Update: Offensive Coaching Staff Overhaul
Reading more and more that Dan Enos and Greg Roman will likely be the newest additions to the Michigan coaching staff, replacing Drevno, Pep, and Frey (all of which rumored to have accepted jobs elsewhere). This basically confirms what our "insider" MGoBlog accounts have been posting throughout the day with regards to the coaching changes. In bringing in Greg Roman, it appears that Harbaugh is planning on switching to the pistol offense that he ran with Colin Kaepernick in SF. He's got the QB's for it in Patterson, McCaffrey, and Milton, as well as athletic WR's in DPJ, Black, and Collins. Let's hope it revitalizes the offense for next season.
Note* Nothing is confirmed but I highly doubt that every UM Insider who's been tracking these moves is wrong

There were a few zone reads...the one I recall specifically he rode for a while before giving it. I think our QBs may have pulled on a zone read once this year....I believe it was against Ohio State.

Not certain but I think you are referring to our zone read where the QB is supposed to have the option to hand it off or run it himself. Not quite a run pass option.
We did this wth Speight and O'Korn as well and I'd guess maybe 3% of the time the QB has actually kept it.

Is an offense mainly consisted of having the RB directly behind the QB who is in shotgun. It's a down hill running attack with many triple option variations. You can effectively run zone, power, trap, wham, the whole book out of it. It fits best with an athletic QB who is a run option. Watch 49ers with Kap or Nevada with Kap and you will see exactly what it is. I would welcome it 100% if Shea Patterson or Joe Milton is the QB. Don't really seeing it fitting Peters as QB. I think Harbaugh has been wanting to get to it but didn't have the QB. But he's gone after guys in the past and missed that would fit it perfectly. .He may finally be able to do it now that Shea/Milton are on campus.

The Joe Milton mobility mantra is hilarious to me. I don't believe there is any indication to suggest that he is even slightly mobile except the color of his skin.

I looked up his stats and watched his film, which show that he ran the ball in high school far less than Mccaffrey and even less than peters. If you actually did any research whatsoever, you would recognize that Mccaffrey (who also should not be considered dual threat) will probably be more mobile than Milton. I am not trying to insinuate that Milton is incredibly stoic or downplay his athleticism, but he is constantly mentioned on this blog as this guy who will be able to bring mobility to the table, but in reality, nothing he has done in his football career has shown that to be likely.

Peyton Manning ran a 4.8 at the NFL combine and he is as statue as they come. Watch the kid play, not google 40 times to determine what kind of QB he is.

does not fit the pistol offense hes not that mobile, pretty sure mcaffery ran the pistol in high school him and patterson fit that offense pretty well.

Neither of them fit -- do we end up with a very thin QB bench again?

McCaffery is a better runner than Milton. Peters and Milton are about on the same level as runners, they can do it but aren't going to be a JT Barrett type.

Don't see him as a pistol QB.
January 3rd, 2018 at 10:30 AM ^
I'm ready for a change, but poor Brandon Peters. I don't think he'd be successful in that system. He's going to be the next Shane Morris. CMU is really improving their team with our transfers.
January 3rd, 2018 at 1:54 PM ^
Wisconsin really improved with CMU's transfer :P
January 3rd, 2018 at 5:39 PM ^
And to think, it was such a short time ago a large portion of the fan base didn't want Shea to come because how Peters might feel about it. Now the scheme could change to not fit him as well.
Always take talent!

I'm fine with banishing PepDrev. I'd also love to see Michigan run a coherent offense. So this works for me if true.

I guess this hits on what would be one of my biggest complaints about the playcalling - I can point to moments in every game this past season where it seemed muddled and clearly a hodgepodge of styles. That in itself made the offense seem ponderous. Consistency in playcalling by itself would be a huge plus coming into 2018.

"I'm not saying I’m a Drevno guy, but wasn’t he JH’s OC everywhere he’s been, including pros?"
No.

2014: Greg Roman (Drevno OL coach at USC)

No. I think Drevno might have been the OC at San Diego but he's never been an OC anywhere else AFAIK. Just an OL coach. Roman was Harbaugh's OC with the 49ers.

System hung
January 3rd, 2018 at 4:45 PM ^
The SDS site just says OC & OL during his 4 years, but he wasn't always OC.
He did have a highly rated offense in 2 of those years, but that was 10 years ago and consider the conference they played in
Just an OL coach for the rest of his career since then.

The offense has pretty much been a cluster for JH's entire tenure at UM.

#3 - behind Penn St. and Ohio State... and the B1G wasn't especially good offensively last year.
PSU - #18
OSU - #23
MI - #40
January 3rd, 2018 at 11:59 AM ^
How does that qualify as a clusterfuck though? The offense was also good stats-wise--and not a clusterfuck--in 2015. I really wish people would think before they type.
January 3rd, 2018 at 12:26 PM ^
It doesn't... I was just pointing out that the claim that it was the #1 offense in the B1G was false.
The 2015 and 2016 offenses weren't a clusterfuck - they were just mediocre to slightly better than mediocre.
