Dantonio: I've Done Nothing Wrong and I'm Not Retiring

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on

Dantonio just read a statement at the Breslin Center saying, of course, that he did nothing wrong, that he's a great guy, and that he runs a clean program. He then took a direct question, asking if he was retiring, and he said no.

Did not address any specific allegations in the ESPN story, of course.

Pride comes before the fall. Dantonio still thinks he's in the "pride" phase.

Dantonio made a deal with the devil. That’s the only way I can explain his success against Michigan. Mostly in the last three years. Yes he’s a good coach, but for 2015 and 2017 to go the way they did....

I don’t know what Dantonio did or didn’t do. What he covered up or didn’t. For all I know he didn’t cover up anything. All I know is that he had to have paid a steep price for the deal he made. And sooner or later, the devil always comes to collect his due.

my Buddies’ theory. Dantonio made the deal when his heart stopped and he flat lined. Izzo and Marinucci made it in Iron Mountain on a cold day in their shitty NMU trailer. Lol.

A “Deal with the Devil” is actually a cultural motif or a metaphor for exactly what is happening at MSU. And it almost always ends with the person going to hell or losing the one thing they truly deserve or love.

Fitting analogy.

I would like to see Izzo go full Nick Nolte in Blue Chips.  Go to the press conference, admit that he had sexual predators on his team, and quit right on the spot, just like Nolte did in Blue Chips.

He’s essentially saying all the women lied?

“Did nothing wrong” is Semantics but We know Dantonio is lying because it was reported that he investigated and adjudicated rapes himself.

Serious question for MGoMDs: is being under this kind of stress (in addition to head football coach stress) really bad for someone who has already had a heart attack? Or do meds pretty much keep everything in check?

I’m sure Dantonio handles allegations of sexual crimes with the same level of care, seriousness, and severity that he applies to all other player misconduct.

All Dantonio is saying is that he met his minimum legal requirements and pushed the paperwork down the line. He is still at fault for the character of his team.

According to the ESPN story, they are reporting 16 football players accused of sexual assault over 11 years. I would like to see how 1.5 players per year, on a team with 100 elite-ish athletes, compares to the rest of football/basketball programs. If I had to guess I would say it would be similar to the national average, which means the football program should not get swept up in the nassar whirlwind.

be surprised if both Izzo and Dantonio survive this, especially Dantonio.....I think more will get peeled back and more info that is bad is going to keep coming out....Especially with all the new turnover.....

doing the "wrong thing" in these situations (sexual assualt); and deflecting and rationalizing is just not going to cut it - and that goes for before, during and after (the act).

That's a doozy of a directed question:

"There have been erroneous rumors that your are planning on resigning, is that absolutely untrue?"

Let me just tell you in my question that I already know the answer.

Just saw a bit of the OTL report. Wow. And Dantonio's denial. Wow. I love sports, especially college sports, but we need to stop deifying athletes, and allowing them to think they are above reproach. It has to begin with coaches; they have to be the adults in the room and be held accountable. It should start in high school (or earlier), and there needs to be zero tolerance.

Team allegiance aside, that statement was bad. Really bad. It's like Dantonio isn't even aware that the biggest sexual assault scandal in the history of sports is unfolding right down the hall from him. No condolences for the victims. No indication of wanting to help with the very long healing process. No commitment to be a leader and be open to any investigation to get to the bottom of any issues with the football program or any other team to make sure it never happens again. Instead his reaction is along the lines of, "How dare you question ME?" "I have done NOTHING wrong." "You have no business looking into MY program." Defiance and arrogance are no way to confront the brutal facts in front of them right now. I thought Izzo handled his post-game presser better. None of this is good but if I were the new AD (or whoever is incharge) I would consider firing Dantonio based on that statement alone because that shows me he has no interest in doing what will be needed to repair MSU's shattered reputation.

Dantonio’s defiance and smugness will not serve him well going forward. He is being accused of poor judgment, a lack of transparency and placing football over ethics - that doesn’t get alleviated but actually elevated by saying “I’ve been advised to not answer questions” and tersely answrrping 2 questions with defiant answers. What press conference will not include questions about violations or past events? No national reporter will interview him without this topic, so I expect MSU coaches won’t get time on major outlets. Payne was released last night, Walton is now suspended, Appling is in jail, King/Corley/Vance trial will raise the topic in the near future, and more claims/lawsuits are coming. Victims will get emboldened and lawyers will pounce. A systemic issue requires a systemic solution.

If they handled criminal sexual complaints 'in-house' then they failed to report. When all the shit comes down, this will have to be dealt with, and anything less than resignation will not be enough.
