Speight delays transfer decision
SIAP, but according to the Detroit News, Wilton is going to wait a few months before deciding on his graduate destination:

TB12 is probably going to retire after this season, New England can draft him and he can compete with Mr. Hoyer for the starting QB position right away?

Plus Belichick is going to sign Garoppolo as a free agent because that would be the most Belichick thing to do ever.

where they said the team is a mess and everyone hates everyone?
Do you know that Oakland is always in play?
The HC that just set the record for most playoff wins... is going to be an OC?

The Niners will simply tag Jimmy GQ if they can't come to a long-term deal.
January 22nd, 2018 at 8:59 AM ^
Tag and trade.
The only way it could happen and its super slim. Jimmy G likes shanahan's offense and it will probably be nice not to play in the shadow of the greatest QB of all-time. He would have to want to come back to New England for there to be a chance.

I thought it was funny, and rather than being some kind of sarcastic slight against Wilton, it is more a sarcastic slight against all the stress mongering rumors surrounding New England on a day when the "old" GOAT may not have played due to a hand injury, but he did, and he won.

Eh, the article sounded like he IS going, just delaying where he will go.
January 22nd, 2018 at 7:08 AM ^
Enrolled in school, so I don't think he would be eligible to play at Michigan. He graduated. The article said he is, and will comtinue to workout in California until he makes a decision. I guess it's possible, but really not likely.
January 22nd, 2018 at 8:09 AM ^
He'll have to enroll somewhere in the fall if he's going to play. For me, the larger point is that he is missing spring practice. That's got to hurt his chances wherever he goes. It doesn't seem the best way to go into his final season.

January 22nd, 2018 at 11:43 AM ^
missing spring didn't hurt Rudock.
It would be beneficial to enroll early sure, but with all the staff changes still on going it is reasonable to wait and see what staffs come out of spring practice looking for a QB.

January 22nd, 2018 at 12:20 PM ^
I did. Grant Perry could have used those spring reps.
January 22nd, 2018 at 1:11 PM ^
I did. And no other QB on the roster would have performed better. O'Korn, Morris, Speight, all would have been disasters.
January 22nd, 2018 at 1:18 PM ^
Point is, Rudock would have performed better against Utah had he been there in the spring. His timing with recievers and within the playbook made a huge jump midseason. Assumption is he would have hit this eariler if he had the spring and summer to practice with the other players.
January 22nd, 2018 at 2:23 PM ^
That would have been better for Michigan. But Rudock won the starting job without being here for spring...
January 22nd, 2018 at 5:45 PM ^
January 23rd, 2018 at 9:41 AM ^
Of course it would.
But missing those spring and summer reps didn't prevent him from winning the starting job.
And statistically Rudock had the 2nd best season for a QB in Michigan history and he still got drafted late. With the NFL so driven by "measureables" I doubt he could have improved his stock much.
January 22nd, 2018 at 12:19 PM ^
He still won a starting job and so could Speight if he finds the right home. Doesn't mean it's a desirable path to take. Rudock didn't have a choice as he didn't graduate until the spring.
January 23rd, 2018 at 9:47 AM ^
How did it hurt Rudock?
If I recall the UFR two of his three picks were due to a bad route run by a true freshman slot receiver. And then he ended up having the 2nd best statistical season by a QB in Michigan history. He went from probably going to med school, to being a backup QB in the NFL and probably will be given a chance to start as the Lions will probably trade him for a 3rd or 4th round pick. Not bad for a guy cut by Ferentz.
It is clear that Speight doesn't want to "compete" for a job. He wants to walk in and be the guy day 1. Waiting for the summer probably gives more clarity as new coaching staffs go through spring and evaluate the talent they have and decide if they need an upgrade.

to play spring ball anyway? Give the neck some more time to rest, rehab, make the right choice about where to go.

Thought for sure he was headed to UCLA after seeing all those IGs he posted from LA. Reunite with Jed, Rosen leaving early -- it made sense.

schools aren't exactly knocking down his door to sign him and he's hoping to garner more interest as time goes on.

That's a good point - may very likely be the reason.
January 22nd, 2018 at 10:38 AM ^
I mean, they had a QB competition this past offseason and the results were Speight #1 and Peters #3. Peters probably never sees the field this year if Speight doesn't get knocked out
January 22nd, 2018 at 11:40 AM ^
Speight regressed this year while Peters improved. Would a tipping point have occurred in 2017 where Peters moved ahead of Speight? We'll never know but I'm pretty sure that Peters would win a head to head competition this spring. And that's without taking into account the preference for a young player with upside who will be back next year over a player in his final year.
January 22nd, 2018 at 1:17 PM ^
I'm not disagreeing with your overall assesment, but you have to be squinting pretty hard to say Peters improved.
Whatever was going on with the coaching staff took its toll on all the QB's.
January 22nd, 2018 at 2:13 PM ^
He improved....until the bowl game.
"Whatever was going on with the coaching staff took its toll on all the QB's. "
Ain't that the truth. I just hope the problem can be quickly identified and fixed.
January 22nd, 2018 at 6:49 PM ^
He gained invaluable experience. The game plan for the bowl was a disaster. It was especially frustrating because the OSU game plan was excellent and fit the QB's talents. The bowl game plan set the team up for failure.
January 23rd, 2018 at 1:39 AM ^
called for him to throw a terrible INT across his body on 3rd and goal?!
That's a play a seventh grader knows to throw away. Lot of other terrible decisions made too.
January 23rd, 2018 at 1:33 AM ^
like early in the season because he wrestled the job away from O'Korn? Because he didn't improve while he actually played. He had three meh games against bad teams, had a meh half against Wisconsin and then had a terrible bowl game.
These are his passer ratings:
Rutgers: 169
Minnesota: 123 (just 56 yards on 13 attempts!!!)
Maryland: 154
Wisconsin: 123
SC: 72
I don't see much improvement there, even when adjusting for opponents. Tough to spin it that way.
