Sam Webb Says Michigan now interested in Shea Patterson

Submitted by Tedbossman on
Michigan now interested, along with the schools out west. All compliance offices of interested suitors are trying to see if he can become immediately eligible. Webb also says some Ole Miss players have retained legal counsel in an effort for immediate eligibility, though he says he’s not sure if Patterson is among them. Why the change? IMO likely tied to Speights decision. *Title edit for clarity

i guess i dont understand the fear of a true freshman.. other programs start freshman at QB and make it work.  Alabama, FSU started a true freshman.  OSU brought in a true freshman, and honestly looked better than Barret.  I actually feel if barret completed that game, we have a better chance at winning.  We need to get out of this nonsense that you can only be good after 2-3 years of watching.  Play the best player at the position.

Brandon Peters - #6 qb, #158 overall player
Dylan McCaffrey - #7 qb, #131 overall player
Shea Patterson - #1 qb, #3 overall player

Brandon Peters 2017 stats - 5 games, 97 yds/game,4 tds
Dylan McCaffrey career stats - Nothing
Shea Patterson 2016 stats - 3 games, 293 yds/game, 6 tds
Shea Patterson 2017 stats - 7 games, 323 yards/game, 17 tds

Shea Patterson neh?

Stats completely handpicked to make Shea look favorable... still, who really doesn’t want to let this kid compete for a job?

sophomore stats? You know when he looked like a broken qb and got benched...

Patterson looked good, but not at all a finished product, this season before getting hurt.  Still, he would be coming here in a much better place than O'korn was. Shea showed improvement and flashes of his highly touted 5* ability, O'Korn not so much as a soph.

Bring the best guy to put us in a position to win. Tired of waiting forever and playing the nice guy game. Everyone makes fun of asshole coaches around the league but those assholes are winning big time and they dont care about feelings. College football is pure business now days. After seeing the “punishment” ncaa gave Ole Miss i have no faith in college sports anymore.

You will never been able to recruit top tier hs QBs if you are continuously looking for transfer Qbs. At some point at Michigan, Harbaugh has to show he's recruited and developed HIS QB. He needs to start doing this with Peters/McCaffery now.

I understand what your saying. I think Harbaugh earned a lot of respect for his QB coaching with these guys.

Alex Smith

Colin Kaepernick

Jake Rudock

Andrew Luck

and what he did with Wilton Speight last year has definitely gave him the benefit of the doubt. I mean Alex Smith was considered a huge bust when Harbaugh took over for the 49ers. Rudock was passed up at Iowa and came here in the 2nd half of the season and was playing pretty damn good.

Peters has done well so far. McCaffrey is suppose to be pretty good as well. We keep hearing practice reports about how good he was but they did the same thing with O'Korn and we all know how that turned out.

Milton is raw but I think dude can throw a football 3/4 of the length of a football field so he has arm talent for days.

Doyle to me is going to be a shocker. His SR film really took me by surprise! He has to get a bump in hit rating here pretty soon.

That seems like a circular argument. If you continuously bring in transfers then there is no need to recruit high school qbs. The caveat being that the transfers need to be successful. I do agree however that in the current qb situation, Harbaugh (if he is really considering Patterson) is taking a risk that could potentially lead to qbs transferring.

The point is, Patterson isn't looking to become "depth" anywhere.  He's going to be looking for a starter job from the get go or else weak "competition, wink wink" lip service from the HC. He would not get such assurances at Michigan, I hope.  Furthermore, I think there's a lot better fits out there for him in terms of competition and scheme: UCLA, Florida, Oregon, hell even Nebraska if Frost goes there etc.  If he can't transfer without sitting out a year my guess is he goes nowhere.  If he understands he is coming to Michigan to truly COMPETE for a starting job and Harbaugh is clear on this then great.  But a Toledo kid that ends up at Ole Miss of all places indicates to me that the kid and his family embrace all the gamesmanship and intrigue of the dark side of college athletics. They are most likely out for themselves in this.  Probably not our guy, frankly speaking.

No matter, it's time to get the Peters>>McCaffery>>Milton train rolling.  I like the symmetry of 3 straight 4 star QBs coming in all hand picked by Harbaugh.  Let's see if we can make this a dynasty starting 2018.

They would suck worse than the guys who got 2 QBs killed this year? Really? A guy who is 22 years old and good enough to be on 2 deep at a major program but not good enough to start would be worse than the guys we have now who are freshmen and sophmores? I call bullshit on that.....

And I don't care how good this guy is if we can't give him 3 seconds to go through his reads without having to run for his life or fear a blindside drilling because we couldn't pick up a stunt. It will not work without competent OL play and we lose our two best guys next year on the line.

There's a segment of Michigan fans who would rather talk about how great a person Okorn is while singlehandedly losing us football games who aren't sure about getting this kid. The other segment who want to win football games and championships is ok with this move. Hopefully Harbaugh is in the second camp

I agree with the guy. I don’t mind criticizing the players. It’s big time football. I’m sure there are a lot of great “people” at Michigan. We don’t have a blog to talk about them. Football is a tough game, lots of great things happen when you win and it sucks win you lose; especially as a qb.

Everything I’ve read says he would have to sit out a year. Maybe ole miss players find a legal Loophole but as of now don’t see it it happening with immediate eligibility.

What if McCaffrey plays better than Peters in the spring and then wins the starting job in fall camp? Should Harbaugh not start him so as not to piss Peters off? What if Doyle or Milton develops way ahead of schedule and takes the second- or even first-string job--should Harbaugh keep him third to make sure Peters or McCaffrey don't transfer? This is ridiculous--you can't worry about that stuff--everybody just needs to be an adult and understand (1) that the vest player plays, and (2) that part of Harbaugh's job is bringing in the best players he can find to compete fir those jobs. Turning away an established star player because it might piss off one or two guys on your current team would be irresponsible--it reduces your chances of winning, and that isn't fair to the other 83+ players on the roster. Plus it builds a sense of entitlement--if you won't bring in a top QB to compete with Peters and McCaffrey, then maybe players at other positions start to think you can't bring in talented transfers to compete at those positions either.
