Can I ask what our rooting guide is for today?

Submitted by jbrandimore on
I’m not one that cares so much as to the Kenpom ratings but more who we think we would have the best matchup with in a theoretical NC game. I’ve seen Duke play a couple times, and their zone does worry me, but I have never seen Kansas once. The 4 guard thing seems ok to me, but I haven’t seen them, so I welcome your opinions. As for the other game, I know Brunson on Nova is great - but I have faith in Simpson being able to neutralize him. Am I crazy? I have only seen Texas Tech dismantle Purdue, but without Haas, that didn’t seem like an accurate gauge of their abilities.

I want Texas Tech and Kansas although a Michigan - Villanova title game should it happen has the potential to be an instant classic. Beat Loyola.

Now we have to consult message boards to find out whom we need to cheer???

I'm rooting for Loyola's mascot, Gramma Tootie, to accidentally book a flight to Ulan Bator next Saturday.

You know, there's certainly no harm in the question being raised, and if you disagree with the prevailing opinion, by all means speak up, but try not to be a fuckwit in the process. Just a friendly tip.

Nova is way more than just Jalen Brunson. That team is scary good. I think they are the team Michigan wants to face the least, followed by Duke and then a toss-up of Texas Tech and Kansas. TT is tenacious on the defensive end whereas this is one of Self's worst KU teams in terms of defense (and offensive balance). KU may have more raw talent than TT but the Red Raiders have that nasty D and their one downfall (excessive fouling) isn't something Michigan is built to exploit what with their poor FT shooting.

So, either of Texas Tech or KU is the preferred opponent.

I don't think we match up well with Duke at all, and I think overall Villanova has played the best basketball of anyone this season. We're rooting for the massive upset in Texas Tech, and Kansas. Would much rather face Bill Self than Coach K in a title game.

I don’t give a fuck honestly. It’s gonna be one as long as we beat Loyola Chicago. Just one game. We need to play hot offensive and tight defense and I think we can beat just about anyone in the country

I hope so I’m just saying don’t take them lightly they beat Florida in Gainesville in the regular season and only have 5 losses the whole year they know how to win. Let’s show sister Jean how Beilein prepares for basketball go blue!!

Not Villanova.  We do not want to play the mirror match with more talented dudes on the other side.  We are at our best when there are contrasting styles and the opponent has a big who is not comfortable on the perimeter.  Nova's is.

Duke's 2-3 is better than A&M, but you can see a world where we shoot them out of it (i.e. Thursday night, rather than last night) or attack it well with Matthews at the free throw line.

I fully admit I do not understand Kansas, every time I watch them they look incredibly vulnerable but then win.  Bunch of shooters and a super athletic big.

Texas Tech feels like a collection of athletic dudes who run an inefficient offense but are winning.  Good at defense for sure (we keep trading back #3 and #4 on Ken Pom after every game), but a team that seems to revel in passing up threes for long twos is a team I want to play.

Agree. I'd rather not play a team that can outshoot us even when we're shooting well. From what I've seen of Kansas, they'd be a decent match. They don't have a ton of size and seem to rely on driving to score in the paint. That's the type of opponent we could get ahead of by taking care of the ball and hitting our average from 3. Villanova could give us a Purdue-like matchup where we hit 50% of threes, but they hit 60%.

Agree. I watch a ton of the Big East. Jay Wright is a strong coach, with some great concepts and adjustments, and a very, very good roster. He’s not a cheater, or scumbag, or whatever. I would rather not see Nova in the final. Allintime’s avatar screams scumbag though, with his/her posts lacking some basketball basics.

I hate Duke and hope they lose, but it would be interesting to see our more experienced team dismantle their freshmen dominated team in the Finals. The opposite of the Fab 5's matchup with them.

I know we can win any game, but if we have an off-day and lose? I do not want it to be against Duke. I hate them with a passion and I am stuck in ACC country. I would never hear the end of it. I hate those fuckers more than almost anybody.

My bracket has Michigan v Villanova in the title game. As much as I’d like to see that, I’d rather not play Villanova. I think Tx Tech would be our greatest chance at a championship.

EDIT: and that would make it three tourney games vs teams from one state, in this case Texas.  I wonder if that has ever happened before?  Not that it is of any significance.

I work with a couple dookies and a Carolina grad. I made a collective bet with them that Michigan would go farther than both. personally I hate Duke, so I'd like to see them lose today. I'll win my bet. plus all 3 jumped at the bet like they are so much better. lol. my opinion is that Michigan can win it all this year, but gotta get there first. beat the teams in front of you.

Would also be a home game for Kansas if we're being honest with ourselves. Besides Kentucky, they travel better than any basketball fanbase and it's within driving distance for the bulk of their fans, plus they have much larger alumni bases in Texas than any of the other schools besides TT obviously.

TT and KU for sure. Won't happen though. I could stomach a loss to Villanova in the NCG better than another one to Duke, even though I think Villanova is probably the best team and thus a tougher opponent. Although that's probably offset by matchup issues against Duke. So I guess in summary, Fuck Duke!

I do not want to play duke solely based on the fact that the refs are extremely bias towards them in any game they play. I would much rather play Villanova even tho they look unstoppable right now

They’re all good teams on that ride of the bracket, bring higher seeded than any of our opponents on our side. We’re in the privileged position to be able to worry about ourselves and out immediate opponent first, and to have the confidence that we can take on whomever else they put in font of us when it comes to it.

I’d rather see Texas Tech and Kansas advance but I’m banking on the other two.

Villanova would be brutal with our good their offense is. And Duke is...well....they’re Duke. That program is built to win these types of games. It’s in their DNA.

with Michigan winning, yes largely based on heart.  Would not be surprised to see Duke there.  Sister Jean will pray for well officiated semi final with nobody getting hurt I'm sure we are all for that.  Loyola is a great story, but I think college basketball needs more Coaches like Coach Beilein and if the team manages to play nearly as well as they did vs. A & M, they can do it.  So much growth, so much chemistry, so much defense and improved rebounding.  Been amazing to watch.  Beating highly touted MSU twice without a home game speaks volumes for how this team can get up for big games.

Then Michigan and Texas Tech face off in the finals. That way I win my bracket pool no matter who wins the finals
