I thought it was obvious he was going to ND long before this and I am glad he did. We have enough TEs though I suspect since we offered Garber's VanSumeran he would probably commit. He originally committed to Western and then to Iowa so he is likely to take the better offer here. I would prefer if we load up on interior lineman instead as it is the thing that will decide whether we are an 8-4/9-3 team next year or a 10-2/11-1.

"I would prefer if we load up on interior lineman instead as it is the thing that will decide whether we are an 8-4/9-3 team next year or a 10-2/11-1."
Do you really think that loading up on freshman offensive linemen will make a huge difference in our record in 2018? For real?

I do think there are a couple guys we've gone after in recent cycles who might have contributed immediately on the OL. Isaiah Wilson would probably be the main one. I don't know if Petit-Frere is in that category but I suspect not as he's listed < 280 lbs.
As for the interior line though, jeez--we've already got Onwenu, Bredeson, Ruiz, and Spanellis, plus Runyan. Hard to see much of an immediate need for interior OL.
December 14th, 2017 at 11:57 AM ^
FWIW, Wilson redshirted at Georgia this year. He wasn't very polished coming out of high school, and he's listed at 345 lbs., which probably means he's about 365.
December 14th, 2017 at 12:47 PM ^
I'm not familiar with Georgia's OL, but I kind of assumed that they already had some decent OTs on the roster and didn't need to worry about playing Wilson this season. But yeah, even for the 5-star players I know it's still rare for an OL to play as a true freshman (and probably even more rare for a freshman OL to play well).
December 14th, 2017 at 1:13 PM ^
Either that, or he's carrying around some extra volleyballs.

December 14th, 2017 at 3:29 PM ^
That would mean that we are going to absolutely dominate the inside of the line in 2018 for those guys to have a chance to go pro after next year.
I would love it for those two and they both have huge upside but they are a LONG, LONG way from jumping to the pros early.
December 14th, 2017 at 12:12 PM ^
No. Not directly, as in of course I don't expect them to be on the field. But I believe in depth and practice as well as competition so indirectly yes. FOR REAL.
However, that is not what I meant by that post.I was purely talking depth that creates urgency of good play for those who start. But since you want to be that guy, let's talk about it. Can a true freshman be an impact player? The answer is yes. These freshman OL and DL did pretty well this year:
Andrew Thomas- Georgia
Trey Smith- Tennessee
Mekhi Becton- Louisville
Rashawn Slater - Northwestern
Jack Anderson - Texas Tech
Corey Bethley - TCU
A.J. Epenesa - Iowa
Lamonte McDougle - West Virgina
Jordan Scott - Oregon
LSU and Michigan State (who beat us remember?) both started 3 true freshman OL/DL on one side of the ball at different points this year. And on and on.
SO YEAH. FOR REAL. Freshman can make a difference. It's myth (especially here) that lineman have to take so much time to be able to develop and contribute.
December 14th, 2017 at 12:43 PM ^
That's not the question. Yes, freshman offensive linemen can play. We've seen it at Michigan in the form of Ben Bredeson and Mason Cole, among others.
The question is about freshman offensive linemen making a 2- or 3-game swing in Michigan's record. Personally, I don't believe a freshman LT is going to be that much better than [insert our 2018 LT] to take our team from 8-4 to 10-2.
December 14th, 2017 at 11:51 AM ^
On the bright side, we're only 6 days from the early signing so hopefully we lock up who we have and then move on to whatever big targets we have left.
December 14th, 2017 at 11:52 AM ^
I dont think any recurit for 2018 is going to effect the season W/L next year, unless that recruit is a OT that starts right away. Im not sure we have any player on the board who would fit that profile, even Petit-Frere.
December 14th, 2017 at 11:46 AM ^
to say with great gusto
FUCK NOTRE DAME!
I really do not know or care about the recruit. Good luck to him.
I want to smash them come 9-1-2018. I would not put it past those fuckers to sneak in a game before that.
December 14th, 2017 at 11:54 AM ^
An Irish school with a french name in bumfuck Indiana? LOL.
In case you cannot tell I hate those fuckers but am glad we get to play them.

