Update: Offensive Coaching Staff Overhaul

Submitted by MichiganSports3 on

Reading more and more that Dan Enos and Greg Roman will likely be the newest additions to the Michigan coaching staff, replacing Drevno, Pep, and Frey (all of which rumored to have accepted jobs elsewhere). This basically confirms what our "insider" MGoBlog accounts have been posting throughout the day with regards to the coaching changes. In bringing in Greg Roman, it appears that Harbaugh is planning on switching to the pistol offense that he ran with Colin Kaepernick in SF. He's got the QB's for it in Patterson, McCaffrey, and Milton, as well as athletic WR's in DPJ, Black, and Collins. Let's hope it revitalizes the offense for next season.

Note* Nothing is confirmed but I highly doubt that every UM Insider who's been tracking these moves is wrong

I think we need to all make sure we keep our expectations low until results come in, for sanity's sake.  The whole "QBs will automatically improve because....Harbaugh" expectations were rampant and never came to fruition, so let's not expect an immediate turnaround from any new hire.

I don't want to hear a peep from Harbaugh. Do that whole submarine deal and do not say a thing unless you have to make media appearances or until spring. No stupid trips, Judge Judy, whatever extra crap he does, save it.

Again, I have trouble describing it from the outside. But damn, this team just didn't look like they had any fire when things got tough. On Monday, it felt like they couldn't wait until the game ended.

The trips are not the problem.  I have no problem with the trip abroad or the extra effort it took for Harbaugh to land Quinn Nordin.

Have not seen mention but Nordin was oustanding and without him that score would have been ugly lopsided.

It’s ok to MANBALL if you recruit a monster O-Line but we just haven’t been able to get the personnel needed to run that type of offense right now. Hope the changes can bring out the strengths we do have rather than constantly highlighting our weaknesses.

He has made more good hires than bad ones here at Michigan. Drevno even looked like an okay hire until this year. Every single defensive hire has been good/great including Durkin (even if he did check out before the OSU game). Jedd Fisch turned out to be a great hire when many of us scratched our heads over it. John Baxter was a great hire. Harbaughs first Stanford coaching staff produced FIVE head coaches.

Greg roman got cheered out of SF, failed as on OC with the Bills and was part of a horrific offensive staff in Baltimore this year while coaching a TE's group that did more or less nothing outside of been around forever Ben Watson.

Enos got fired from Arkansas because they couldn't win and led a 90th ranked offense this year. Neither are proven elite recruiters at the college level.  This is a bunch of re-tread hires and its dissapointing, really can't afford to lose Partridge either as LB's have been great and he is an elite recruiter, but Drevno is gone and that is good. Bring in a real WR coach and an OL coach and some actual recruiters on this staff and lets go.

I really hope Harbaugh's stubborness doesn't screw us again. They need to take their time. Research and throw money at the top qualified candidates. I don't want retreads and I don't want his coaching buddies. We have all the resources in the world. Pouch or hire the best. I'm over this search already.

I agree, we need coaches that can recruit at a high level.  That is why I was excited when Greg Schiano was going to be the head coach at Tenn, say what you want about the guy but he can recruit.  Now after the UT meltdown he'll be at Ohio State another couple years, lucky us.

I am basing this off of stats alone, but I don't know if you can consider Roman's job in Buffalo as a failure. He had top half of the league offenses, including the #1 rushing offense both years. The same buffalo team was 29th this year in offense. To have a better than average offense in the NFL without a top tier talent at QB is an impressive feat. I have no idea on his ability to adapt to the college game or in his ability to recruit, but if we have the same production that he was able to conjure up in Buffalo here, I would be very happy with it.

Because he was used as the scapegoat in Buffalo by the head coach trying to keep his job. Everyone knew Rex Ryan was on the hot seat in 2016, and when they started 0-2, he felt he needed to get rid of somebody. It wasn't going to be his twin brother. The week before he got fired, the Bills offense scored 31 points and had 393 yards. I'm not saying he is flawless, but a lot of good coaches get fired in the NFL, and it isn't always because of subpar performances.

He got the #1 rushing offense out of a Bills team run by the Ryan Brothers and quarterbacked by Tyrod Taylor. He was viewed as more of a scapegoat for the Ryan Brothera than as a failure himself. Plus, getting the #1 rushing offense with a passing attack that strikes fear into no one is an achievement

Partridge is the lead recruiter for pretty much every top kid in Michigan's 2018 and 2019 classes, losing him would be a huge dagger.

Roman is a fantastic coach. He was given the keys to the Ravens rushing offense this year and they finished 7th in the football outsiders rushing ranking despite getting no help from a dogpoop passing offense. He’s also an OL specialist which is what we need.

Not really, he was in charge of the run game but he was not the OL position coach, that was Joe D'Allessandriss and I know this because I am a Ravens fan. In fact there was an additional second offensivle line coach who also wasn't Roman, he wasn't coaching the offensive line, he was in charge of the run game and did a good job with that but he wasn't calling plays and when he did that in Buffalo and SF there were constant complaints about his playcalling being incredibly conservative and vanilla and he was reviled by fanbases in both of those places.

is so good (and I have no idea if he is or not) then why would Harbaugh's brother let him go and why would he want to leave the pros for college? just curious

This thread has everything. Roman is a great OC that finished ....... in rushing offense. Greg Roman was run out of SF and has been terrible at Baltimore. Enos said he liked Michigan State once!!!!!!!!!! Enos is a good play caller. You guys are the best.

I dont like Enos but maybe he is better at OC than HC. I think we need a good WR coach. The young talented WR need good coaching. I'm a big Azzanni fan. Not sure if he would want to come back to college, but he is an elite recruiter and a great WR coach.
