Winovich was an All Big Ten player to PFF after sharing the team lead in sacks with Khaleke Hudson with 8; he managed to outpace Hudson wsg Minnesota's Offensive Scheme in the TFL department with 18.5. His return means Michigan gets back 9 starters from the #10 S&P+ defense and should again expect to have a top ten—probably top five—defense in 2018.

Who slides in for McCray?  There is so much nuance to the linebacker types in this defense I have no idea who is envisioned for that role.  Uche? Mbem-Bosse? Anthony, Singleton, Ross, Gil?

Replacing Hurst I'm guessing will be rotations of Hudson, Mone, Dwumfour, maybe Jeter.

In his detailed pre-bowl presser, Don Brown sounded excited for the looming 2018 battle between Gil and Ross.  Seeing as Gil replaced McCray in the Outback, I think it's safe to say those are your two front-runners.

Great! Now if we can just get an entirely new set of offensive players and coaches competing for a conference title is within the realm of the possible!

Awesome.

We have a tougher schedule next year, but all we need is an average offense not ranked 86th again...Crap if we could get our offense into the top 40 - next year we could potentially be a top 10 team assuming our defense is top 5.

Thank you, thank you. We would have been fine on defense if he had left, but it still is huge that he came back. We’re going to have a damn good defense again.

I bet your heart grew two sizes today.  Take it from an old-ish guy: you think you're going to approach M football with ennui, but you're drooling every September.

I like best about Winovich is his firepower. His passion. The way he flies around and runs -- RUNS -- off the field with a big cat-that-just-swollowed-the-canary grin.

we need a lot more of that

Brian and Co. are going to have to scrape to find potential weaknesses on that side of the ball.  Maybe depth at DT?  We have a bevy of potential stars at LB to replace McCray.  Secondary is loaded.  Starting DL will--for the third consecutive year--be monstrous.

This is especially important for 2018, since defense tends to travel well while offenses can struggle on the road.

Safeties. A year of experience and strength training should help.....I hope. That was the weakness this year and will be again without some growth given DB’s defensive scheme.

Sorry, I still have a vision in my head of Kinnel jumping straight up for the interception on that 3rd and long in the bowl and watching the TE come across in front of him for the catch and 1st down.

The final play at Indy where he forced the Qb to throw into the EZ for Kinnel's pick - that was probably the happiest memory from this entire season.
