Michigan PSU Quarterback QBR comparison

Submitted by Rdog on

McSorely's performance this year has been above average but not great with a Total QBR of 63.9 YTD.   O'Korn's average Total QBR rating is 52.4 for the season.

Overall, McSorely has been better every week than Michigan's QBs with the exception of Game 4 when Michigan played Purdue and PSU was at Iowa.

Versus the one shared opponent Indiana.  PSU was at home while Michigan was an away game       PSU had a TQBR of 54     MICH had a TQBR of 39.5

Game 1 2 3 4 5 6
Opp TQBR Opp TQBR Opp TQBR Opp TQBR Opp TQBR Opp TQBR
PSU AKR 75.4 PITT 58.1 GAST 96.9 IOWA 48.2 IND 54 NW 62.6
Michigan FLA 42.1 CIN 27.6 AF 27.5 PUR 88.8 MSU 29 IND 39.5

The guy blocks worse than almost all michigan wr lol. But he is a match up problem for most teams. I think Hudson will be on him most the time.

Also, he lefy the indy gamewith an injury and went to the locker room. I did not see him come back. Anyone know the status there.

Would love that Purdue QBR to return. Please John, find it within yourself.

I can't imagine where this team would be with a QB that could be in the 50-65 QBR range.

I'm not too moved one way or the other by that table.  While Michigan has not played the toughest schedule, Florida, IU and Purdue all have decent to good defenses.

Penn State has Akron and the hot doo-doo that is Georgia State pumping up McSorley's numbers.  But the also have played Iowa, who is not hot doo-doo.  What I'm driving at is that this is not an apples-to-apples comparison.*

*The table unfortunately cuts off last weekend's stats, which at least would show us the comparables on IU.  But even that is a single data point.

This has certainly been the week for QB comparisons.  So far I've seen the following (and it's only Tuesday).

Speight vs O'Korn (all)

Healthy Speight (pre-Iowa) vs O'Korn

Healthy Speight vs Injured Speight

O'Korn (Purdue version) vs O'Korn (all others)

O'Korn vs Speight vs Peters

O'Korn vs Peters

Peters vs coaching staff

O'Korn vs McSorely (all opponents)

O'Korn vs McSorely (common opponents)

O'Korn vs down and distance

O'Korn vs pressure

There's probably more (probably a LOT more) but those are the ones that come immediately to mind.  I'd say we're probably done now but I definitely know better than that.  More comparison's on the way boys!

McSorley has looked way more human against competent defenses (Iowa and IU) than I expected.  If Barkley is held reasonably in check (I'm thinking around 150-175 yards of total offense, give or take a reception), then it falls on McSorley to drive the offense and that's a win for the defense.

And PSU was living on arm punts last season... We knew all along that a QB can't hit 50/50 balls forever. I think they're overrated and ripe for an upset this weekend, we just need competent QB play to pull it off (which may be a problem)

Some other data (from NCAA Statistics):

Trace McSorely overall -

6 games, 130 / 194 for 1,597 yards, 4 INTs, 13 passing TDs, collegiate rating of 154.1

John O'Korn overall -

5 games, 42 / 85 for 563 yards, 4 INTs, 1 passing TD, collegiate rating of 106.8

According to their rankings for passing efficiency, that's the difference between #20 and #102 overall.

Happy Valley will become sad valley once the Wolverines decide to bathe in the valley's postgame tears.

Please... this blog is holding me up on doing something very, very, very, important. Let me go and fulfill my primal destiny.

There really is no comparison, McSorely is an All Big Ten QB. If he were on Michigan they'd be the conference champs.

We'd take Mcsorely in a heart beat. When did we have even Mcsorely level QB play? Stop with Mcsorely is not good. Arm punt or no, he gets the ball to his playmakers and that is a good college QB.

We would take a few big ten qbs in a heartbeat. He is not one of them. He is not a drop back passer and is horrible under duress. He would have a simular or worst QBR as the two Michigan qbs with how the line was not picking up any pass rush stunts to begin the year.

Hijack this thread but 2 PSU alums I know both have a bad feeling about Saturday. One predicted Michigan to win 23-14. Thinks our defense will overwhelm PSUs offense and generate enough points off TOS to offset our horrible offense.

... I agree PSU is overrated, but there is no way we win this game if O'korn plays in the same range as he's played in 3 of 4 of his meaningful minute games. Our run game isn't good enough, we'll lose field position battles, and our defense will break a couple times.

I'm going with 20-13, in a game that doesn't feel as close as the score.
