OT: ESPN Cancels Barstool Van Talk After One Episode

Submitted by Dylan on

Recent discussions were being had regarding Barstool before the PSU debacle.  I would like to return to those happy times.

Obviously you don’t understand the humor and satire the site creates. I started reading barstool back in 2008, it is totally different from back then. I don’t understand how people can’t just have fun with some situations and make fun of things and not have to get all upset about everything.

It's funny how often you hear places that are sort of toxic environments claim "it's all an act".  Lots of places are funny without being offensive; PMT is legitimately fun and doesn't veer nearly as havily into the worst parts of the rest of Barstool.  So if it's really an act and not, you know, people being themselves, then it's a shitty act and people are allowed to not want to be engaged with them.

one way or the other. I don't watch anything on that network accept college football. I don't even watch game day, bit the shit they said about Sam Ponder and her kid was not a joke. It was mean spirited and a personal attack, about her bringing her kids up on game day. Just because you laugh after saying something crude doesn't make it a joke, let alone humorous.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Morty. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer’s head. There’s also Rick’s nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they’re not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Rick & Morty truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the humour in Rick’s existential catchphrase “Wubba Lubba Dub Dub,” which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev’s Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Dan Harmon’s genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them.

Portnoy isn't very difficult to get, he's not funny either. There's no levels he's operating on. He's just a halfwit rich boy who thinks being cruel and mean spirited is funny, because every friend he's ever had in his life he paid for.

As did I back when it was famous smoke show of the days, a daily marry fuck kill and a majority of sports related posts. Shit blew up too fast and turned into more of a“frat” “bro” blog than a sports blog. I was part of the problem in that I told anyone within ear shot that I knew of the greatest website in existence. The blackout tour was the beginning of the shift to full sellout but unlike some on this blog I think portnoy is great. I wouldn’t be surprised if he dabbled here too.

Odd choice.  That show was the only reason to watch ESPN outside of live sports.

Amazing to me that the host of one of their flagship shows can call half their viewership white supremacists and receive no punishment, but these guys get cancelled because their boss, not them, said Sam Ponder's job is to look slutty (it is).

I just did some googling and found that 'slut' audio. Now I don't understand why ESPN didn't know this in the first place, still partnered with Barstool, and then immediately cancelled. Seems like that should've been a due dilligence thing on their part

I think it got greenlit because the PMT guys have a lot of ESPNers in their corner that were willing to vouch for then, while the critical voices didn't come in until later.

I agree that the PMT guys would be better off splitting off from Barstool (as others have said in the thread). PFT has been successful at ridding Big Cat of the worst indulgences of the Barstool brand. But unfortunately Big Cat seems to have a level of loyalty to Barstool that will do him more harm than good at this point in his career.

Going to be interesting to watch it all develop, to say the least.

I have to assume that at some point these Pardon My Take guys are going to look at whatever stock/interest they have in Barstool and realize it isn't worth missing out on these opportunities in the greater media market and bolt.  Barstool is garbage, and it's going to keep being garbage until the end of time, so no reason to go down with it.

I had no idea what this was about so I googled it. Then I watched some. Then I tried to forget that I tried to watch it. Why would anyone watch that?

I still think the PMT interviews with Harbaugh might be the best interviews he has given. Felt very real and comfortable. Can't say I'm a big fan of the Barstool Brand, but the PMT boys have something special going on and will find their feel elsewhere eventually.

I refuse to watch ESPN outside of the sports anyways so I wasn't ever going to watch the show but I don't understand what happened here. I thought it was brilliant but confusing that ESPN of all places was going to take on BVT.

The whole Sam Ponder twitter thing was ridiculous at best. She was trying to blame Big Cat for something Portnoy said... I mean I get that she was offended and why but she's a moron for insisting that it was Big Cats fault.

I quit watching the Crap Nilly Nonsense produced from them along time ago. Oh wait that is CNN. Sorry, I get the 2 channels confused because I go brain dead anytime I watch either for more than 30 seconds.

Snowflakes are offended by what people say. I am not offended by ESPN. I just think they are dipshits and my IQ will drop by listening to them. I don’t need those retards spewing their uneducated information on me.

It sounds like you are the snowflake here. You got offended by what I said and felt the need to respond.

These dudes aren't funny and when they come on the Russillo Show I change it cause they're garbage. Even Russillo has fallen off too riding SVPs coattails.

It was rough sledding during the Thursday segment.  Russillo gets the joke, so he makes a solid foil, but Adnan seemed so wrong to be the fourth part of that.  Will Cain would have been much more able to help that segment along (even though I enjoy the Adnan/Russillo dynamic much more than the Russillo/Cain dynamic.)

That said, they were joking about "We did one, now we have to do another one..." and now, well, they don't.

Weird. I was part of a multi-RV (90% PSU) tailgate this weekend. On Friday night, we set up a quarter-football field of tailgate space between the vehicles, which already was pretty epic. Especially with the catering and tailgate olympics we had set up between "Bear" Pong, "Stump," and several less exotic games. And *then* the Barstool RV parked right next to us. We joked that we were about to become social media-famous. But 30-minutes later they cleared out to give us even more space. I wonder (...) did ESPN nix them in that window? Long story short: no fame. But the day was incredible. We drew a heck of a crowd.
