Update: Offensive Coaching Staff Overhaul
Reading more and more that Dan Enos and Greg Roman will likely be the newest additions to the Michigan coaching staff, replacing Drevno, Pep, and Frey (all of which rumored to have accepted jobs elsewhere). This basically confirms what our "insider" MGoBlog accounts have been posting throughout the day with regards to the coaching changes. In bringing in Greg Roman, it appears that Harbaugh is planning on switching to the pistol offense that he ran with Colin Kaepernick in SF. He's got the QB's for it in Patterson, McCaffrey, and Milton, as well as athletic WR's in DPJ, Black, and Collins. Let's hope it revitalizes the offense for next season.
Note* Nothing is confirmed but I highly doubt that every UM Insider who's been tracking these moves is wrong

The fact that Saban wants to poach him says it all. Excellent coach and excellent recruiter -- elite teams (like Alabama) go after assistants who are both. Crucial that we find a way to retain him.
January 3rd, 2018 at 6:36 AM ^
Is Saban offering him some type of promotion? Or is it merely a money or prestige move?
You'd think UM could match any salary offers Alabama tries to make, especially if the two million dollar braintrusts behind UM's offensive juggernaut move on. But if Saban is somehow considering Partridge for DC, then shoot, nothing really UM could do.
January 3rd, 2018 at 9:28 AM ^
I can't imagine Saban would offer a guy with no DC experience a DC spot. That's the premiere DC spot in all of CFB. Would have to think its a lateral move to replace Pruitt's inside LB's role.

I think most would tend to agree, which is why I qualified it as "somehow" because I don't see it either. Unless Saban puts this high a premium on recruiting AND Partridge is that good, Saban hiring Partiridge as his DC would be ballsy to say the least.
So does UM have the money to match an Alabama offer and is Partridge happy enough in Ann Arbor?

There was a perception that Partridge got hired by Micihgan for his connections to Gary. He's proven himself as a recruiter. But coaches don't hire DCs because of their recruiting and it's especially difficult to imagine Saban doing so.
Just getting hired by Saban boosts his credibility as a future DC. Even if you think it's a lateral move, it's one that's good for his resume.

No, that's not true at all. At all. Nope.
January 3rd, 2018 at 9:42 AM ^
It's an indirect offer of a promotion really. Association with Alabama's defense is about the best way to ensure that some other school will be eager to give you a promotion soon thereafter.

Back up the Brinks truck to his front door. KEEP PARTRIDGE!!! I don't care about the pear tree, but that bird needs to stay in its cage!

Harbaugh
Enos
Roman
Brown
RB: Jay Harbaugh (no comment - actually comment, still say Hart. Check his resume against Jay's, would crush recruiting at Michigan, adds diversity and keeps youth on offensive staff...move Jay to 100% SPT)
WR: Scott Turner
OL: TBD (Kurt Anderson is available)
DL: Mattison
LB: Brown/TBD (someone who is a dynamic recruiter and can "make up" for the lack of diversity on the offensive side...better yet, KEEP PARTRIDGE!)
CB: Zordich
S: Bush Sr.
I count 11 (or 12 if you bring in Hart and move JayBaugh to SPT). One, or both, of the TBDs would have to remain unfilled to stay at 10.

Yes I am counting the TBDs, which I thought would be clear from my last sentence.

Jim Harbaugh as part of the ten coach limit. We're allowed ten assistant coaches plus a HC.
January 3rd, 2018 at 9:36 AM ^
Maybe part of the problem is with the whole C0-OC thing. With Harbaugh in the mix, that's 3 people with their hands all over offensive decision-making. That's too many in my opinion. There should be one HC and one OC. That's it. Making shit compllicated can be problematic.
Running the pistol is a good idea though. Right now the personnel is better for that at the skill positions. And our OL is not good enough to run the offense we did this year.

Gap or zone?
January 3rd, 2018 at 11:05 AM ^
I'm with you. One HC and ONE OC.. especially since our HC is Harbaugh, it's already a co-OC deal anyway.
As for scheme, I'm indifferent. Multiple always appealed to me because it can provide enough base variety to fit most types of players then it can be narrowed down and more 'custom fit' based on personnell and talent of the players at any given time.
Quite frankly, the biggest issue I see with the current scheme, is the severe lack of offensive depth/talent left by Hoke from the 2013/14 classes in addition to the late hire of Harbaugh (it was necessary yes) in 2015. We've really only got two Harbaugh classes and his offense puts a big stress on the OL. Not much in the way of elite OL leftover and it's hard to expect every guy they recruited to hit, especially in year 1 or 2.

Correct. At least one of the A&M sites was reporting that A&M had a DC lined up, but that he was going to coach a bowl game before it was announced. Don Brown was speculation that grew out of that, but since it appears that it was Aranda at LSU, who subsequently turned A&M down.

I'm sorry, I understand Roman has experience, but doing the same thing he did with Dreveno screams lazy and uninspired. Was hoping he'd do a Don Brown hire where he goes outside of his coaching buddies and comfort zone. Enos is terrible as well. Don't want a Spartan on staff. They only have one loyalty. Besides that, he's not a good coach. He's just a great recruiter. Many will not be happy with these names. Not just me. Hopefully someone talks him out of these hires.

Agree about the Roman part.
We don't need yet another NFL retread looking for a job to wind down his career.
We need a proven college coordinator, ala Don Brown or Joe Moorhead.
January 3rd, 2018 at 5:17 PM ^
was only a coordinator at UConn before he was the head coach at Fordham. He was far from proven, I would wager a bet that many on this board laughed when James Franklin hired an FCS coach to be the OC. Also, funny that you mentioned Brown and Moorhead. When Randy Edsall was hired at Maryland from UConn, he refused to bring Joe Moorhead with him from UConn, which led Moorhead to take the Fordham job. Moorhead then refused to retain the Maryland Defensive Coordinator, even though he wanted to stay at Maryland. That was Don Brown. So yea.
