Big Ten Tournament Bracket official - Michigan the 5 seed

Submitted by oriental andrew on

We already knew Michigan was the 5 seed since Nebraska won their game against PSU.

Now that Iowa has beaten Northwestern, the final pieces of the puzzle have fallen into place. Michigan will play the winner of Iowa vs. Illinois on Thursday around 2:30pm ET.

If we win, we go on to play Nebraska. Then it's whoever wins the 1 seed game (msu, btw).

EDIT:

And in a weird bit of parallelism (or something), Michigan women are the 6 seed in their tournament, also playing on the second day. Could potentially play Illinois (if they beat psu), then higher-seeded Nebraska on the third day, and potentially msu in the semifinals (if #10 msu women somehow upset #7 indiana and #2 Maryland - okay, it's a long shot).

Anyway, here's to the ladies and their success in their BTT also! GO BLUE!

PSU was one of the hottest team until they played Michigan.  That Senior Day loss seemed to really flatten them out for their game against Nebraska.  Not having Mike Watkins really hurt as the Huskers drove to the rim at will knowing there was no shot blocker waiting.

Sparty has a chance to extend the streak of 1 seeds getting shut out of the big ten tourney to three years. No 1 seed has won a big ten tourney game since 2015, courtesy of the maize and blue

So hear me out, I know a lot of you don't like it. So this season has anywhere from 2 to 10 games left. This BTT is important, but the NCAA tourney is what really matters. I think this team clearly started to hit their stride at the OSU game. I felt like this team could've really used another week (like normal years) to get even more momentum and guys knowing/playing their roles flawlessly.

We need to think big picture, getting another game to give Simmons a chance as backup pg. and play like he did Saturday, Livers another game after injury, Poole in his bigger role of 20+ minutes, Matthews returning to form, another game for MAAR to wear the goggles and take over this team (half joking).

Short term this game doesn't help with seeding (can only hurt) or perhaps the 3 days in 3 games vs. Msu. But I do think it could be just another game where we take a big step forward and gain even more confidence. College sports is a TON momentum & confidence.

If we face MSU they will be desperate for revenge. If we lose there is not a ton of downside for us, they are cheaters after all. If we win though, it’s absolutely humiliating for Izzo! To have his highest paid team lose to us twice!

Hell, face them twice is nothing. It's not like the last game against them was anything. Michigan went into their place against a full forced team, the #1 team I might add and kicked their ass. Absolutely kicked their ass. This next match will be easier.

Michigan gets both the corn-worship and sharty on neutral courts this time. These boys will rock them!

I don't really have any problem with having to play the extra BTT game.

Between the end of the Big Ten regular season and the start of the NCAAs, we will only play 3 games at most in almost 3 weeks.

That's crazy.

Beacuse Delaney absolutely had to have the BTT in New York, and MSG was only available this week.  So he compressed the B1G regular season schedule to fit it in, and left a 10 day delay before the NCAA tourney starts.  This is all Delaney, and all for money.

Delaney is the B1G's biggest problem.

He's the biggest idiot of any commissioner and I'm pretty sure he's an OSU shill. I wish he just picked a different venue and had the final played the Saturday before Selection Sunday. MSG is nice, but to make so compromises to play there makes no sense.

Madison Square Garden is unavailable to the Big Ten during Championship Week because, of course, MSG is already hosting the Big East Tournament that week!

So we intentionally and knowingly just made our conference tournament a clear second-fiddle to an inferior conference. Why? No idea. Poster above says money, but I don't know the details, nor do I understand how that would be the case. And frankly, I don't care.

Usually, the Big Ten is the last to wrap up on Sunday before the selection show, giving us the marquee conference tourney final as the selection committee is finalizing its field.  Instead, this year we'll be finishing up with the likes of the Missouri Valley and Atlantic Sun conferences on March 4th and the B1G will be a distant memory as the rest of the nation enjoys one of the best basketball weekends of the year.

All so we can play at MSG, as if anyone gives a shit.

I only said money because of the advertising revenue that playing in NY City will undoubtedly bring.  I had no idea that the Big East tourney was being held there next weekend.  Now it's more of a travesty than I originally thought!

Now I need to drink some Pepto.  (Which doesn't seem right considering that username...)  Thanks?

We won’t be winning the conference tournament this year- and that’s fine. Win a game, maybe two- but stay healthy and sharp for the dance. That’s all that matters

When you guys play a complete game, you can beat anyone in the nation. Your coach is a proven winner in tournaments as well. Definitely hoping you guys (and us) meet Saturday. I'd rather have a tough team like UM before the NCAA's than an ok team like Nebraska.

Lose to Illinois/Iowa: 7-seed
Lose to Nebraska in quarterfinals: 6-seed
Get to BTT semifinal or finals: 5-seed
Win BTT: 4-seed

Michigan sits right on the 5/6 line at the moment, but the first game of the BTT only offers downside. I feel strongly that a 7-seed is the floor, but also that a 3-seed is too far to climb without a lot of help from other teams. I think the ideal spot for Michigan will be a 4/5/6 seed in a weak West regional.

And an extra week to practice free throws can't hurt, right???

is actually 6. I agree a 4 seed is probably the ceiling. Most likely you guys are a 4/5 seed and not a matchup a weak #1 like Xavier or Kansas would be looking forward to having. Also, please win 2 games so we can rematch you guys!

I usually root for as many B1G teams to make the tournament, but I hope Nebraska is one-and-done and goes to the NIT.  I don't hate the team...well I hate their "bench mob"...or I hate BTN for focusing on them after each made basket.  But their schedule was Charmin soft.

Nebraska basketball and Wisconsin football got a huge gift from the scheduling geeks in Chicago this season.

But you play who's on the schedule. Definitely agree top 4 includes your team. All the metrics have UM ahead of Nebraska. Also, obviously I'm more fearful of a team that beat mine by 10 at the Breslin than a team we beat by 29. TL;DR They should have said top 4 seeded and not best 4, because UM is one of the best 4 teams in the conference.

I think Michigan has a much betterchance of beating OSU than Purdue.  It'd be nice to be 2-1 vs them on the season.  Purdue, I'm not sure if Michigan can beat if they have another performance like they did the last two outings.  It would be nice to pick up a win against them.

It'd be nice to run Nebraska out of the building and leave no doubt who the better team is this year.  Sparty will be very tough.  They will be looking for revenge.  I think that game will depend on how the officials call the game.  If they call a "let em play" type fest, then I'm not too sure.  If they call it with lighter fouls then I think it goes for Michigan (Note toughness and hacking are not the same thing). It'd be great to ge their record to 50% against the top 5 teams (who they only played one time each and only one on the road, just to emphasize again).

but I don't hate getting a warmup game in before playing Nebraska provided that Michigan wins against Illinois or Iowa. Give them a little bit to get their tournament legs going. The issue being the round after against Sparty is a rough one.
