Confirmed: The Peters era has begun

Submitted by killerseafood3 on

Harbaugh confirmed Peters is the new starting QB going forward. Probably doesn't need a new thread, neg me if you want.

Just wanted to say some mistakes would be expected for a redshirt freshman. So let’s just end it here, no need for name calling and technicalities. I do like your avatar pic, gotta love animals.

RE: Two of Peters' 14 passes.

Quite true, those were only 2. But Wilton Speight threw two truly awful passes against Florida and people basically forget about every other pass he made in that game, except for the one that Kekoa Crawford (remember when people were blaming Speight for that? Clearly a Crawford error) messed up. Take those two passes away and Speight's entire trajectory this year is different.

That's not to say that Peters can't learn on the job. He can. I hope he picks things up quickly, and now that he's got the spot he may. If we can run the football and play good defense he doesn't need to be fantastic, just adequate--look at how little Georgia asked from Jacob Fromm today in its blowout against Florida. But throw a pass like that bad slant to Perry against OSU and a promising drive has just turned into 6 points the other way.

If a guy throws 30 passes in a game, the margin between a middling 57% completion day and a fantastic 66% day is 3 passes. The margins do matter. If Speight hits Perry instead of overthrowing him on the pick-six and hits Crawford DO instead of overthrowing him by 10 yards on that wheel, the Florida score is similar to Georgia's today, and we think the Speight injury has cost us a chance at a national title this year. Just a couple of passes.

I don't know, seems like none of those touch throws of Michigan's QB's are in stride and just not even close to perfect for so long. I think they need to get out there on Sundays and weekdays and start practicing those bombs and touch passes over the top until they are hitting them like every time. Just don't let Peters throw his arm out. And do it in THE BIG HOUSE where you can get the feel for the backdrop of the stadium and the wind. All that stuff figures in that they aren't getting on their indoor practice field. I guarantee this hurts the passing game so much it's not even funny. You have to practice as close as you can to gametime situations. We all know this.

Edit, I'm meaning like just the QB, wideouts and maybe the DBs/Safeties work in THE BIG HOUSE. It's not going to screw up the turf even close to what a game would and they are just running routes so what heck.

He clearly played better than O'Korn against the same opponent.  No one is saying the problem is solved, but it appears the best quarterback available is on the field now.

not the same at all. Peter actually made reads and threw to open receivers who were not his first  read. Also I hate to credit Millen but he was right about how much faster he made decisions, even against Purdue Peters held the ball and had to scramble out of the pocket all the time. Peters is also a redshirt freshman, it is very reasonable to think he will get better as we go and not worse like the 5th year did.

It was also reasonable to think O’Korn would at least maintain his level of play from the Purdue game. Ya know, when he completed 70% of his passes for 270 yards... very impressive. And people clamoring that he was better than Speight and the QB position was solved... except he couldn’t do it past that game. All I’m saying is people might want to cool the hype a bit until the kid goes out there and does it more than once. He looked good and very promising. But it’s entirely possible he regresses much the same way O’Korn did and you see the reason he was behind him on the depth chart. Hopefully not, but I think more than a solid showing off the bench against Rutgers is needed to truly gauge the kid.

get you want to pump the brakes but your argument is pure strawman. I don't think anyone is acting like Peters is the man and we will win out now. I am happy with the first real playing time of our highly touted redshirt freshman qb who people like you had given up on 2 weeks ago. No matter what you say it is not the same as when Okorn took over, People are happy Peters is good enough to play now so his real development can begin. When Okorn took over we though ok he is better than Sp8 and with our D we can still compete for the B1G titlw. With Peters the focus is on the future, so even if he has some bad games we can tolerate it.

Millen is a good announcer. I don't get why everyone shits on him calling games. He's legitimately good, and provides thoughtful ananysis that is usually on point. Give him a break, he's been out of the Lions organisation for quite some time.

did not say he was a bad announcer, I think he is a good announceer in fact. I said I hate to credit him and that is because I hate him. I will always hate him, but that does not stop me from acknowledging him as an announcer.  I don't ever complain about announcers anyway, people that do that annoy me to no end. I still hate Millen though, yea fuck that guy.

Better pocket presence and the touch on passes were things we haven't seen all year. Like they say when you are at rock bottom, no place to go but up. IMO Michigan was at rock bottom with the qb play. For all those with the next year excuse, next year just started.

Which is fair. But it’s Rutgers. Let’s see it again against a more competent opponent. I mean O’Korn completed 70% of his passes for 270 yards against Purdue before failing to even be competent after that. Let’s actually see it happen again against decent competition before saying he’s the answer we have all been looking for the way we did with JOK after Purdue.

But I remember a thread for Higdon for Heisman chances after Indiana and the O-line  woes being cured. It was Indiana. I get it, just one game but the aforementioned eye test on Peters was better than anything put forth by the previous 2 qbs. These next few games should tell us all we need to know. I for one am more optimistic for the the offense and its production than I was coming into this game. It gives us a glimmer of hope for the future when it was somewhat bleak if you ask me. But then again no one is asking me. Just my two cents.

Which is why I said be careful making that proclamation too early. We all felt and said the best QB was available and on the field after O’Korn went out and completed 70% of his passes for 270 yards against Purdue. Then all of a sudden he wasn’t. Maybe before saying Peters is the guy and the best QB, lets see if he can replicate or improve upon this game against a vastly inferior opponent. If Peters goes out against a much better Minnesota team and goes 8/23 passing with two picks, everyone will be bitching again and calling for McCaffrey. Peters played very well today but again, let’s be careful proclaiming him the best QB and labeling him after 14 pass attempts against the worst team on our schedule.

Valid points for sure. Not annointing Peters just yet, holding out on my decision on that one. That being said Michigan could do no worse than the product that was being put out there so far this year. Lets just hope for the best from here on out. Have a wonderful evening and.....GO BLUE!!!!!

1-Purdue's D isn't that good.

2-O'Korn actually made the simplified reads, but he still wasn't making progressions in that game.

3-Peters will have his struggles, but he is sharper and has more tools than both O'Korn and Speight.  My brother and I were amazed by him in warmups last year.

The rest of the season going into next year just got really interesting.

You are right that folks look at the outcome and ascribe attributes unfairly to the source. Close your eyes and you might hit a golf ball as far as a pro. The important point is to understand attributes - and then determine if results should reflect those attributes. Peters demonstrates a whole set of positive attributes (progressions, timing, type of throws, checkdowns, pocket presence) that JOK has never demonstrated. Peters showed those traits in the Spring Game; JOK rarely showed any of those vs Purdue and almost never since. Will Peters always generate great results or always show those attributes? Probably not. Will he occasionally fail on these skills? Probably. But the high % of observations say he can complete the steps to perform at a much higher level than JOK.

Agreed...but didn't it feel like a Michigan QB of old? It did to me. Now all that's missing is a massive marquee LT, a big RT, and Cole or Ruiz at.

Peters played much better than most would have expected, especially the likes of professionals like Chris Balas. He'll get more reps and will get even better.

People have gotten better at challenging long-held orthodoxies in college football, but the idea that a senior quarterback is greater than a freshman quarterback is one that I think most coaches would probably still adhere to