December 14th, 2017 at 11:49 AM ^
Oh well. Good luck to him (except against M).
December 14th, 2017 at 11:50 AM ^
Who cares. Both of the guys we allready have are bigger and faster. MM is way better and were still in it for Ford.
Changing the subject, but osu getting togliaaaa or whatever his name is bad. He is there best recruit IMO. Of Course he will have to beat Ruiz. I sure hope we close on somebody this cycle. Frere is the main dude IMO. He is a flat out stud. I would take him over that fat fuck Carman who osu's whole world revolves around.
I do have a question. Whu does osu think they have a better D-line coach than us. Mattison's resume is just a little more complete if you ask me.
December 14th, 2017 at 11:55 AM ^
Nah, Larry Johnson at OSU is a stud defensive line coach. He's the best DL coach in the country, IMO. He was the guy at Penn State when they were producing guys left and right (Michael Haines, Courtney Brown, etc.), and now they're churning them out at Ohio State.
I think Mattison is great, and he does awesome things with some lesser talented guys, but Johnson has a better resume.
December 14th, 2017 at 12:17 PM ^
I was really hoping we could've made a play for him after he left PSU. I could have seen a universe where him and Mattison could've coexisted.
December 14th, 2017 at 11:52 AM ^
No biggie. I would rather see the scholarship be used in an area of bigger need. Good luck to this young man...except when he plays us.
December 14th, 2017 at 11:51 AM ^
With 2 TE's already in the class, plus Gentry, Wheatley, McKeon, Eubanks, and probably someone else I'm forgetting about, we'll be fine. (Bunting I'm assuming would not be offered a 5th year, but if he is, add him). Better to use the scholarship on a position where we need more depth.

I've seen this rumor state muttiple times now. Does anyone have any idea where this may have started?
If it came from Rivals, I don't buy it especially after that crap they pulled with starting the Brandon Peters wanting to transfer rumor.
December 14th, 2017 at 1:10 PM ^
lorenz made specific comments on this rumor and mentioned him going to Va Tech where there are lots of connections. I dont know why he would stay when hes been a blocking TE for the last couple years and his athletic ability has never been exploited like most fans expected it to be
December 14th, 2017 at 11:52 AM ^
I mean, I'm not trying to disparage the kid, but why is everyone acting like this is a huge loss? Michigan has Wheatley, Gentry, Eubanks & McKean coming back and Muhammad and Schoonmaker committed. Is there some scouting report on this kid, that is not being represented by 247's 3-star .8797 rating (494th in the nation)?
December 14th, 2017 at 12:29 PM ^
His offer list was that of a 4-Star so the services might be underrating him.

That sounds like nonsense, but I wouldn't know for sure. Have a source?
December 14th, 2017 at 12:48 PM ^
Michigan was after Tremble. They're still after Luke Ford. And they just offered another '18 TE currently committed to Iowa.
If Muhammad truly intends to decommit over signing another TE, Michigan is either dumb or they hate him.

between 4 pretty darn good schools. I'm sure our coaches are bummed. I just don't see the reason of taking three TEs in a small class, especially when one of our two tackle commits weighs 260 lbs and has played TE exclusively for his HS his Senior year. I'm comfortable with what we have, hopefully the coaches move on from recruiting this position...
December 14th, 2017 at 12:39 PM ^
That's unfortunate.

You never know, but 79% of the crystal balls are for Michigan. OSU has received a few recently, but so has MICH.
December 14th, 2017 at 1:05 PM ^
Not a crootin insider so I'm curious as to where the Wheatley transfer runors are coming from...anyone reliable? I've not seen anyhting posted on boards ot Twitter.
Also on Friday....I beleive the latest CB's are coming from OSU folks so take it for what you will....

Can never understand why Kelly's demeanor on the sidelines does not more effectively repel recruits.
We will be fine without him.

Will be fun to see how he does since we will be facing off against the Irish again. Can't wait. We will likely have 2-3 very good TEs at all times.

with a fellow UM fan about all the TEs that Harbaugh was bringing in. He thought it was stupid and I told him it could change the way the game is played and if any coach would do it, it would be ours.' Well we never saw that - TEs spread all over the field to force the D to make quick, probably faulty decisions in order to defend it - so I guess we have enough.
Seeing Harbaugh only knows the game 12,000 times better than i, i guess we'll never see a heavy spread so although I like to see us get players Harbaugh and staff want because they are usually picked for more thanjust their stats and recruiting rankings, I have to say I am not bothered and am happy for the young man, knowing he gets a good education, but feel bad for him at the same time in having to obligate himself to Kelly for four to five years. Asiasi would never had gotten homesick and would have stayed on the team, then transfer to USC.
