Harbaugh: John O'Korn to remain starting QB against Rutgers.

Submitted by BoFlex on

John O'Korn will remain Michigan's starting QB vs. Rutgers, Jim Harbaugh says. Brandon Peters still backup.

I boarded the Let's See Peters Express a few weeks ago, but if these coaches think he's not ready to play then he's not going to play. As a fan I want them to try something new but starting a backup for reasons other than "he's earned it" can go terribly.

I don't think this is necessarily a doomsign and Peters can still make a leap; lots of practice time as #2 ahead this season then bowl practices and spring. If D-Caf (which is an excellent nickname for a wholesome McCaffrey dude) can gain a hundred pounds and be good to go next year that's great, too.

yay

This really is odd. Jim is a great QB coach and knows better than anyone, but come on, man. We need to see what Brandon has. This is Rutgers. I'm confident the defense can win the game for us. Good time to see if Brandon can do anything.

Penn State's offense never fired on all cylinders with Christian Hackenberg, the anointed one, there were always the bad reads, the inconsistent throws, the sacks. Then Hackenberg gets dinged up midway through PSU's third tier bowl game and a short backup QB named McSorley trots out on the field. Immediately, McSorley starts making plays, moves the chains, and Penn State scores a couple of TDs to make the game close. And then the next year, McSorley, with a little help from some guy named Barkley make an unlikely run all the way to the B1G Championship and the Rose Bowl.

One question is, what if Penn State had taken a chance on McSorley earlier in the season? The second question is, why stick with a QB who guarantees mediocrity, when a highly talented bench guy may have the on-field moxie and physical gifts to actually make plays?

Everyone calling for peters were the same ones screaming for Okorn when speight wasn't good. Stop pretending to know more than Harbaugh, it's ignorant as hell.

At this point either Peters isn't good or Harbaugh is bad at evaluating talent.  I think the most likely option is that peters isn't good.

by this is delusional. O'Korn played decently. He earned the right to remain a starter and his targets had a lot of drops. Also, Peters will probably come in if it's a blowout. Then we'll see how he plays.

John O'Korn had a much better game against PSU than he did against MSU or Indiana. He appears to be improving and learning from past mistakes. I would love to see Peters get some drives in this game. I'd like to see Harbaugh do a similar split with Peters and O'Korn to what he did with O'Korn and Speight to begin the season. But I think O'Korn is demonsrating the ability to learn, and he competes as hard as anybody. I'm glad that Harbaugh is sticking with him, for now.

Starting Peters this week would be a HUGE gamble. The team is coming off a blowout and they need to win emphatically this week or shit will spiral out of control. Tossing in a redshirt frosh without any game experience could be a disaster and mess with the minds of the players. We should be able to run against Rutgers and build a good lead. Once we get that pad, I suspect we will see Peters mid way through the 3rd quarter. Then we can see what he does. Afterall, JOK didn't have a horrible game against PSU. If he had tossed 4 INTs, the conversation could be different.

Many other issues to work on offensively. Get some work for the OL, the RBs, get them some success and confidence.

Get a 3 score lead on Rutgers in the first half, get Peters in for a good bit in the 2nd half and see what they've got.

You can't call this a rebuilding year when the head coach refuses to make it one.

This team is still a full year away from being operational.

It would take a miracle for the OL to drastically improve next year. Given Harbaugh's apparent must-win-now and risk-averse approach, it would be very surprising if Michigan gives the QB reigns to anyone but Speight next year. And it would be even more surprising if Speight does well. That leaves us in another hole as we'll have wasted two years without any semblence of hope for good QB play. It would be surprising if the WRs and route schemes are magically decent next year.

The defense will be fine because there are very few good offenses on Michigan's schedule, and even fewer competent QBs. But I don't see the offense improving enough to do better than this year.

A miracle is right. People need to understand reality. 3 very difficult away games next year, including to start the season at ND.. with a new center and a new LT. And a hope the right side of the line improves. And possibly a new QB is Speight can even come back. We need experience this year. Do we really care if we can go to the Little Caesar’s bowl vs some other unimportant bowl?

The one thing that is worrisome is that Peters is one O'Korn injury away from being the starter anyway. Wouldn't it be wise for Peters to get a few drives vs. a lowly opponent?

He's still just a RS Freshman.  I know he enrolled early, but he's still young.  Whatever is holding him back right now can be corrected, whether it's on field or off field issues.

It just goes to show that Brandon Peters will never play a down at Michigan and his transfer is imminent. Why not live through the growing pains with a RS Freshmen that you can build the future around. Instead, we go through the growing pains with a RS Senior that will never play a meaningful snap once his eligibility is expired. Not sure what BP did to get in the dog house but it cannot be good.

Peters couldn't even get in for the last possession in a blow out. For some reason I have a feeling Harbaugh wants to appease the fan base as little as possible when it comes to breaking out a new quarterback. Really hoping we can come out firing and be up by 35 in the 4th this week. That's the only way Peters sees multiple drives and I was so pissed he wasn't out there in Saturday.

The start Peters bandwagon. Obviously looking toward next season because there is unlikely any B1G championship this year. I don’t think there is any guarantee that Speight will return next year either for health reasons. Then we’d have a Peters without a start and RS McCaffrey and two true freshman. Not great, Bob. Edit to say the bar for JOK playing better is really low but he still didn’t score against PSU. He is one of 2 people to touch the ball every play and he has 1 TD and 5 TOs this season. That’s awful.

JOK only gets better by playing and he did improve somewhat against PSU. Totally agree this is the right decision but I hope we can get ahead enough to give Peters some playtime

Great, he will improve marginally and we will still finish 8-4. He won't be here next year so its irritating that we are left with subpar QB play when we have younger players who need the experience for next year. I have a gut feeling WS will not be here next year for some odd reason, so Peters and McCaffrey need to get ready for the future. The fact that Peters cannot beat out a horrid QB in JOK is alarming.

I am praying that Dylan McCaffrey is the savior of Michigan football.

O'Korn threw for a grand total of 58 yards against Indiana, and then went into Happy Valley, against a much better defense that had had two entire weeks to prepare for him and tripled his yardage with no interceptions.  That's not the sort of improvement that gets you benched.

That said, if they can't find snaps for Peters at some point vs Rutgers, then that's a very bad sign.  Either for Peters' ability or for the coaching staff's ability.
