Dantonio: I've Done Nothing Wrong and I'm Not Retiring

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on

Dantonio just read a statement at the Breslin Center saying, of course, that he did nothing wrong, that he's a great guy, and that he runs a clean program. He then took a direct question, asking if he was retiring, and he said no.

Did not address any specific allegations in the ESPN story, of course.

Pride comes before the fall. Dantonio still thinks he's in the "pride" phase.

I’m a homer but not a blind one - I know perfectly well that some of our athletes have done bad things. I had a class with Ray Jackson (the football one) and then he stopped coming, because it turned out he and two teammates beat the crap out of someone, for which they were arrested and booted off the team. But your story’s just a bit too convenient - right when people are bashing MSU’s coaches for covering up sexual assault, incredibly you have this 36-year-old story, about Michigan’s head coach personally committing that very crime! And of course it was covered up, and you waited all these years to finally share it... If you’d just said you once saw some U-M player getting away with something, OK sure. But you tried to swing for the fences.

I mean...if you're the guys or gals that inherit this dumpster fire...are you keeping anyone who has been credibly accused of ignoring sex crimes? I don't give a damn if it were Gandhi, if you inherit a program in scandal, and Gandhi's employees had committed 16 rapes with little a penalty, he's the first person to go.

As I stated they should be gone...but if you think a new AD is going to come in and clean house you’re fooling yourself. Izzo is the king at MSU, no newbie is coming in there and firing him. Otherwise, they’ll be cleaning out their office soon too! The best hope for any AD is that you try and convince them to retire on their own terms. Hollis might have been the only guy that could’ve let them go and survived.

I just talked to someone who lives in East Lansing and worked at MSU. They said it was 10 times worse than PSU because PSU was only Sandusky. The newspapers are full of stories about the scandals, but no one they know is talking about it. Spartans want this to go away, but it is going to continue until Izzo and Dantonio are dealt with.

This post beat me to it, but I posted something similar. Very, very bad move by Dantonio and MSU. His answer to the "are you retiring?" question with "absolutely not, I'm here for Spartan Nation" sounded way too much like the kind of institution-over-people thing that got them in this hot water to begin with. Maybe everyone at MSU should just shut up and listen for a while?

I was wondering if I was too biased in thinking his statement was a bad idea. Then I read RCMB, where they were all saying "he nailed it" and "finally someone stood up for MSU" and "I'd run through a wall for that man." Then I knew for sure I was right and he had come off wrong, and would be gone sooner rather than later. He gone...

What I am waiting for is what will eventually come, whether it's from someone at MSU now, or someone that takes over after everyone of significance is gone. It will start something like...

"Massive mistakes were made, and a lot of lives were ruined. We all share blame in that, and those most to blame are now gone..."

You know, I thought MSU fans had pretty good reaction and response to the entire situation so far. But I was talking to my sister about it today, and I said that while I give them credit for reacting with outrage, it's pretty easy to throw fire at administration and non-revenue sports figures. It'll be interesting to see how they react when it's their heroes Dantonio and Izzo under fire. Suddenly, it's a witch hunt. Isn't that interesting how their moral outrage only extends to the point that it doesn't affect their football or basketball programs.

Izzo and Dantonio have to go...I doubt ESPN is getting this report that wrong.  People don't think logically about things that they love, nobody loved Simon...but Izzo and Dantonio the fans will be irrational about.

With that said, I hope we never go through anything this bad at UofM, but if we ever do, let us react with moral clarity.

That situation was not handled properly by RichRod, Hoke, or UM. Period.

That being said, that ONE situation has been the crutch for every Spartan fan since. It's as though because that happened, every athelete at MSU can sexually assault every woman they want, and no one can say anything...because Gibbons. Because Gibbons...

Exactly. Every Spartan with a Twitter account has mentioned Gibbons. I wouldnt be surprised if his name was trending in the state right now. They think because he had that quote about brunette girls that somehow equates to Izzo and Dantonio's dumb statements. Also anyone of any power involved with the Gibbons situation was fired/left...AD, 2 head coaches, and we now have a different president (Mary Sue wasn't fired). So if we follow the Sparty Gibbons logic, they are in essence arguing Dantonio should be fired.

Could the Enos departure have been precipitated by advance knowledge that this story was going to break and anyone associated with MD was persona non grata?
