied about particular order, this movie is the GOAT)
Return of the King (LOTR 3)

Pretty good effort by most on this topic.  I think you can tell a lot about a person by their favorite movies.  so...

Godfather.............perfect casting, perfect story, perfect performance by Al Pacino going from college boy Mikey, to the Don himself.

One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest- There has never been a more hateable character than Nurse Rachett.  Plus Nicholson's play by play commentary to the blank TV screen when she won't let them watch the series.

Bridge Over the River Kwai-Last extended action scene where the water has gone down over night.........'You've got to do it boy........you've got to do it now!......'Keel im!"  Plus the victory in the battle of wills by Guiness, and him going out to face his troops.........

Close, but not quite there.....

Pulp Fiction-Switching up the sequences, and the dialogue.  Groundbreaking stuff.

Casablana-Rick is the MAN!

Great Escape-no one has been cooler before or since, than Steve McQueen trying to escape on the motorcycle.

Can't believe nobody has mentioned it. And don't forget caddyshack. 80% of this blog knows those movies almost by heart. O

XM, you are my brother from another mother as my top 3 are:

  1. Trading Places - clear #1 for me!!!
  2. Animal House, and
  3. Caddyshack

I am not into serious films as life is serious enough as it is and I look to films for entertainment and to make me laugh.  Oh yeah, the original Star Wars is definitely on the short list.
